Much work has been done in improving the linearization of position sensitive devices, PSDs. However, a novel way of position detection using Gaussian filters has recently been developed. An obvious extension of this approach is possible via the electro-optical implementation of the Gaussian filters. This thesis proposes a PSD that has such a Gaussian output response to an incident light spot moving across its surface. The proposed device is based on a simple and inexpensive p-n junction. The device is simulated using finite-difference frequency-domain numerical analysis within Matlab.

The purpose of this research was to determine whether the city of El Paso will continue to be in attainment if the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) revises the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) of 8-hour average ozone concentration from 0.075 parts per million (ppm) to 0.070 ppm. For the duration of El Paso's ozone season, June-September 2012, two 2B Technology Ozone 202 monitors were deployed at proposed locations, not previously monitored. Gallium Oxide thin films were produced by sputter deposition by varying the substrate temperature (Ts) in a wide range (Ts=25-800 oC) and under variable deposition time. The structural characteristics and optical properties of Ga2O3 films were evaluated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS), Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS) and spectrophotometric measurements. This thesis presents the reasons why the fuel tax is no longer a viable source of revenues and suggests new sources of funding. One possibility is to replace the fuel tax with a distance-based toll applied nationwide. Vehicle miles travelled (VMT) fee is compared to the fuel tax, and the relationship between road infrastructure spending and fuel taxation in the United States (U.S.) and the European Union (EU) is explored. Potable water is becoming a scarce resource in many arid regions of the world. An experimental unit was designed and constructed to examine and characterize the production capabilities of a humidification-dehumidification (HDH) desalination process. An HDH cycle offers a viable, technologically light, alternative for producing fresh water from brackish water because the low relative humidity air is infused with water vapor through evaporation by means of conventional heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) components. Over the last three decades, developments within the area of Additive Manufacturing (AM) have resulted in novel technologies capable of producing highly customized, complex part geometries in a fraction of the lead time required by traditional manufacturing methods (e.g., injection molding, metal casting). In particular, fused deposition modeling (FDM), a material extrusion AM process, can produce parts using production-grade thermoplastics like acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, polycarbonate, and polyetherimide.
