Molecular Mechanisms Of Oxidative Stress On Molecular Motors, Addison Caspari-Linhardt
Molecular Mechanisms Of Oxidative Stress On Molecular Motors, Addison Caspari-Linhardt
Honors Theses
Astronauts encounter many forms of ionizing radiation during space travel. Ionizing radiation has been seen to cause cancer, cataracts, radiation sickness, tissue damage, hereditary effects, and damage to the central nervous system. Ionizing radiation can damage DNA molecules through oxidation, as well as other vital proteins like molecular motors. Kinesin-1 is a molecular motor protein that essential to intracellular transport. Microtubules serve as the “roadway” for kinesin transport, where kinesin converts chemical energy from ATP hydrolysis into mechanochemical “steps” to move along the microtubules. Optical trapping has been used in previous research to measure single kinesin motor properties. We have …
Effects Of Static Mixer Geometry On Polyurethane Properties, Christian R. Dixon
Effects Of Static Mixer Geometry On Polyurethane Properties, Christian R. Dixon
Honors Theses
The field of additive manufacturing has gained significant academic interest in the past few decades with a recently developed type of three-dimensional (3D) printing. Reactive extrusion additive manufacturing combines precursor materials within a static mixer (SM) head, where polymerization begins before deposition. Variable static mixer geometries currently exist, but the relationship between mixer geometry and post-polymerization mechanical properties is undefined. To elucidate this relationship, a series of experiments with identical chemistry was performed using a high shear SM, a low shear SM, and a comparative batch reaction. While higher shear mixing trends with faster polymerization for step-growth polymerizations, consistent precursor …

An Open-Baffle Motional Feedback Loudspeaker, Matthew Quinlivan, William Harvie
Honors Theses
A dynamic loudspeaker mounted in an open baffle has the same parameters as a loudspeaker in free space. A subwoofer mounted in an open baffle has a small total quality factor and therefore the frequency above which the driver has a significant output is too high despite the subwoofer's low resonant frequency. To address this issue, we implemented a motional feedback circuit with the goal of introducing both velocity feedback and acceleration feedback into the loudspeaker system and thus altering the resonant frequency and total quality factor of the system. After verifying the efficacy of our feedback circuit with computer …

Analyzing The Effects Of E-Hook Peptides On Kinesin-1, Ashton Ward Murrah, Baylee Hope Howard
Honors Theses
Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States. Cancerous growth is a result of oncogenes, or mutated genes that increase the rate of cell division in an uncontrolled manner. Cell division, which consists of mitosis and cytokinesis phases, is dependent upon the active movement of kinesin motor proteins along microtubules to rearrange the cytoskeleton for equitable distribution of genetic material to daughter cells. As kinesins are vital to this process, if we could prevent kinesin from binding to the microtubules, cell division would cease.
The goal of this study is to develop a method to prevent …
