The Design Of A One-Man Terramechanism, Brent Charles Fryer

Theses and Dissertations

With the rebirth of special warfare in the last few years, the role of the individual soldier and of squad-sized units has been re-emphasized. Most guerilla-type fighting has been, is presently, and will most likely continue occurring in remote areas of the world. The terrain encountered may be tropical grasslands and canopy areas, or rugged mountains, inland waterways, swamps, mud flats and rice paddies. Other adverse terrain conditions are frequently encountered and must be crossed to accomplish the mission of the unit.

Development Of A Drainage Function For The Transient Case, And A Two-Dimensional Ground-Water Mound Study To Evaluate Aquifer Parameters, Seid Abdollah Jenab

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A drainage function, D (un), is developed to describe the rate of fall and the shape of the water table between drains for an infinite series of parallel drains. The drainage function is evaluated and presented graphically for design purposes. The solution of the drainage function is compared with the solution of Glover's transient state drainage equation. The two equations agreed very well, but the agreement was not as good for very high values of √(4αt)/ L.

The drainage function, D (un ), was solved for the point midway between drains and the solution was presented graphically …

Simulation And Analysis Of Stream-Aquifer Systems, Morton W. Bittinger

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

As defined for this study, a stream-aquifer system is a hydrologic system in which there is an intimate hydraulic interrelationship between one or more aquifers and a perennial stream. The objectives of this study are to better understand the response behavior of typical stream-aquifer systems, to look at the response behavior as influenced by water management practices, and to consider the problems and possibilities of integrated management of groundwater and surface water supplies within stream-aquifer systems.

A brief history of water development practices and policy, particularly in the Western United States, indicates that the tendency over the years has been …

Energy Transfer And Electron Conduction In The Fluid Transpiration Arc Column, Pin-Seng Tschang Feb 1967

Energy Transfer And Electron Conduction In The Fluid Transpiration Arc Column, Pin-Seng Tschang

Dissertations

The energy relaxation and electrical conductivity of an electron gas in one atmosphere argon arc discharge has been examined theoretically and observed quantitatively in an experimental arrangement. The plasma column utilized for study is the type generated in a fluid transpiration arc equipment in which the argon working fluid is injected through a porous graphite anode. The rate of forced convection is such as to insure significant electron-heavy particle nonequilibrium in the sample volume of interest. A simple model of a developing arc column with internal heat generation indicates that, with typical rates of argon injection realized in practice, the …

Carburizing Of Steel Using "Cracked" Methane, Robert Alvin Hesse Jan 1967

Carburizing Of Steel Using "Cracked" Methane, Robert Alvin Hesse

Theses

An attempt was made to carburize steel using cracked methane, industrial terminology for methane burned in air over a catalyst to give carbon monoxide and hydrogen, as the carburizing agent. Initial tests in a laboratory scale furnace using steel in chip form showed that, the feasibility of this method was excellent. These tests also indicated that a good method of control of the carburizing would be by a system that could measure the dew point of the gases introduced into the furnace. The next step was to apply the method of carburizing to small production size lots of bearing components. …

Plastic Deformation Of Thin Plates With A Spherical Indenter, Benjamin Jen-An Chang Jan 1967

Plastic Deformation Of Thin Plates With A Spherical Indenter, Benjamin Jen-An Chang

Masters Theses

"A method of determining the stress distribution in a thin plate deformed with a spherical indenter is presented in this report. The analysis is formulated in cylindrical coordinates and utilizes the basic principles of plasticity (von Mises yield criteria, Luwig stress-strain equation, Hencky Deformation theory, etc.). The problem is solved through the utility of a displacement function that, by virtue of its definition, automatically assures that the condition of volume constancy is satisfied. The boundary conditions are selected on the basis of having average, or integrated, effects corresponding to the physical constraints of the problem. Numerical integration is introduced to …

Hydrologic Characteristics Of Shallow Bedrock Aquifers In The Vicinity Of Norman Creek, Central Phelps County, Missouri, Michael A. Nawrocki Jan 1967

Hydrologic Characteristics Of Shallow Bedrock Aquifers In The Vicinity Of Norman Creek, Central Phelps County, Missouri, Michael A. Nawrocki

Masters Theses

"Groundwater is becoming increasingly important as a source of water supply in the United States. Consequently, the prediction of well yields is a vital concern. In order to predict the quantity of water which can be reduced from a given aquifer it is necessary to know the aquifer's hydrologic characteristics. Many theoretical formulae have been derived for determining the aquifer characteristics. To date, these formulae have been tested mainly on unconsolidated and clastic rock aquifers. It has never been shown that these formulae can also be consistently applied to carbonate aquifers which underlie regions of karst terrain. This paper summarizes …

A Programmed Synthesis Procedure For Asynchronous Sequential Circuits, Robert Judson Smith Jan 1967

A Programmed Synthesis Procedure For Asynchronous Sequential Circuits, Robert Judson Smith

Masters Theses

"The synthesis procedure for large asynchronous normal fundamental-mode sequential circuits is time-consuming and tedious when performed manually. This paper describes a series of computer programs which, given a machine specification in flow table form, automatically produces simplified normal form implementation design equations. The user may specify that either minimum-variable state assignments, or more rapidly generated near-minimum-variable codes be found. Next-state equations are formed using the generated state assignments and converted to simplified sums of products. Sample machines having flow tables of up to eighteen rows by four columns are synthesized"--Abstract, page ii.

Geographical Characteristics Of Early Mormon Settlements, John Haws Baum Jan 1967

Geographical Characteristics Of Early Mormon Settlements, John Haws Baum

Theses and Dissertations

Considerable literature has been written about the Mormons and their settlement of the lands within the Great Basin; yet no one has produced a systematic study which analyzes the following geographical factors: What pattern of land occupancy was actually used by these early pioneers? Which physical characteristics determined the selection of a site for the Mormon village? What type of city survey pattern was instigated as towns were established along the eastern margin of the Great Basin? What was the relationship between the forts and the settlements in their lay-out patterns? As these questions were systematically analyzed new findings were …

Matrix Computer Analysis Of Curvilinear Grid Systems, David Leon Fenton

Doctoral Dissertations

"A general equilibrium-stiffness method of matrix structural analysis was adapted and applied to the solution of the member end forces and moments of each of the members in a curvilinear structural grid system. A structural system of this nature is commonly used as the supporting framework for a "steel-framed dome", in addition to being a basic structural component in many aerospace applications. An integral part of the development of the analysis was the development of a computer program to perform the many complex operations required to obtain the solution. The engineer, by supplying the appropriate structural data and load data …

Determining The Transfer Matrices Of Tapered Multiwire Transmission Lines, Clyde A. Vandivort Jan 1967

Determining The Transfer Matrices Of Tapered Multiwire Transmission Lines, Clyde A. Vandivort

Masters Theses

"The advent of monolithic and integrated microelectronic circuits has aroused interest in passive multilayered thin film networks. The basic thin film network is shown in Figure 1. This structure consists of alternate resistive and dielectric layers sandwiched together. Such devices are referred to as distributed parameter RC networks. The reduction of volume and increased reliability offered by thin film devices has caused considerable effort to be extended in the analysis of their characteristics....

The incremental equivalent circuit given in Figure 2 stems directly from the above physical parameters and is the circuit used as a basis for the analysis that …

A New Performance Index For Sensitivity And Energy Optimization., Mohamed Zafer Dajani Jan 1967

A New Performance Index For Sensitivity And Energy Optimization., Mohamed Zafer Dajani

Masters Theses

"The principal aim of this thesis is to present a new index of performance which when minimized will simultaneously optimize the system energy and sensitivity function of a multivariable linear control system. With this performance index it is usually desirable to discriminate between the sensitivity factor and the energy term by weighting them differently. Two types of weighting factors are presented. Since it is not easy to minimize that performance index for all types of problems, further research is suggested to find methods of solution for such problems. Illustrative examples demonstrate the optimization process and the type of assumptions needed …

A Comparison Of Friction And Drum Hoisting Systems On An Energy-Input Basis, Hemendra Nath Kalia Jan 1967

A Comparison Of Friction And Drum Hoisting Systems On An Energy-Input Basis, Hemendra Nath Kalia

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this thesis is to provide a suitable basis for comparing the relative advantages of the friction and drum hoists under various conditions of operation.

Such comparisons are mainly and necessarily based upon physical characteristics of the mechanisms for lack of appropriate economic data. It is believed, however, that this inadequacy may be alleviated to some extent by substituting comparative theoretical energy requirements of' the two hoisting systems under identical duty conditions over a practical range of mining situations involving various depths and daily productions.

This has been accomplished by adapting a computer to standard mine-hoist design techniques …

Annealing Characteristics Of Neutron Irradiated Silicon Transistors, Joseph Robert Chott Jan 1967

Annealing Characteristics Of Neutron Irradiated Silicon Transistors, Joseph Robert Chott

Masters Theses

"When a transistor is subjected to neutron irradiation, a component of base current proportional to neutron fluence is induced. From the effects of annealing on the base and collector currents, the conclusion was drawn that there is an apparent difference in the annealing characteristics between the neutral and the space-charge regions of the semiconductor device. This study of the anomalous annealing indicates that the neutron-induced component of base current is a result of one, or a combination, of the following mechanisms: a quasi-tunneling recombination phenomena in the emitter-base space-charge region, or an influence of the p-n junction electric field on …

Scanning Properties Of Unsymmetrically Loaded Aperture Arrays, Gary Dean Brunner Jan 1967

Scanning Properties Of Unsymmetrically Loaded Aperture Arrays, Gary Dean Brunner

Masters Theses

"Radiation patterns resulting from an array of waveguide-fed apertures, filled with assymmetrically [sic] cut dielectric inserts, in an infinite ground plane were investigated. The results of Blumberg and Hemmen concerning single apertures were applied to a two-aperture array, with emphasis upon obtaining an array capable of scanning in the far field through changes in the permittivity of the assymmetrically [sic] cut dielectric inserts. Scanning was shown to be possible with up to a 60⁰ scan angle with a "push-pull" method of varying permittivities, in which the permittivity of one insert is raised while the other is lowered. The aperture field …
