Impact Of Solar Generation On Ieee 9-Bus System, Tasnim Ikra Rahman Aug 2023

Impact Of Solar Generation On Ieee 9-Bus System, Tasnim Ikra Rahman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There has been an increasing interest in renewable energies due to public awareness of the negative effects of fossil fuel-fired electricity generation on the environment, and policies have been enacted requiring progressive reduction of such generation. Due to some favorable characteristics of solar over other renewables, solar power has grown considerably. Integration of solar generation into the existing power grids poses significant challenges. Solar generators' limited reactive power capability can cause several problems, such as significant voltage drops or rises in the system. Therefore, voltage stability is a major concern. This thesis presents an investigation of the voltage characteristics of …

Active Blade Pitch And Hull-Based Structural Control Of Floating Offshore Wind Turbines, Eben Lenfest May 2021

Active Blade Pitch And Hull-Based Structural Control Of Floating Offshore Wind Turbines, Eben Lenfest

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Floating offshore wind turbines (FOWTs) have the potential to bring renewable energy to waters too deep for traditional offshore wind turbines while still being able to harness strong coastal winds in areas near population centers. However, these floating wind turbines come at a higher capital cost relative to fixed foundations and are more susceptible to vibrations induced by waves. Advances in control technologies offer the potential to reduce fatigue loads due to these vibrations, extending the life of the platform and thereby spreading the capital costs of the turbine over a longer period of time. One such advance is in …

Application Of Silicon Nanohair Textured P-N Junctions In A Photovoltaic Device, Michael Small Dec 2018

Application Of Silicon Nanohair Textured P-N Junctions In A Photovoltaic Device, Michael Small

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this project is to design and develop a fabrication process for a silicon photovoltaic device which incorporates a nanohair textured p-n junction. The silicon nanowires are etched into a silicon wafer, comprising an epitaxial p-layer on n-substrate, via metal-assisted chemical etching (MACE). The resulting nanowires contain p-n junctions that lie along the length of the vertical nanowires. This construct has the potential to increase the optical bandwidth of a silicon photovoltaic device by allowing a greater amount of short wavelength light to reach the junction. In addition, the MACE method of nanofabrication has the potential for decreasing …

Stochastic Modeling Of Wireless Energy Transfer With Applications In Wireless Displacement Sensing Of Structures, Shaun G. Veilleux May 2018

Stochastic Modeling Of Wireless Energy Transfer With Applications In Wireless Displacement Sensing Of Structures, Shaun G. Veilleux

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Wireless communications are being utilized in nearly every field of work and impact virtually everyone's daily life. With the increased use of wireless sensors, the difficulty of powering them becomes more apparent. One emerging technology is the use of wireless energy transfer which utilizes either a designated transmitter or harvests otherwise wasted energy. Since the amount of transferable wireless energy is limited modeling and simulating a system's probability of operation is desired in order to maximize the run time of the sensor. These simulations allow for the investigation into the impact of a smart scheduling algorithm that can determine the …

Detailed Power Measurement With Arm Embedded Boards, Yanxiang Mao Apr 2018

Detailed Power Measurement With Arm Embedded Boards, Yanxiang Mao

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Power and energy are becoming important considerations in today's electronic equipment. The amount of power required to run a supercomputer for an hour could supply an ordinary household for many months. The need for low-power computing also extends to smaller devices, such as mobile phones, laptops and embedded devices.

In order to optimize power usage of electronic equipment, we need to collect information on the power consumption of these devices. Unfortunately it is not easy to do this on modern computing systems. Existing measuring equipment is often expensive, inaccurate, and difficult to operate. The main goal of this project is …

Identification Of Critical Locations And Reduced Model State Estimation For Power System Analysis, Amamihe Onwuachumba Aug 2016

Identification Of Critical Locations And Reduced Model State Estimation For Power System Analysis, Amamihe Onwuachumba

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In order to reduce the carbon footprint and the cost of electric energy, the owners of electric power utilities today are faced with the task of reducing the use of expensive and carbon intensive fossil fuels and significantly increasing the amount of energy from renewable sources in their grids while meeting an increase in electricity demand. To deal with increase in demand, electric utilities operate very close to their maximum capacities and this sometimes results in violating security limits. Therefore, the integration of intermittent renewable energy into the utility grids poses serious concerns that must be addressed to ensure grid …

Impact Of Wind Generation On Dynamic Voltage Characteristics Of Power Systems, Luis Badesa Apr 2016

Impact Of Wind Generation On Dynamic Voltage Characteristics Of Power Systems, Luis Badesa

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In recent times there has been an increasing interest in renewable energies due to public awareness of the negative effects on the environment of conventional electricity generation resources like coal and oil, and several policies have been enacted requiring progressive reduction of fossil-fuel-based generation. Due to some favorable characteristics of wind over other renewables, wind power has grown considerably in the last two decades.

Integration of wind generation into the existing power grids poses significant challenges. The limited reactive power capability that wind turbines have can cause several problems, such as important voltage drops or rises in the system. Therefore, …
