Structural Health Monitoring Of Pipelines In Radioactive Environments Through Acoustic Sensing And Machine Learning, Michael Thompson
Structural Health Monitoring Of Pipelines In Radioactive Environments Through Acoustic Sensing And Machine Learning, Michael Thompson
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Structural health monitoring (SHM) comprises multiple methodologies for the detection and characterization of stress, damage, and aberrations in engineering structures and equipment. Although, standard commercial engineering operations may freely adopt new technology into everyday operations, the nuclear industry is slowed down by tight governmental regulations and extremely harsh environments. This work aims to investigate and evaluate different sensor systems for real-time structural health monitoring of piping systems and develop a novel machine learning model to detect anomalies from the sensor data. The novelty of the current work lies in the development of an LSTM-autoencoder neural network to automate anomaly detection …

Mechanical Properties Of Permanent Foaming Fixatives For Deactivation & Decommissioning Activities, Tristan Maximilian Simoes-Ponce
Mechanical Properties Of Permanent Foaming Fixatives For Deactivation & Decommissioning Activities, Tristan Maximilian Simoes-Ponce
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Department of Energy is investigating fixative technologies that encapsulate and/or immobilize residual contamination in voids during deactivation and decommissioning (D&D). These technologies must have adequate mechanical and adhesion properties to withstand seismic activity that may occur. One solution is the implementation of polyurethane foams used as permanent foaming fixatives (PFF), specifically intumescent foams that contain expandable graphite, making them fire resistant when exposed to extreme heat conditions.
Tensile, compression, seismic, and tensile adhesion testing was done on six commercial-off-the-self polyurethane foams to determine if the expandable graphite and other filler intumescent technologies improve its mechanical limits. It was found …

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) seriously threaten the health of human beings, and they have caused widespread concern in recent years. At present, the diagnosis of CVD is mainly conducted by computed tomography (CT), echocardiography and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technologies. NMR imaging technology is widely used in medical applications owing to its characteristics of high resolution and very low radiation. However, manual NMR image segmentation is time-consuming and error-prone, which has led to the research on automatic NMR image segmentation technologies. Researchers tend to explore the ventricular NRM image segmentation to improve the accuracy of CVD diagnosis. In this study, based …
The Effect Of Flinak Molten Salt Corrosion On The Hardness Of Hastelloy N, David Kok
The Effect Of Flinak Molten Salt Corrosion On The Hardness Of Hastelloy N, David Kok
Honors Program Projects
The desire to reduce pollution caused by electricity production has led to a call for the replacement of conventional fossil fuel power plants. In order to fulfill this goal, a large amount of new nuclear reactors is required, and this provides the opportunity to put new and innovative reactor designs into production. The Molten Salt Reactor (MSR) is one of the most promising concepts, but a suitable combination of molten salt and container material needs to be found to reduce the potential for corrosion before the concept can be put into production. FLiNaK molten salt and the nickel-based alloy Hastelloy …

A High Availability Application Service Platform For Nuclear Power Enterprises, Zhe Sun, He Jin, Jianming Yong, Salim Al Isma'ili, Changying Li, Jun Shen
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
This paper presents a High Availability Application Service Platform (HAASP) and analyses its high availability. The architecture of this platform contains application server platform and high availability architecture. Application server platform consists of three major components, application release platform, which is implemented with WebLogic and WebSphere cluster, application and database platforms, which are built with Oracle RAC, and IBM Domino cluster. High availability architecture is constructed by virtual machines, distributed switches and storage pools. It employs virtualization technology to integrate physical servers and storages, where physical servers are responsible for the creation of virtual server cluster, distributed switches, storage pool …

Uct-Kirchberg Algebras Have Nuclear Dimension One, Efren Ruiz, Aidan Sims, Adam P. Sorensen
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
We prove that every Kirchberg algebra in the UCT class has nuclear dimension 1. We first show that Kirchberg 2-graph algebras with trivial K0 and finite K1 have nuclear dimension 1 by adapting a technique developed by Winter and Zacharias for Cuntz algebras. We then prove that every Kirchberg algebra in the UCT class is a direct limit of 2-graph algebras to obtain our main theorem.

The Nuclear Dimension Of Graph C*-Algebras, Efren Ruiz, Aidan Sims, Mark Tomforde
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
Consider a graph C⁎C⁎-algebra C⁎(E)C⁎(E) with a purely infinite ideal I (possibly all of C⁎(E)C⁎(E)) such that I has only finitely many ideals and C⁎(E)/IC⁎(E)/I is approximately finite dimensional. We prove that the nuclear dimension of C⁎(E)C⁎(E) is 1. If I has infinitely many ideals, then the nuclear dimension of C⁎(E)C⁎(E) is either 1 or 2.
A Game-Theoretic Analysis Of The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, Peter Revesz
A Game-Theoretic Analysis Of The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, Peter Revesz
CSE Conference and Workshop Papers
Although nuclear non-proliferation is an almost universal human desire, in practice, the negotiated treaties appear unable to prevent the steady growth of the number of states that have nuclear weapons. We propose a computational model for understanding the complex issues behind nuclear arms negotiations, the motivations of various states to enter a nuclear weapons program and the ways to diffuse crisis situations.

Chandra Observations Of Nuclear Outflows In The Elliptical Galaxy Ngc 4552 In The Virgo Cluster, M Machacek, Paul E. J Nulsen, C Jones, W R. Forman
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
We use a 54.4 ks Chandra observation to study nuclear outflow activity in NGC 4552 (M89), an elliptical galaxy in the Virgo Cluster. Chandra images in the 0.5–2 keV band show two ringlike features ∼1.7 kpc in diameter in the core of NGC 4552, as reported previously by Filho et al. We use spherically symmetric point explosion shock models to argue that the shape of the surface brightness profile across the rims of the rings and the temperature of hot gas in the rings are consistent with a Mach 1.7 shock carrying mean mechanical power Lshock ∼ 3 × 1041 …
Long-Term Effects Of Neutron Absorber And Fuel Matrix Corrosion On Criticality, William Culbreth, P. Zielinski
Long-Term Effects Of Neutron Absorber And Fuel Matrix Corrosion On Criticality, William Culbreth, P. Zielinski
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research
Proposed waste package designs will require the addition of neutron absorbing material to prevent the possibility of a sustained chain reaction occurring in the fuel in the event of water intrusion. Due to the low corrosion rates of the fuel matrix and the Zircaloy cladding, there is a possibility that the neutron absorbing material will corrode and leak from the waste container long before the subsequent release of fuel matrix material. An analysis of the release of fuel matrix and neutron absorber material based on a probabilistic model was conducted and the results were used to prepare input to KENO-V, …
