Chain collapse and ionic aggregation of sodium salts of lightly sulphonated polystyrene (Na-SPS) in a poor solvent were simulated by molecular dynamics of a single ionomer chain in vacuum. Ionomers with a sulphonation level from 0 to 28 mol% and a polymerisation index of 50 were constructed by virtual copolymerisation of the ionic and nonionic species. Chain collapse occurred by a three-stage process. Local collapse of the ionomer occurred in the first stage, which was marked by sharp decreases in both the radius of gyration (Rg) and the chain end-to-end distance (D). The phase behavior of mixtures of bisphenol A polycarbonate and the zinc salts of lightly sulfonated polystyrene ionomers (Zn-SPS) was studied as a function of the sulfonation level and the molecular weight of the ionomer. This system exhibits upper critical solution temperature (UCST) phase behavior and miscibility is attributed to intramolecular repulsion between the ionic and non-ionic groups of the ionomer. The cloud point temperature decreased with increasing sulfonation level of the ionomer over the range of 8.7–13.7 mol.%, and it inscreased with increasing molecular weight of Zn-SPS for a fixed sulfonation level. The synthesis of chain-end sulfonated polystyrene [PS (ω-sulfonated PS)] by reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization followed by postpolymerization modification was investigated by two methods. In the first method, the polymer was converted to a thiol-terminated polymer by aminolysis. This polymer was then sulfonated by oxidation of the thiol end-group with m-chloroperoxybenzoic acid (m-CPBA) to produce a sulfonic acid end-group. In the second method, the RAFT-polymerized polymer was directly sulfonated by oxidation with m-CPBA. After purification by column chromatography, ω-sulfonated PS was obtained by both methods with greater than 95% end-group functionality as measured by titration. The sulfonic acid …
