Comparing Polytechnic And Liberal Arts Institutions: Leaks In The System, Ryan Drew Baldwin Aug 2023

Comparing Polytechnic And Liberal Arts Institutions: Leaks In The System, Ryan Drew Baldwin

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

The United States has long been a pioneer in higher education, yet the last few decades have proven challenging in maintaining its lead in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields (STEM). Students entering postsecondary education and participating in a STEM degree face increased academic rigor and this study’s goal is to better understand factors that influence their retention. There are many psychosocial, environmental, and academic variables that may impact a student’s retention and this study aims to investigate how those variables inform a students likelihood of being retained and if there are meaningful differences between polytechnic and non-polytechnic institutions.

Experimental Investigation Of Surface Resistivity Of Yttrium Stabilized Zirconium As A Thin Film, Matthew J. Melfi May 2021

Experimental Investigation Of Surface Resistivity Of Yttrium Stabilized Zirconium As A Thin Film, Matthew J. Melfi

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Solid Oxide Fuel Cells are devices that use electrochemical reactions to convert chemical energy from fuel to electricity. In comparison with coal power plants, a Solid Oxide Fuel Cell, produces a higher electrical conversion efficiency. However, at higher temperatures (1000°C) it creates a lower ionic conductivity, which limit the Solid Oxide Fuel Cells. When lowering the temperature, the ohmic resistance increases. In our research, an Yttrium Stabilized Zirconium layer will be produced from a fine dimple grain structure allowing high flow of oxygen mobility. This mobility increases ionic conductivity and decrease ohmic loss. The goal of our research is first …

Electrical And Chemical Characterization Of A Helium-Air Non-Thermal Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Jet, Adam Zandani May 2020

Electrical And Chemical Characterization Of A Helium-Air Non-Thermal Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Jet, Adam Zandani

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Plasma is one of the most complicated, yet promising fields in physics due to its high efficiency and multitude of crucial applications such as biological sterilization, polymer modification, surface treatments, etching, agriculture, and facilitation of selective catalytic processes to name a few. With these advantages, mysteries still remain. With this in mind, in order to accurately gauge the total influence of the plasma applied in various processes, understanding what is being produced and how the production occurs is vital. To understand this, optical emission spectroscopy was used to gauge how the species generated are influenced by operation parameters such as …
