Torque Limit Of A Mechanical Fastener In A Graphite/Epoxy Joint, Kristian M. Kostreva

Presently there is a lack of confidence amongst engineers when specifying the preload of a mechanical fastener in a composite joint due to a lack of a fundamental knowledge base regarding the behavior of composites under fastener compressive load. As such, a novel experimental procedure was developed herein to determine the through-the-thickness compressive (TTTC) material properties. A total of 206 property tests were performed on four different graphite/epoxy material systems. The results confirmed that TTTC material properties vary with fiber orientation, laminate thickness, fiber volume fraction, and even laminate surface finish. The Pilot Proficiency Audit Of Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities: Adding To The Air Carrier Safety Toolbox, James M. Walters

The correlation between air carrier pilot performance and age, total flight time, total airline flight time, and time in current position has not been fully documented. This study observed 62 F/Os in line operations and graded 74 knowledge, skills, and abilities performance variables, utilizing a five-point Likert scale. Knowledge items scored slightly below the referent, with no improvement over time; skills improved with both flight time and years of service; and abilities decline markedly across all independent variables. A meta-analytic (MA) approach was used to generate an estimate of true mean effect size (δ) for simulator motion with regard to pilot training transfer. The analysis was based on the techniques developed by Hunter and Schmidt (1990). A d statistic was used for effect size calculations based on information available in the included sources. Eleven studies were reviewed and considered for analysis, but only seven of these included the information necessary for calculating effect size and were included in the study. The purpose of this work was to model the acoustic emission (AE) flaw growth data that resulted from the tensile test of a unidirectional fiberglass/epoxy specimen. The data collected and stored during the test were the six standard AE quantification parameters for each event. A classification neural network was used to sort the data into five failure mechanism clusters. The resulting frequency histograms of the sorted data were then mathematically modeled herein using the three types of Johnson distributions: bounded, lognormal, and unbounded. The United States Department of Transportation and the Federal Aviation Administration's Aviation Instructors Handbook (D.O.T.) (1999) emphasizes that aviation students must maintain a healthy and positive state of mind in order to succeed at learning. Factors such as worry, lack of interest, physical discomfort, and anxiety are all listed as obstacles to a student's ability to learn successfully during flight instruction. In addition, numerous studies support the idea that a negative mood state will have a detrimental effect on learning. This study attempts to investigate the effects of an induced negative mood state on ground- based learning in student pilots.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate direct and indirect viewing of a remote manipulation. With continued exploration of inner and outer space, the ability to directly manipulate objects is lost due to the nature of operating in harsh environments. Remote viewing and operation of equipment is used in such things as the space shuttle manipulator arm, orthoscopic surgery, undersea exploration, and hazardous material management. Most of these operations do not have the luxury of direct viewing. This study will compare the effects of direct viewing vs. indirect viewing from three different viewing distances of 20cm, 60cm and 100cm.

This thesis was designed to detect the type of spatial ability most effected by auditory stimulation, as described in the Mozart effect. Previous research has shown enhancement of performance on the paper-folding and cutting subtest of the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale IV with failures to replicate in research using other measures. Seventy-five college students enrolled in introductory psychology classes were exposed to one of three types of auditory stimulation, followed by two measures of spatial ability. This study investigated the relationship between gender and competence as perceived by pilots. Scenarios were utilized that depicted an airline captain successfully landing an airplane amidst adverse conditions. Scenarios varied only by the gender of the Captain: male, female, or unspecified by variance of pilot name. Perceived effectiveness, competence, avoidance, blame, and attribution as depicted by the Captain's performance in the scenario were assessed by 30 male and 30 female certified flight instructors. Results showed that female flight instructors' ratings of avoidance ability and attribution for success differed from male flight instructors.
