Constrained Biogeography-Based Optimization For Invariant Set Computation,, Arpit Shah, Daniel Simon, Hanz Richter

Hanz Richter

We discuss the application of biogeography-based optimization (BBO) to invariant set approximation. BBO is a recently developed evolutionary algorithm (EA) that is motivated by biogeography, which is the study and science of the geographical migration of biological species. Invariant sets are sets in the state space of a dynamic system such that if the state begins in the set, then it remains in the set for all time. Invariant sets have applications in many constrained control problems, and their computation amounts to a constrained optimization problem. We therefore frame the invariant set computation problem as a constrained optimization problem, and …

Corn-Soybean And Alternative Cropping Systems Effects On No 3 -N Leaching Losses In Subsurface Drainage Water, Rameshwar S. Kanwar, Richard M. Cruse, Mohammadreza Ghaffarzadeh, Allah Bakhsh, Douglas Karlen, Theodore B. Bailey Dec 2015

Corn-Soybean And Alternative Cropping Systems Effects On No 3 -N Leaching Losses In Subsurface Drainage Water, Rameshwar S. Kanwar, Richard M. Cruse, Mohammadreza Ghaffarzadeh, Allah Bakhsh, Douglas Karlen, Theodore B. Bailey

Alternative cropping systems can improve resource use efficiency, increase corn grain yield, and help in reducing negative impacts on the environment. A 6-yr (1993 to 1998) field study was conducted at the Iowa State University’s Northeastern Research Center near Nashua, Iowa, to evaluate the effects of non-traditional cropping systems [strip inter cropping (STR)-corn (Zea mays L.)/soybean (Glycine max L.)/oats (Avina sativa L.)]; alfalfa rotation (ROT)-3-yr (1993 to 1995) alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) followed by corn in 1996, soybean in 1997, and oats in 1998), and traditional cropping system (corn after soybean (CS) and soybean after corn (SC) on the flow …

An appropriate combination of tillage and nitrogen management practices will be necessary to develop sustainable farming practices. A six–year (1993–1998) field study was conducted on subsurface–drained Clyde–Kenyon–Floyd soils to quantify the impact of two tillage systems (chisel plow vs. no tillage) and two N fertilizer management practices (preplant single application vs. late–spring soil test based application) on nitrate–nitrogen (NO3–N) leaching loss with subsurface drain discharge from corn (Zea mays L.) soybean (Glycine max L.) rotation plots. Preplant injected urea ammonium nitrate solution (UAN) fertilizer was applied at the rate of 110 kg ha–1 to chisel plow and no–till corn plots, …

Free-Edge Effect On The Effective Stiffness Of Single-Layer Triaxially Braided Composite, Chao Zhang, Wieslaw Binienda, Robert Goldberg Sep 2015

Free-Edge Effect On The Effective Stiffness Of Single-Layer Triaxially Braided Composite, Chao Zhang, Wieslaw Binienda, Robert Goldberg

Wieslaw K. Binienda

Free-edge effect is known to play an important role in the failure of triaxially braided composites, especially under transverse tension loading conditions. However, there is little understanding available regarding the free-edge effect on the elastic property of the material. The emphasis of the present study is to examine the impact of the free-edge effect on the effective elastic response of a single-layer triaxially braided composite. Transverse tension straight-sided coupon specimens with various widths are tested and analyzed. The experimental results demonstrate an obvious increase in the tangent modulus and failure strength as the specimen width increases. The surface out-of-plane displacement …

Prediction Of Unconfined Compressive Strength Of Pulverized Fuel Ash-Cement-Sand Mixture Apr 2015

Prediction Of Unconfined Compressive Strength Of Pulverized Fuel Ash-Cement-Sand Mixture

Faculty of Engineering University of Malaya

Recently, ground improvement has become much more feasible. Chemical stabilization is a quick and affordable approach to enhancing soil characteristics. An important avenue of research is discovering alternative materials for use in soil enhancement. Pulverized fuel ash (PFA), which is a waste byproduct of coal power plants, has been shown to reduce the environmental risks and costs involved in construction. In this study, a series of unconfined compressive tests were performed for various mixtures of cement, PFA, and sand; the tests considered both the curing period and the optimum moisture content (OMC). In addition, multiple variable linear regression was used …

Evaluation Of Stop Bar Video Detection Accuracy At Signalized Intersections, Avery Rhodes, Darcy M. Bullock, James R. Sturdevant, Zachary Thomas Clark Mar 2012

Evaluation Of Stop Bar Video Detection Accuracy At Signalized Intersections, Avery Rhodes, Darcy M. Bullock, James R. Sturdevant, Zachary Thomas Clark

Many agencies nationwide have adopted video vehicle detection technology as an alternative to inductive loops. While many product evaluations have been performed, the majority of these evaluations have concentrated on freeway applications where speed and volume were the primary evaluation criteria. At an actuated intersection, the metrics of speed and volume do not necessarily represent how well a device will operate as a presence detector. Video detection was evaluated at two signalized intersections in West Lafayette, Indiana and Noblesville, Indiana. A camera on each approach was located at the vendor recommended position, at a height of 40 feet and offset …

Impact Of Camera And Lighting Position On Video Detection Precision, Avery Rhodes, Kristofer Jennings, Darcy Bullock Mar 2012

Impact Of Camera And Lighting Position On Video Detection Precision, Avery Rhodes, Kristofer Jennings, Darcy Bullock

Darcy M Bullock

On well-illuminated approaches, vehicle headlight reflections on the pavement were observed to cause video detection units to activate early. This early activation results in a dramatic increase in the length of the effective vehicle detection zone. This observed variation in the effective length of the vehicle detection zone that varies by ambient lighting condition and camera placement presents a very serious impediment for traffic engineers to design vehicle extension intervals that operate correctly during day, night and transition periods. Furthermore, the stochastic variation in the length of the vehicle detection zone length has the potential to create driver expectancy issues. …

Improving The Polymer Injection Manufacturing Process By Using Quality Engineering Methodology, Dotan I. Shvorin Oct 2011

Improving The Polymer Injection Manufacturing Process By Using Quality Engineering Methodology, Dotan I. Shvorin

Dr. Dotan Shvorin

Using quality engineering tools and methodologies are proven to be the back bone of a successful organization. Yet, they present challenges to engineers because in order to use them correctly the engineer needs to rely on his own analysis. From his findings, the engineer would be able to determine the location and the purpose for each unique quality tool or methodology. This paper presents a quality engineered methodology usage in the polymer injection manufacturing process in order to minimize the manufacturing process defects.
