Indirect Tensile Strength Of Clayey Soils Treated With Cement Or Lime, Melissa Adams Cowley
Indirect Tensile Strength Of Clayey Soils Treated With Cement Or Lime, Melissa Adams Cowley
Theses and Dissertations
The objectives of this research were to evaluate the sensitivity of indirect tensile strength (ITS) test results to stabilizer type, stabilizer concentration, and curing time for multiple clayey soils with varying plasticity indices (PIs), identify cases in which an ITS of 30 psi can be obtained, and create a general linear model that predicts ITS. The scope of work included laboratory testing of three clayey soils sampled from Monticello, Utah; Bloomington, Indiana; and San Antonio, Texas. Each soil was tested using two stabilizers, cement or lime, at three concentrations, and two replicate samples were prepared for each combination. ITS testing …
Strength And Durability Of Plastic Clays Treated With Cement Or Lime, Tyler D. Mickelson
Strength And Durability Of Plastic Clays Treated With Cement Or Lime, Tyler D. Mickelson
Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this research was to compare the efficacy of portland cement to that of lime for improving the strength and durability of plastic clays. The scope of work associated with this research involved laboratory strength and durability testing of three plastic clays treated with portland cement or lime. To ensure a broad application of the work, the clays were obtained from three different regions of the United States, specifically from project sites near Bloomington, Indiana; San Antonio, Texas; and Monticello, Utah. Laboratory testing included evaluation of selected properties of the three clays in the untreated condition and in …
Impact Of Formulation And Processing Parameters On Mechanical Properties Of Magadiite/Elastomer Composites, Yating Mao
Impact Of Formulation And Processing Parameters On Mechanical Properties Of Magadiite/Elastomer Composites, Yating Mao
Theses and Dissertations
This work seeks a better understanding of mechanical reinforcement and energy dissipation in elastomer composites containing the layered silicate magadiite (MGD, Na2Si14O29·nH2O). We characterized the elastomer’s accessibility into MGD interlayer spaces and studied the factors that influence the composite mechanical properties. We also compare the mechanical reinforcement of MGD with montmorillonite (MMT, a layered aluminosilicate clay mineral), which is widely used as filler in other kinds of nanocomposites. The study explores the grafting chemistry, vulcanization, and reinforcement mechanism in MGD/elastomer composites, which may help us to formulate the platelet/elastomer composites with superior mechanical properties and performance in the future. We …
Evaluation Of Laboratory Durability Tests For Stabilized Subgrade Soils, John Wesley Parker
Evaluation Of Laboratory Durability Tests For Stabilized Subgrade Soils, John Wesley Parker
Theses and Dissertations
The Portland Cement Association commissioned a research project at Brigham Young University to compare selected laboratory durability tests available for assessing stabilized subgrade materials. Improved understanding of these tests is needed to enable more objective selection of durability tests by design engineers and to facilitate more meaningful comparisons of data obtained for different stabilizer treatments using different evaluation procedures. The laboratory research associated with this project involved two subgrade materials, four stabilizers at three concentrations each, and three durability tests in a full-factorial experimental design. The two subgrade soils used were a silty sand and a lean clay, while the …
Loading Rate Effects On Axial Pile Capacity In Clays, Michael Paul Garner
Loading Rate Effects On Axial Pile Capacity In Clays, Michael Paul Garner
Theses and Dissertations
In order to design more efficient and reliable structures, axial load tests are performed on foundation piles. Traditionally, static tests with an average duration of approximately twenty-four hours have been performed on test piles to obtain their axial capacity. These static tests require multiple piles used as anchors in addition to the test pile. Static tests are both expensive and time consuming. An alternative to static testing is dynamic testing which requires sophisticated interpretation, can damage the pile and may not produce accurate results. There is a relatively new testing method called the Statnamic Testing Method which tests foundation piles …
