Application Of Gaussian Mixture Models To Simulated Additive Manufacturing, Jason Hasse, Semhar Michael, Anamika Prasad
Application Of Gaussian Mixture Models To Simulated Additive Manufacturing, Jason Hasse, Semhar Michael, Anamika Prasad
SDSU Data Science Symposium
Additive manufacturing (AM) is the process of building components through an iterative process of adding material in specific designs. AM has a wide range of process parameters that influence the quality of the component. This work applies Gaussian mixture models to detect clusters of similar stress values within and across components manufactured with varying process parameters. Further, a mixture of regression models is considered to simultaneously find groups and also fit regression within each group. The results are compared with a previous naive approach.

3d Printing Of Lunar Regolith Based Ceramics Via The Dlp Method, Ricardo Vasquez
2022 MME Undergraduate Research Symposium
Ceramic parts generally have poor machinability due to their high hardness and high brittleness. Researchers and industries have overcome the difficulty of machining ceramics and have manufactured parts with intricate geometry by using pre-ceramic polymers in stereolithography (SLA) 3D printing and using slurries based on ceramic powder and photopolymer resin in digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing, among other methods. This presentation will discuss the processes involved in the 3D printing of ceramic and ceramic composite parts via the DLP technique. A vital step in ceramic 3D printing is to optimize the printing parameters for a specific slurry formulation in …

A Qualitative Look Into Repair Practices, Jumana Labib
Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference
This research poster is based on a working research paper which moves beyond the traditional scope of repair and examines the Right to Repair movement from a smaller, more personal lens by detailing the 6 categorical impediments as dubbed by Dr. Alissa Centivany (design, law, economic/business strategy, material asymmetry, informational asymmetry, and social impediments) have continuously inhibited repair and affected repair practices, which has consequently had larger implications (environmental, economic, social, etc.) on ourselves, our objects, and our world. The poster builds upon my research from last year (see "The Right to Repair: (Re)building a better future"), this time pulling …
Application Of Phased Array Eddy Current (Paec) Nondestructive Technology For Stress Corrosion Cracking (Scc), Cameron A. Jones
Application Of Phased Array Eddy Current (Paec) Nondestructive Technology For Stress Corrosion Cracking (Scc), Cameron A. Jones
GS4 Georgia Southern Student Scholars Symposium
Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) is the constant growth of a crack or fault due to the tensile and corrosive stresses in a given environment. These cracks can potentially progress to sudden and catastrophic failures in metals exposed to tensile stress and corrosive environment. The over-whelming cost and damage caused by Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) is an immense amount of cost in many industries considering that SCC happens to produce a spontaneous failure due to overload stress. The topic of stress corrosion cracking has drastically changed the movement and progression of the production of better-quality products and engineering design such as, …

Rattle Detection – An Automotive Case Study, Orla Hartley
International Conference on Lean Six Sigma
This case study showcases the use of statistical tools to develop an objective Squeak and Rattle (S&R) measurement and detection test for End Of Line (EOL) sign off in an automotive manufacturing environment. Audio Induced S&R is an unwanted vibration within the vehicle caused by the sound system, impacting on customer perception of vehicle quality. Testing for S&R in an automotive environment has a key challenge; how to robustly detect a rattle at the EOL and thus prevent plant escapes to the customer. The objective test developed used microphones and analysers in order to replace an e subjective listening test. …
Sound, Material And Strength Correlation, Ryan Mcbride
Sound, Material And Strength Correlation, Ryan Mcbride
Symposium of Student Scholars
With a growing amount of manufacturing utilizing 3D printing, there is a correlation between strength and material which can affect sound produced by sirens. An air raid siren that has been downloaded from Thingiverse.com spins with a 49:1 gear ratio to produce 2 tone sounds and with that large number of revolutions comes friction, and in order to create a 3D printed air raid siren, the siren must be made out of a material that can withstand high temperatures without melting and quick rotations without delaminating. There are many materials that can be printed to withstand those forces, but it …

Angle-Iron Feed Measuring Device, Jason Robertson, Alex Welling, Jacob Burns
Scholar Week 2016 - present
Steel and iron are the building blocks with which we construct our world. From buildings to machines to transportation the use of these materials can be found in all aspects of life. In their crude form they do not have much use, so manufacturers standardize various shapes and sizes to create usable resources. These include bars, rods, beams, sheet, and angle iron. The team made up of three engineering students Jake Burns, Jason Robertson, and Alex Welling is working with a company called Peddinghaus. Peddinghaus produces equipment and machines to process steel and iron in their standard forms, such as …

An important attribute of the compression molding process is the requirement of (Sheet Molding Compound) SMC. The fibers, commonly glass or carbon fibers, are impregnated with thermoset resin and collected in continuous form on a conveyor belt. The SMC charge is rolled between rollers to wet out the fibers with resin. The SMC charge is then compression molded to a desired part reflecting the designed mold. The part could be an automotive part or any other industrial applicable part. Compression molding with fibers and polymers is the largest component of most of the manufacturing industries in the world. …
Additive Manufacturing Of High Solids Loading Hybrid Rocket Fuel Grains, Stephen P. Johnson
Additive Manufacturing Of High Solids Loading Hybrid Rocket Fuel Grains, Stephen P. Johnson
Scholar Week 2016 - present
Hybrid rocket motors offer many of the benefits of both liquid and solid rocket systems. Like liquid engines, hybrid rocket motors are able to be throttled, can be stopped and restarted, and are safer than solid rocket motors since the fuel and oxidizer are in different physical states. Hybrid rocket motors are similar to solid motors in that they are relatively simple and have a high density-specific impulse. One of the major drawbacks of hybrid rocket motors is a slower burning rate than solid rocket motors. Complex port geometries provide greater burning surface area to compensate for lower burning rates …

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Graphene is a 2-dimensional element of high practical importance. Despite its exceptional properties, graphene’s real applications in industrial or commercial products have been limited. There are many methods to produce graphene, but none has been successful in commercializing its production. Roll-to-roll plasma chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is used to manufacture graphene at large scale. In this research, we present a Bayesian linear regression model to predict the roll-to-roll plasma system’s electrode voltage and current; given a particular set of inputs. The inputs of the plasma system are power, pressure and concentration of gases; hydrogen, methane, oxygen, nitrogen and argon. This …
