Spectroscopic Investigation Into Oxidative Degradation Of Silica-Supported Amine Sorbents For Co2 Capture, Chakravartula Srikanth, Steven Chuang Jul 2014

Spectroscopic Investigation Into Oxidative Degradation Of Silica-Supported Amine Sorbents For Co2 Capture, Chakravartula Srikanth, Steven Chuang

Steven S.C. Chuang

Oxidative degradation characteristics of silica-supported amine sorbents with varying amounts of tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA) and polyethylene glycol (PEG; P200 or P600 represents PEG with molecular weights of 200 or 600) have been studied by IR and NMR spectroscopy. Thermal treatment of the sorbents and liquid TEPA at 100 °C for 12 h changed their color from white to yellow. The CO2 capture capacity of the TEPA/SiO2 sorbents (i.e., SiO2-supported TEPA with a TEPA/SiO2 ratio of 25:75) decreased by more than 60 %. IR and NMR spectroscopy studies showed that the yellow color of the degraded sorbents resulted from the formation of …

A Light-Assisted, Polymeric Water Oxidation Catalyst That Selectively Oxidizes Seawater With A Low Onset Potential, Jun Chen, Pawel W. Wagner, Lei Tong, Danijel Boskovic, Weimin Zhang, David L. Officer, Gordon G. Wallace, Gerhard F. Swiegers

Gordon Wallace

Vapour phase polymerisation (vpp) of PEDOT to incorporate high levels of a sulphonated manganese porphyrin yields a vivid green conducting polymer that, under illumination, catalyzes selective oxidation of water from seawater from ca. 0.40 V (vs. NHE; Pt counter electrode) without observable chlorine formation. This onset potential is comparable to that of certain metal oxide semiconductors that achieve higher photocurrents but are not capable of selectively oxidising the water in seawater.

Research Of Surface-Oxidation Epitaxy Of Nio Films On Cube Textured Ni Tapes, Dongqi Shi, Mihail Ionescu, Jeff Mckinnon, Wu Ming Chen, S. X. Dou

Shi Xue Dou

Thin films of NiO were fabricated in air by surface-oxidation epitaxy (SOE) on biaxially-textured Ni substrate, for use as buffer layers for YBCO coated conductors. The surface-oxidation conditions such as the temperature and the reaction time, as well as the cooling rate, playa determining role in the process of epitaxial growth of the NiO layer. A continuous, biaxially-aligned textured NiO layer, was obtained for a 10 min oxidation in air at 1120°C,and acooling rate of 150 Klh. The roughness of the NiO layer is mostly controlled by a coarsening of some NiO grains .

Stress Enhanced Tio2 Nanowire Growth On Ti-6al-4v Particles By Thermal Oxidation

A.S. Md Abdul Haseeb

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanowires were grown on Ti - 6wt% Al - 4wt% V (Ti64) particles by thermal oxidation. To investigate the effect of stress on nanowire growth, the particles were milled in a planetary ball mill prior to the thermal oxidation. Thermal oxidation of the Ti64 particles was carried out in a horizontal tube furnace in a controlled oxygen atmosphere in the temperature range of 700-900 °C. The oxygen concentration was varied from 20 ppm to 80 ppm in Ar atmosphere. Nanostructures were characterized by high resolution field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. TiO2 …

Electrochemical Filtering Of Co From Fuel-Cell Reformate, Balasubramanian Lakshmanan, Wayne Huang, John W. Weidner Feb 2012

Electrochemical Filtering Of Co From Fuel-Cell Reformate, Balasubramanian Lakshmanan, Wayne Huang, John W. Weidner

John W Weidner

A proton exchange membrane fuel cell was used as a flow reactor for continuous preferential oxidation of CO over H2 from 1.0% CO in H2 under pulse-potential control. By varying the pulse profile ~e.g., on-time, off-time, pulse potential! the CO and H2 oxidation currents were varied independently. The improvement in faradaic selectivity between CO and H2 oxidation results from the promotion of CO adsorption during the off ~i.e., open-circuit! portion of the pulse. Therefore, during the on portion CO oxidation was preferred while the surface was covered with CO.

Development Of A Novel Co Tolerant Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell Anode, Andrew T. Haug, Ralph E. White, John W. Weidner, Wayne Huang Feb 2012

Development Of A Novel Co Tolerant Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell Anode, Andrew T. Haug, Ralph E. White, John W. Weidner, Wayne Huang

John W Weidner

Typically Pt is alloyed with metals such as Ru, Sn, or Mo to provide a more CO-tolerant, high-performance proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) anode. In this work, a layer of carbon-supported Ru is placed between the Pt catalyst and the anode flow field to form a filter. When oxygen is added to the fuel stream, it was predicted that the slow H2 kinetics of Ru in this filter would become an advantage compared to Pt and Pt:Ru alloy anodes, allowing a greater percentage of O2 to oxidize adsorbed CO to CO2. With an anode feed …

Effect Of Temperature On The Corrosion Behavior Of Mild Steel Upon Exposure To Palm Biodiesel Apr 2011

Effect Of Temperature On The Corrosion Behavior Of Mild Steel Upon Exposure To Palm Biodiesel

A.S. Md Abdul Haseeb

Recently biodiesel, as an alternative fuel is getting more significance to replace diesel fuel completely or partially. However, corrosion of automotive materials in biodiesel is a major concern as this can reduce engine life. This study aims to investigate the corrosion behavior of mild steel at three different temperatures such as room temperature, 50 and 80 °C. Static immersion tests in B0 (diesel), B50 (50% biodiesel in diesel), B100 (biodiesel) were carried out for 1200 h. At the end of the tests, corrosion characteristic was investigated by weight loss measurements and changes of the exposed metal surface. Fuels were analyzed …

The tibial insert was investigated by using a stereoscope, scanning electron microscope (SEM), infinite focus microscope (IFM) and energy disperse spectroscopy (EDS) to characterize the morphology and composition of the bearing surface. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Fourier transform spectroscopy (FTIR) were employed to characterize the degradation and crystallinity of the component. Gel-permeation chromatography (GPC) was used to measure the polyethylene tibial insert molecular weight. Results …

Mechanism And Kinetics Of Oxidation Of 2,4,6-Trichlorophenol By Fenton's Reagent, Somnath Basu, Irvine Wei Nov 2010

Mechanism And Kinetics Of Oxidation Of 2,4,6-Trichlorophenol By Fenton's Reagent, Somnath Basu, Irvine Wei

Irvine W. Wei

Fenton's reagent is an effective oxidant for pretreatment and toxicity reduction in wastewater contaminated with 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (TCP). The reaction, and its dependence on various parameters (e.g., molar ratios of the reacting chemicals, pH, temperature, etc.) have been reported elsewhere. In this paper a mechanistic interpretation of the reaction pathway, with identity of the intermediate reaction products, has been presented. An empirical expression for the rate of reaction has also been proposed in terms of the disappearance of TCP in water, as a function of the concentrations of the TCP itself and of the oxidant, hydrogen peroxide.

New Generation Of Catalytic Technologies For Environmental Protection On The Base Of Fiber-Glass Catalysts, Bair S. Balzhinimaev, Andrey N. Zagoruiko

Andrey N Zagoruiko

Novel glass-fiber based catalysts containing extra-low amounts of noble metals (0.01-0.02% mass of Pt or Pd) demonstrate unique performance in many catalytic reactions, resulted from the ability of the glass fibers to stabilize the transient metals in the glass bulk in a highly-dispersed form. Moreover, specific heat/mass transfer properties, original geometry, high flexibility and high mechanical strength of such catalysts give the way to develop really new catalytic processes and novel reactor designs. The paper is dedicated to the successful research and development (from fundamental research issues to pilot and semi-industrial tests) of different catalytic oxidation processes based on application …

Ethane Oxidation And Pyrolysis From 5 Bar To 1000 Bar: Experiments And Simulation, Abdul Aziz Abdul Raman

Abdul Aziz Abdul Raman

An extensive experimental study of ethane oxidation and pyrolysis has been conducted in the high pressure shock tube at UIC covering reflected shock pressures from 5-1000 bar, reaction temperatures up to 1550 K and stoichiometric (Φ = 1 ), fuel rich (Φ = 5), and pyrolytic mixtures. The experimental data has been used to develop a single model that can simulate the whole dataset very well and is the first ethane model capable of simulating experimental results over such an extensive range of pressure, temperature, and stoichiometry. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

On The Physicochemical Problems Of Aqueous Oxidation Of Polymetallic Gold Bearing Sulphide Ore In An Autoclave, Zeljko J. Kamberovic

Zeljko J Kamberovic

The paper presents a study on the physical and chemical changes of iron, copper and zinc sulphide minerals in process of pressure oxidation. Oxidation in autoclave is a pre-treatment unit operation for refractory sulphide ores and concentrates in order to valorisat gold, which is encapsuled mainly in pyrite matrix. Raw materials and solid residues are charasterisated. Basing on the results of chemical reactions and on shape of solids residue, we came to a conclusion concerning the mechanism of oxidation in autoclave. The results show that modelling of the process parameters of oxidation in autoclave can be used to predict efficiency …

Response Of Ti-6al-4v And Ti-24al-11nb Alloys To Dry Sliding Wear Against Hardened Steel Jun 2002

Response Of Ti-6al-4v And Ti-24al-11nb Alloys To Dry Sliding Wear Against Hardened Steel

A.S. Md Abdul Haseeb

Titanium alloys have been of great interest in recent years because of their very attractive combination of high strength, low density and corrosion resistance. Application of these alloys in areas where wear resistance is also of importance calls for thorough investigations of their tribological properties. In this work, Ti-6Al-4V and Ti-24Al-11Nb alloys were subjected to dry sliding wear against hardened-steel counter bodies and their tribological response was investigated. A pin-on-disc type apparatus was used with a normal load of 15-45N and sliding speed of 1.88 ms -1. In the steady state, it was demonstrated that Ti-24Al-11Nb had a substantially higher …
