Hydrodynamics Of A Novel Design Circulating Fluidized Bed Steam Reformer Operating In The Dense Suspension Upflow Regime, Moataz Bellah M. Mousa, Seif-Eddeen K. Fateen, Essam A. Ibrahim

Seif-Eddeen K Fateen

Circulating fluidized bed steam reformers (CFBSR) represent an important alternative for hydrogen production, a promising energy carrier. Although the reactor hydrodynamics play crucial role, modeling efforts to date are limited to one-dimensional models thus ignoring many of the flow characteristics of fluidized-beds that have strong effects on the reactor efficiency. The flow inside the riser is inherently complex and requires at least two-dimensional modeling to capture its details. In the present work, the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations of the hydrodynamics of the riser part of a novel CFBSR were carried out using two-phase Eulerian-Eulerian approach coupled with kinetic theory …

Stochastic global optimization algorithms have shown promise in providing reliable and efficient solutions for phase stability and phase equilibrium problems in reactive and non-reactive systems. A special class of stochastic methods is Swarm Intelligence, in which search agents are allowed to interact with each other and with their environment, and benefit from their peers in their collective pursuit for the global minimum, resulting in an intelligent behavior unknown to the individual agents. Of special interest are swarm intelligence methods with less tunable algorithm parameters, which allow for easy and user-friendly implementation. In particular, this study introduces the Charged System Search, …

Seif-Eddeen K Fateen

Stochastic global optimization methods have been successfully used to solve phase stability problems. However, these methods may show some drawbacks in challenging phase stability problems. In this study, we made use of the gradient of the tangent plane distance function to improve the performance of Cuckoo Search (CS) algorithm, which is a promising nature-inspired swarm-based stochastic global optimization method, for the calculation of phase stability analysis. The new modified algorithm, Gradient-Based Cuckoo Search (GBCS), was evaluated for solving several challenging phase stability problems. Its performance at different numerical effort levels and the effect of stopping criterion have been analyzed. GBCS …

Unconstrained Gibbs Free Energy Minimization For Phase Equilibrium Calculations In Nonreactive Systems, Using An Improved Cuckoo Search Algorithm, Seif-Eddeen K. Fateen, Adrian Bonilla-Petriciolet

Seif-Eddeen K Fateen

This study introduces a strategy to improve the effectiveness of Cuckoo Search (CS) algorithm for the unconstrained Gibbs free energy minimization in phase equilibrium calculations of nonreactive systems. Specifically, the gradient information of the unconstrained Gibbs free energy function, which is readily available, is used to enhance the balance between diversification and intensification stages of the CS algorithm for phase-split calculations in multicomponent systems. The results showed that it is feasible to improve the numerical performance of the CS algorithm using the gradient information of the Gibbs free energy function; this improved method provides better results for phase equilibrium calculations …

A Kinetic Model For Ethylene Oligomerization Using Zirconium/Aluminum- And Nickel/Zinc-Based Catalyst Systems In A Batch Reactor, Adil A. Mohammed, Seif-Eddeen K. Fateen, Tamer S. Ahmed, Tarek M. Moustafa

Seif-Eddeen K Fateen

The aim of this work is to develop a kinetic model of the oligomerization of ethylene to Linear Alpha Olefins (LAOs) for zirconium/aluminum and nickel/zinc catalyst systems. The development of such model helps in the study of the behavior of industrial LAOs reactors as well as in the optimization of their operation. The kinetic model was developed based on a four-step mechanism: site activation, initiation and propagation, chain transfer and site deactivation. A novel stochastic optimization algorithm, Intelligent Firefly Algorithm, was used to obtain the kinetic model parameters that best fit the available experimental data that were obtained from published …

Optimizing The Sterilization Process Of Canned Food Using Temperature Distribution Studies, Ibrahim M. Ismail, Alaa Fahmy, Ahmed Azab, Magdy Abadir, Seif-Eddeen K. Fateen

Seif-Eddeen K Fateen

The thermal processing of canned food is the most important step in the canning procedure. Retort operating procedures must ensure that uniform processing temperature is achieved and maintained throughout the locations of the canned containers during the process. In this study, temperature distribution tests have been used as a means of verifying the temperature uniformity around the containers. These studies were carried out in two Egyptian canning plants in horizontal water-immersion and water-spray retorts under fully loaded operating conditions. Time-temperature data gathered were used as a guidance tool in improving temperature distribution and in optimizing the process schedule.

Semi-Empirical Correlation For Binary Interaction Parameters Of The Peng-Robinson Equation Of State With The Van-Der-Waals Mixing Rules For The Prediction Of High-Pressure Vapor-Liquid Equilibrium, Seif-Eddeen K. Fateen, Menna Khalil, Ahmed O. Elnabawy

Seif-Eddeen K Fateen

Peng-Robinson Equation of State is widely used with the classical van der Waals mixing rules to predict vapor liquid equilibria for system containing hydrocarbons and related compounds. This model requires good values of the binary interaction parameter kij. In this work, we developed a semi-empirical correlation for kij partly based on the Huron-Vidal mixing rules. We obtained values for the adjustable parameters of the developed formula for over sixty binary systems and over ten categories of components. The predictions of the new equation system were slightly better than the constant-kij model in most cases, except for ten systems whose predictions …

Seif-Eddeen K Fateen

In this work, Cuckoo Search is introduced for performing phase equilibrium and stability calculations for the first time. Cuckoo Search is a population-based method that mimics the reproduction strategy of cuckoos. This meta-heuristics have been successfully used for solving some engineering design and optimization problems with promising results. However, this emerging optimization method has not been applied in chemical engineering problems including thermodynamic calculations. This study reports the application of Cuckoo Search and its modified version for phase equilibrium and stability calculations in both reactive and non-reactive systems. Performance of this nature-inspired optimization method has been analyzed using several phase …

Evaluation Of Covariance Matrix Adaptation Evolution Strategy, Shuffled Complex Evolution And Firefly Algorithms For Phase Stability, Phase Equilibrium And Chemical Equilibrium Problems, Seif-Eddeen K. Fateen, Adrián Bonilla-Petriciolet, Gade P. Rangaiah

Seif-Eddeen K Fateen

Phase equilibrium calculations and phase stability analysis of reactive and non-reactive systems play a significant role in the simulation, design and optimization of reaction and separation processes in chemical engineering. These challenging problems, which are often multivariable and non-convex, require global optimization methods for solving them. Stochastic global optimization algorithms have shown promise in providing reliable and efficient solutions for these thermodynamic problems. In this study, we evaluate three alternative global optimization algorithms for phase and chemical equilibrium calculations, namely, Covariant Matrix Adaptation - Evolution Strategy (CMA-ES), Shuffled Complex Evolution (SCE) and Firefly Algorithm (FA). The performance of these three …

Circulating Fluidized Bed Steam Reformers (CFBSRs) represent an important alternative for the production of syngas for the Fisher-Tropsch (FT) process and for hydrogen production. Most research regarding this novel CFBSRs did not consider its hydrodynamic characteristics. In this work, the riser Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations were investigated using two phase Eulerian-Eulerian approach coupled with kinetic theory of granular flow with k-epsilon model to describe the turbulence of each phase. The model equations were solved via the commercial CFD package FLUENT, which uses the finite volume numerical approach. Cold flow simulations were carried out under the fast fluidization regime and …
