The Characterization And Nanomechanical Properties Of Microstructurally Complex Systems, Kerry Ann Baker
Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering
Since the dawn of civilization, the use of metals has played an integral role in the evolution of human society. Over the years, and with the introduction of new engineering and science, we have learned how to combine metals to create new metallic systems. We have expanded our understanding of dealloying and chemical reactions, and, in doing so, we created nanoporous metals. Our use of metals has evolved from basic alloys such as bronze and steel to more complex alloys such as multi-principal element alloys. Nanoporous gold is an advanced metallic system that can be created through the dealloying process. …
Fabrication Of Smooth Sac305 Thin Films Via Magnetron Sputtering And Evaluations Of Microstructure, Creep, And Electrical Resistivity, Manish Ojha
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
SAC305 (96.5%Sn-3%Ag-0.5%Cu) is the leading alternative to the traditional Sn-Pb solder eutectic alloy owing to its low melting temperature, better compatibility with other components, and excellent mechanical/structural properties. In the realm of modern electronics, where devices are increasingly miniaturized, the design and characterization of thin solder joints become paramount. The orientation and size of the grains within the solder can influence its ability to withstand mechanical stresses. However, research on SAC thin films remains sparse, and these films present unique challenges and characteristics compared to their bulk counterparts, influenced by factors like interfaces, stresses, thickness, microstructure, and the nature of …

Interfacial Thermomechanical Behavior Of Hybrid Carbon Fibers, Sriraj Srihari
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
The carbon fiber/epoxy interface is of great importance in composite design due to its load transfer mechanisms from the weak epoxy to the stronger fiber. Improving the strength of the interface reduces the risk of failure at the interface and improves the load transfer to the fiber. In this study, two types of nano-species ZnO nanowires and nickel-based metal organic frameworks were grown on carbon fibers to improve the interfaces. The interfacial mechanics of the enhanced fibers are evaluated using nanoindentation studies. Composite samples with Aeropoxy matrix and vertically aligned fibers are fabricated for this purpose. A Bruker TI-980 TriboIndenter …

Effect Of Ion Irradiation On The Rate Dependence Of Plastic Deformation Of Extruded Zr-2.5%Nb, Konrad P. Mazurkiewicz
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the properties of Zr-2.5%Nb pressure tube material in the transverse direction. Through testing at room temperature, material properties such as the strain hardening, strain rate sensitivity and apparent activation volume were investigated. The effects of Zr+ ion-implantation occurring at 300°C, simulating irradiation-induced damage, and the strain rate of loading on these properties were also investigated.
Two methods of testing were performed: in-situ micro-pillar compressions and nanoindentation testing. Ion-implantation was observed to increase material strength and hardness. However, certain implanted micro-pillars displayed early localized failure that reduced strength. This finding warrants further …

An Electrochemical-Mechanical Investigation Of Next Generation Lithium Metal Electrode And Solid Electrolyte, Andrew Meyer
Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering
Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are a staple in today’s society. From our cellphones, laptops, power tools, the ever-growing electric vehicle, and many more application, LIBs are more important to us than most realize. They provide the best combination of both high-energy and high-power density compared to other battery types such as Ni-Cd, Ni-MH, or the lead acid batteries used in our cars. Plus, LIBs are much safer. However, as new technologies grow and are developed, the demand for higher energy and power density, better safety, lower costs, and longer life increases. One way to achieve the ever-increasing demands is to replace …

Fabrication Of Nanoporous Materials For Applications Under Extreme Environments, Maria Kosmidou
Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering
The study of nanoporous materials has become a key aspect of nanotechnology due to their high surface-area-to-volume ratio, arising from the small size ligaments and pores that form the structure. Sensing, catalysis, micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS), medical applications, and materials for radiation environments are some of the applications for which nanoporous materials are considered great candidates. This work, performed at the Ion Beam Laboratory (IBL) at Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), examines the effect of heavy and light ion irradiation exposure on nanoporous Au. Radiation damage accumulation is observed with real-time recording of the creation, migration, and removal of the radiation-induced defects …
Mechanical And Frictional Behavior Of Textured And Non-Textured Surfaces, Raghuram R. Santhapuram
Mechanical And Frictional Behavior Of Textured And Non-Textured Surfaces, Raghuram R. Santhapuram
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Tribology is the study of surfaces where two objects are sliding against another. Significant energy is lost due to friction between the sliding surfaces. Therefore, developing or designing surfaces to minimize friction is critical for the durability and reliability of the mechanical components. Several researchers have identified that surface texturing at the nanoscale (nanotexture) would reduce the friction between the contacting surfaces. The nanotextured surfaces have several applications in microelectromechanical systems and nanoelectromechanical systems. This dissertation employs molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the frictional and mechanical response of nanotextured aluminum (Al) and Al/amorphous silicon (a-Si) composite surfaces.
This study determines …
Microstructural Characterization Of Shear Transformation Zones And Modeling Indentation Size Effect In Amorphous Polymers, Leila Malekmotiei
Microstructural Characterization Of Shear Transformation Zones And Modeling Indentation Size Effect In Amorphous Polymers, Leila Malekmotiei
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The first aim of this work is developing a procedure for experimental and analytical characterization of nano-scale microstructures which mediate large scale deformation in amorphous polymers. Glassy polymers are extensively used as high impact resistant, low density, and clear materials in industries. Nevertheless, their response under severe loading conditions is yet to be appropriately unraveled. Due to the lack of long-range order in the microstructures of glassy solids, their plastic deformation is different from that in crystalline solids. Shear Transformation Zones (STZs) are believed to be the main plasticity carriers in amorphous solids and defined as the localized atomic or …
The Physical Behavior And Characterization Of Nanoporous Silicon And Dispenser Cathode Surfaces, Tyler Lucius Corey Maxwell
The Physical Behavior And Characterization Of Nanoporous Silicon And Dispenser Cathode Surfaces, Tyler Lucius Corey Maxwell
Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering
Nanostructured materials have received a surge of interest in recent years since it has become apparent that reducing the size of a material often leads to heightened mechanical behavior. From a fundamental standpoint, this stems from the confinement of dislocations. Applications in microelectromechanical devices, lithium ion batteries, gas sensing and catalysis are realized by combining the improvements in mechanical behavior from material size reduction with the heightened chemical activity offered by materials with a high surface-area-to-volume ratio. In this study, films of nanoporous Si-Mg were produced through magnetron sputtering, followed by dealloying using an environmentally benign process with distilled water. …
Effects Of Temperature, Orientation, Load Level And Indenter Shape On The Indentation Response Of Niti-Based Shape Memory Alloys, Peizhen Li
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical Engineering
Owing the capability of recovering large deformations through reversible phase transformation, shape memory alloys (SMAs) are well-known for their unique behaviors such as shape memory effect (SME) and superelasticity (SE), which can also be characterized by instrumented indentation techniques. Nickel titanium (NiTi) SMAs have been extensively used for nano/micro-indentation studies and widely applied to biomedical and other elaborate medical devices.
In this study, indentation responses of NiTi, NiTiHf, NiTiHfPd and NiTiHfCu alloys were investigated using spherical and Berkovich indenters at room temperature. Spherical and Berkovich indentation hardness, modulus, and work/depth recoverable ratio of these NiTi-based alloys were revealed as a …
Temperature Dependent Mechanical Behavior Of Solid Acids, Ryan Scott Ginder
Temperature Dependent Mechanical Behavior Of Solid Acids, Ryan Scott Ginder
Doctoral Dissertations
Existing literature data on the creep behavior of superprotonic solid acids, which is important for their use in fuel cell applications, is scant and unreliable. Steady state creep behavior for the model material system cesium hydrogen sulfate (CHS) is probed using nanoindentation and corroborated using uniaxial compression testing. To facilitate nanoindentation creep result interpretation, a radial flow model of power law indentation creep is developed. This model is compared with the related model from Bower, et. al. for several pre-existing literature datasets showing that the nonlinear, steady state creep law underpinning both appears valid for power law indentation creep.

Linking Nanoscale Mechanical Behavior To Bulk Physical Properties And Phenomena Of Energetic Materials, Matthew R. Taw
Open Access Theses
The hardness and reduced modulus of aspirin, RDX, HMX, TATB, FOX-7, ADAAF, and TNT/CL-20 were experimentally measured with nanoindentation. These values are reported for the first time using as-received micron sized crystals of energetic materials with no additional mechanical processing. The results for TATB, ADAAF, and TNT/CL-20 are the first of their kind, while comparisons to previous nanoindentation studies on large, carefully grown single crystals of the other energetic materials show that mechanical properties of the larger crystals are comparable to crystals in the condition they are practically used. Measurements on aspirin demonstrate the variation that can occur between nanoindentation …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Reducing energy consumption is a high priority in the United States and throughout the world. Energy used to heat and cool occupied constructed facilities is of particular concern, and one of the most effective strategies is insulating the building envelope. Historically, builders used whatever material was available to fill the void between interior and exterior walls, including wool fibers, paper, and even corn cobs. Today, homes are built using foam insulation that harden when applied, blown-in loose insulation, fiberglass mats or rigid foam boards usually composed of polystyrene. Rigid foam boards are used in a variety of applications despite the …

Al/Ti Nanostructured Multilayers: From Mechanical, Tribological, To Corrosion Properties, Sina Izadi
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Nanostructured metallic multilayers (NMMs) are well-known for their high strength in smaller bilayer thicknesses. Six Al/Ti (NMM) with different individual layer thickness were tested for their mechanical hardness using a nanoindentation tool. Individual layer thicknesses were chosen carefully to cover the whole confined layer slip (CLS) model. Nano-hardness had a reverse relation with the square root of individual layer thickness and reached a steady state at ~ 5 nm bilayer thickness. Decreasing the layer bilayer thickness from ~ 104 nm to ~ 5 nm, improved the mechanical hardness up to ~ 101%. Residual stresses were measured using grazing incident X-ray …

Incipient Plasticity Of Metals And Alloys Using Nano-Indentation Technique, Dong Wu
Doctoral Dissertations
The incipient plasticity indicates the nucleation or activation of defects in materials and enables us to study the intrinsic mechanical properties of materials. In this dissertation, instrumented indentation technique was employed to study the incipient plasticity of metals (bcc-Cr, fcc-Ni, fcc-Au) and a fcc-structured high entropy alloy (HEA) NiFeCoMnCr. The critical shear stresses for pop-in in these materials were all within the range of theoretical strength of materials, indicating the nucleation of dislocations in perfect crystals.
In Chapter 3 and 4, indentation tests were conducted at elevated temperatures to study the pop-in behavior in bcc-Cr and fcc-Au. The pop-in load …
Adhesion Of Germanium Electrode On Nickel Substrate For Lithium Ion Battery Applications, Aadithya Jeyaranjan
Adhesion Of Germanium Electrode On Nickel Substrate For Lithium Ion Battery Applications, Aadithya Jeyaranjan
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Lithium ion batteries (LIBs) have gained increasing popularity due to their high potential, low self-discharge, zero priming and minimal memory effect. However, the emergence of electrical vehicles and hybrid electrical vehicles in the automobile industry, where LIBs are predominantly in use, instilled a need to improve LIB batteries by experimenting with new materials. Graphite, the commonly used anode material for LIBs suffers from low theoretical capacity (372 mA h g-1) and torpid rate performance. Germanium (Ge) seems to be a promising substitute of carbon due to its high theoretical capacity, high Li+ diffusivity and electrical conductivity. However, Ge undergoes large …

Deformation Of A Face-Centered Cubic Fecocrmnni High Entropy Alloy, Chao Zhu
Doctoral Dissertations
A polycrystalline, face-centered cubic high entropy alloy (HEA) FeCoCrMnNi was investigated by nanoindentation and stress relaxation. A literature review on HEAs was presented in Chapter 1 and a description of methodology was followed in Chapter 2.
In Chapter 3, the nature of incipient plasticity was characterized with instrumented indentations over various loading rates and temperatures. The maximum shear stress for initiating the incipient plasticity attained the theoretical strength and was relatively insensitive to grain orientation. However, it strongly depended upon the temperature, indicating a thermally activated nucleation process. The estimated activation energy and volume signify that the nucleation is mediated …

New Topics On Nanoindentation Of Polymers And Composite Materials, Ricardo Martinez-Hernandez
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
In this study, nanoindentation was used to determine Young's modulus of homogeneous plastic materials as well as inhomogeneous epoxy woven fabric composites using various indenters. In the first part, homogeneous PMMA and polycarbonate were characterized using conical and spherical indenters. The conventional approach of the inverse analysis was modified in order to account for effects obtained during spherical nanoindentation. The experimental results were verified using FEA analysis in ABAQUS. It was found that viscous effects were present in conical nanoindentations which led to an overestimation of contact stiffness. The second part, the response of carbon and glass fiber woven fabric …

Shear-Band Formation And Thermal Activation In Metallic Glasses, Lu Wang
Shear-Band Formation And Thermal Activation In Metallic Glasses, Lu Wang
Doctoral Dissertations
Metallic glasses (MGs) usually have high strength, high hardness and high elastic strain limit. However, the deformation mode and mechanism in metallic glasses are radically different from those in conventional crystalline materials with a long-range ordered structure. For crystalline materials, the intrinsic relationship between their mechanical properties and crystal structures has been well described by dislocation theory. In contrast, for amorphous materials, theories on the structures and controlling factors of localized shear-band formation are far from being complete.
In this thesis, shear-banding behavior of MGs under nanoindentation was first reviewed. The hardness of MGs was found to be independent on …

Nanocrystalline materials with grain size less than 100 nm have been receiving much attention because of their unparallel properties compared with their microcrystalline counterparts. Because of its high hardness, nanocrystalline nickel has been used for MEMS. Long term thermomechnical properties and deformation mechanism at both ambient and elevated temperatures need to be evaluated which is vital for reliability of its applications as structural material.
In this thesis, nanoindentation creep of nanocrystalline nickel with an as-deposited grain size of 14 nm was characterized at elevated temperatures. The nanoindentation creep rate was observed to scale with temperature and applied load (or stress), …
Methods For Characterizing Mechanical Properties Of Wood Cell Walls Via Nanoindentation, Yujie Meng
Methods For Characterizing Mechanical Properties Of Wood Cell Walls Via Nanoindentation, Yujie Meng
Masters Theses
Nanoindentation is a method of contacting a material whose mechanical properties are unknown with another material whose properties are known. Nanoindentation has the advantage of being able to probe a material’s microstructure while being sensitive enough to detect variations in mechanical properties. However, nanoindentation has some limitations as a testing technique due to the specific formation and structure of some biomaterials. The main objective of this research is to identify any factors that influence the nanoindentation measurement of wood cell walls (a typical biomaterial).
The function of the embedding media in describing the properties of wood cells is poorly understood. …
