Developing Professional Skills In Stem Students: Data Information Literacy, Lisa Zilinski, Megan R. Sapp Nelson, Amy S. Van Epps

Lisa Zilinski

Undergraduate STEM students are increasingly expected to have some data use skills upon graduation, whether they pursue post-graduate education or move into industry. This project was an initial foray into the application of data information literacy competencies to training undergraduate students to identify markers of data and information quality. The data consumer training appeared within two courses to help students evaluate data objects, including databases and datasets available on the Internet. The application of the Data Credibility Checklist provides a foundation for developing data reuse competencies. Based upon the initial presentation of the content, it became obvious that students need …

This presentation will discuss ongoing developments in a collaboration between the Purdue University Libraries and the Joint Transportation Research Program (JTRP). We will present a case study where a comprehensive work flow was developed that links technical report publication to cited data sets. The Libraries, JTRP, and researchers have leveraged this new model to increase research impact, reduce research redundancy, and incorporate data management into the research life cycle.

Sharing research data and scholarship is of national importance due to the increased focus on maximizing return on the government’s investment in research programs. Recent policy changes have directly affected the management and accessibility of publically-funded research. On January 18, 2011 the National Science Foundation (NSF) required data management plans to be submitted with all grant proposals. On February 22, 2013, the Office of Science and Technology Policy of the President of the United States extended a similar requirement to all federal agencies with research and development budgets of more than $100 million. These requirements illustrate the need for further …

"This year’s Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) U.S. report comes at a pivotal point in the race to address global climate change. While public policy, consumer concern, and stakeholder awareness have converged on the issue, the need for corporate America to actively confront the challenges a carbon-constrained global economy presents has never been more urgent."

The study of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) can be used as a model to understand neuro-biological mechanisms of behavior. Neuropharmacological and neuroanatomical studies of children with ADHD can be used to stimulate interest in these fields incorporating both clinical and basic issues. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the use of a multi-media computer application (Hyperstudio) in the presentation of complex neurobiological material using ADHD as a clinical example. The growing availability of computers and multi-media software in educational settings can enhance lectures and increase the opportunity for interactive study by students. The purpose of this paper …
