Performance-Based Seismic Monitoring Of Instrumented Buildings, Milad Roohi
Performance-Based Seismic Monitoring Of Instrumented Buildings, Milad Roohi
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation develops a new concept for performance-based monitoring (PBM) of instrumented buildings subjected to earthquakes. This concept is achieved by simultaneously combining and advancing existing knowledge from structural mechanics, signal processing, and performance-based earthquake engineering paradigms. The PBM concept consists of 1) optimal sensor placement, 2) dynamic response reconstruction, 3) damage estimation, and 4) loss analysis. Within the proposed concept, the main theoretical contribution is the derivation of a nonlinear model-based observer (NMBO) for state estimation in nonlinear structural systems. The NMBO employs an efficient iterative algorithm to combine a nonlinear model and limited noise-contaminated response measurements to estimate …
Adhesion Of Bituminous And Cementitious Materials Using Particle-Probe Scanning Force Microscopy, Yujie Li
Adhesion Of Bituminous And Cementitious Materials Using Particle-Probe Scanning Force Microscopy, Yujie Li
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
As the most important materials in civil engineering, bituminous and cementitious materials have been used widely in pavements and constructions for many years. Accurate determination of adhesion is important to the bonding properties of bituminous and cementitious materials. In this work, we presented a novel approach to measure the adhesion between binders and aggregate mineral particles at microscopic scale.
Particle probe scanning force microscopes (SFM) were used to study the adhesion between mineral microspheres representing the primary aggregate constituents (Al2O3, SiO2 and CaCO3) and various control (PG 64-22 and PG 58-22) and modified binders. Results showed that these modified SFM …
Distributed Control Of Electric Vehicle Charging: Privacy, Performance, And Processing Tradeoffs, Micah Botkin-Levy
Distributed Control Of Electric Vehicle Charging: Privacy, Performance, And Processing Tradeoffs, Micah Botkin-Levy
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
As global climate change concerns, technological advancements, and economic shifts increase the adoption of electric vehicles, it is vital to study how best to integrate these into our existing energy systems. Electric vehicles (EVs) are on track to quickly become a large factor in the energy grid. If left uncoordinated, the charging of EVs will become a burden on the grid by increasing peak demand and overloading transformers. However, with proper charging control strategies, the problems can be mitigated without the need for expensive capital investments. Distributed control methods are a powerful tool to coordinate the charging, but it will …
Simulating Hydraulic Interdependence Between Bridges Along A River Corridor Under Transient Flood Conditions, Matthew Everett Trueheart
Simulating Hydraulic Interdependence Between Bridges Along A River Corridor Under Transient Flood Conditions, Matthew Everett Trueheart
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
The interactions between rivers, surrounding hydrogeological features, and hydraulic structures such as bridges are not well-established or understood at the network scale, especially under transient conditions. The cascading hydraulic effects of local perturbations up- and downstream of the site of perturbation may have significant, unexpected, and far-reaching consequences, and therefore often cause concern among stakeholders. The up- and downstream hydraulic impacts of a single structural modification may extend much farther than anticipated, especially in extreme events. This work presents a framework and methodology to perform an analysis of interdependent bridge-stream interactions along a river corridor. Such analysis may help prioritize …
Modeling Electric Vehicle Energy Demand And Regional Electricity Generation Dispatch For New England And New York, Sarah E. Howerter
Modeling Electric Vehicle Energy Demand And Regional Electricity Generation Dispatch For New England And New York, Sarah E. Howerter
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
The transportation sector is a largest emitter of greenhouse gases in the U.S., accounting for 28.6% of all 2016 emissions, the majority of which come from the passenger vehicle fleet [1,2]. One major technology that is being investigated by researchers, planners, and policy makers to help lower the emissions from the transportation sector is the plug-in electric vehicle (PEV). The focus of this work is to investigate and model the impacts of increased levels of PEVs on the regional electric power grid and on the net change in CO2 emissions due to the decrease tailpipe emissions and the increase in …
Sparsity Constrained Inverse Problems - Application To Vibration-Based Structural Health Monitoring, Chandler B. Smith
Sparsity Constrained Inverse Problems - Application To Vibration-Based Structural Health Monitoring, Chandler B. Smith
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
Vibration-based structural health monitoring (SHM) seeks to detect, quantify, locate, and prognosticate damage by processing vibration signals measured while the structure is operational. The basic premise of vibration-based SHM is that damage will affect the stiffness, mass or energy dissipation properties of the structure and in turn alter its measured dynamic characteristics. In order to make SHM a practical technology it is necessary to perform damage assessment using only a minimum number of permanently installed sensors. Deducing damage at unmeasured regions of the structural domain requires solving an inverse problem that is underdetermined and(or) ill-conditioned. In addition, the effects of …

Design, Prototyping And Fabrication Of Powder Spray Device For Dehydrated Biological Particulates, James Reilly
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
Tissue sealants of a liquid based formulation are widely studied in biomedical research with many starting to gain FDA approval. To date, little investigation has been put toward methods of application for tissue sealant materials, more specifically a powder based formulation. The focus of this research was to develop and prototype a powder spray device capable of administering powder based formulations with a long-term goal of integrating the device within the clinical setting. Powders can be administered in a variety of dry forms. These forms can range from non-homogenous nanoscale particles to homogeneous micro and nano-scale spheres. Incorporation of therapeutics …
Multi-Objective Optimization Mission Design For Small-Body Coverage Missions, David William Hinckley
Multi-Objective Optimization Mission Design For Small-Body Coverage Missions, David William Hinckley
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
Missions concerning small-body celestial objects are of growing interest due to the resources and information they can provide. Such missions require detailed information about the surface of the body for interactions, such as landing on the surface, as well as predicting the gravity field of the object. This work provides a means of optimizing the mission elements of trajectory and imaging target schedules so that the level of knowledge of the surface can be increased. The information required to increase one's knowledge of the surface is described as a set of conditions placed on the collection of images taken of …
An Analysis Of Energy Transitions At Different Scales: Fossil Fuel Divestment In Higher Education And Individual Behavior, Elizabeth Palchak
An Analysis Of Energy Transitions At Different Scales: Fossil Fuel Divestment In Higher Education And Individual Behavior, Elizabeth Palchak
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
A sociotechnical energy transition requires both a shift to new technologies and attention to social issues like political movements, policy and human behavior. This dissertation investigates social elements of the renewable energy transition occurring at different scales. The core research questions are: How are universities creating and responding to the shifting language of fossil fuel investments? How and for whom do behavioral interventions work? And finally, do in-home displays (IHDs) change behaviors and attitudes of millennial energy users?
The three studies covered here occurred within higher education and reflect the importance of colleges and universities as dynamic players in energy …
Quadrature-Based Gravity Models For The Homogeneous Polyhedron, Jason Pearl
Quadrature-Based Gravity Models For The Homogeneous Polyhedron, Jason Pearl
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
A number of missions to comets and asteroids have been undertaken by major space organizations driving a need to accurately characterize their gravitational fields. This is complicated however by their irregular shapes. To accurately and safely navigate spacecraft in these environments, a simple point-mass gravity model is insufficient and instead higher-fidelity models are required. Several such models exist for this purpose but all posess drawbacks. Moreover, there are some applications for which the currently available models are not particular well suited.
In this dissertation, numerical quadrature and curvilinear meshing techniques are applied to the small body gravity problem. The goal …
Energy Accommodation From Surface Catalyzed Reactions In Air Plasmas, Roland Herrmann-Stanzel
Energy Accommodation From Surface Catalyzed Reactions In Air Plasmas, Roland Herrmann-Stanzel
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
Accurate knowledge of heat transfer to materials in recombining plasmas is needed to improve heat shield designs. A lack of understanding of the chemical component of surface heating motivates the use of conservative assumptions with regards to surface catalysis in the design of thermal protection systems (TPS) that detrimentally impact payload capability. Chemical heating is the release of potential energy from recombining reactive species on the surface to form molecules. For a stable surface interacting with partially-dissociated air, the chemical heating component is due to surface-catalyzed recombination reactions of atomic O and N to produce molecular O2, N2, and NO. …
Acoustic Emission Sensing For Crack Monitoring In Prefabricated And Prestressed Reinforced Concrete Bridge Girders, Robert Lee Worley Ii
Acoustic Emission Sensing For Crack Monitoring In Prefabricated And Prestressed Reinforced Concrete Bridge Girders, Robert Lee Worley Ii
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
Prefabricated and pre-stressed reinforced concrete beams and girders are integral components of many highway structures, including those built by rapid construction techniques. Concerns exist regarding the development of cracks during curing, form removal, detensioning, transport, installation, and operation. Non-destructive, Acoustic Emission (AE) sensing techniques have the potential for detecting and locating cracking in prefabricated, pre-stressed concrete girders used as Prefabricated Bridge Elements and Systems (PBES) used in rapid construction practices as part of a Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) program. AE sensing records transient elastic waves produced by the release of stored elastic energy resulting in plastic deformations (i.e., crack nucleation …
Multi-Polarized Channel Characterization, Marcia Golmohamadi
Multi-Polarized Channel Characterization, Marcia Golmohamadi
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
Machine-to-machine (M2M) communication is becoming an important aspect of warehouse management, remote control, robotics, traffic control, supply chain management, fleet management and telemedicine. M2M is expected to become a significant portion of the Industrial Internet and, more broadly, the Internet of Things (IoT). The environments in which M2M systems are expected to operate may be challenging in terms of radio wave propagation due to their cluttered, multipath nature, which can cause deep signal fades and signal depolarization. Polarization diversity in two dimensions is a well-known technique to mitigate such fades. But in the presence of reflectors and retarders where multipath …
Optimal Dispatch Of Uncertain Energy Resources, Mahraz Amini
Optimal Dispatch Of Uncertain Energy Resources, Mahraz Amini
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
The future of the electric grid requires advanced control technologies to reliably integrate high level of renewable generation and residential and small commercial distributed energy resources (DERs). Flexible loads are known as a vital component of future power systems with the potential to boost the overall system efficiency. Recent work has expanded the role of flexible and controllable energy resources, such as energy storage and dispatchable demand, to regulate power imbalances and stabilize grid frequency. This leads to the DER aggregators to develop concepts such as the virtual energy storage system (VESS). VESSs aggregate the flexible loads and energy resources …
Interfacial Mechanical Behavior Between Nacreous Tablets Under Normal And Shear Stresses, Saleh Jaman Alghamdi
Interfacial Mechanical Behavior Between Nacreous Tablets Under Normal And Shear Stresses, Saleh Jaman Alghamdi
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
Nacre, a natural composite consisting of biogenic aragonite and protein, possesses superior strength and toughness compared to its brittle aragonite components. In this work, we first show that dry nacreous sections exhibit complete brittle fracture along the tablet interfaces at the proportional limit under pure shear of torsion. We quantitatively separate the initial tablet sliding primarily resisted by nanoscale aragonite pillars from the following sliding resisted by various microscale toughening mechanisms. In addition, we use the pure shear of torsion to demonstrate how hydrated nacre resists the initial tablet sliding by tuning its nanoscale toughening mechanisms. In hydrated nacre, hydrogen …
Coupled Thermal-Hydrological-Mechanical-Chemical Processes In Geothermal And Shale Energy Developments, Arash Kamali-Asl
Coupled Thermal-Hydrological-Mechanical-Chemical Processes In Geothermal And Shale Energy Developments, Arash Kamali-Asl
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
Coupled Thermal-Hydrological-Mechanical-Chemical (THMC) processes that exist in the development of different geo-resources (e.g. deep geothermal and shale gas) affect the fracture response (i.e. aperture and permeability), which in turn influences the reservoir production. The main goal of this study was to experimentally evaluate the impact of THMC processes on the response of rock specimens relevant for deep geothermal and shale gas formations. The effects of THMC processes were investigated on: (i) success of the hydraulic fracturing/hydro-shearing mechanism during stimulation stage, and (ii) closure of the created network of fractures during production stage.

Quantifying The Seismic Vulnerability Of Bridges In Low To Moderate Seismicity Regions, John Edward Lens
Quantifying The Seismic Vulnerability Of Bridges In Low To Moderate Seismicity Regions, John Edward Lens
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
The U.S. Congressional Research Service issued a report for Congress in May 2016, entitled” Earthquake Risk and U.S. Highway Infrastructure: Frequently Asked Questions” which highlighted the absence of a national database on the status of seismic vulnerability of bridges or other infrastructure, and thus no estimate of costs to retrofit vulnerable bridges. Low to moderate seismicity regions exist in each of the continental United States, with over 30 states having mostly or entirely low-to-moderate seismicity. Resources at state transportation agencies and municipalities are focused on higher seismicity regions, creating a gap in quantifying the system-wide seismic vulnerability despite an overall …
The Incorruptible Integrator: A Streamlined Approach To Imc-Pid Controller Tuning, Sam Wisotzki
The Incorruptible Integrator: A Streamlined Approach To Imc-Pid Controller Tuning, Sam Wisotzki
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
In automakers' never-ending quest to reduce emissions and improve performance, the turbocharger represents a major step in advancing these goals. By repurposing waste exhaust and compressing the air intake, they are able to increase overall power. One critical control loop in the turbocharger is control of boost pressure via the wastegate. This is a highly nonlinear process and experimental data has shown that a gain-scheduled PID (proportional integral derivative) controller developed with IMC (internal model control) tuning methodology is an effective means to control boost pressure. Motivated by this successful implementation of IMC-PID tuning in the automotive world, this work …
Atomistic Simulation Studies Of Grain-Boundary Segregation And Strengthening Mechanisms In Nanocrystalline Nanotwinned Silver-Copper Alloys, Xing Ke
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
Silver (Ag) is a precious metal with a low stacking fault energy that is known to form copious nanoscale coherent twin boundaries during magnetron sputtering synthesis. Nanotwinned Ag metals are potentially attractive for creating new interface-dominated nanomaterials with unprecedented mechanical and physical properties. Grain-boundary segregation of solute elements has been found to increase the stability of interfaces and hardness of nanocrystalline metals. However, heavily alloying inevitably complicates the underlying deformation mechanisms due to the hardening effects of solutes, or a change of stacking fault energies in Ag caused by alloying. For the above reasons, we developed a microalloying (or doping) …
Development And Characterization Of Multi-Crosslinking Injectable Hydrogels For Use In Cell And Drug Delivery, Jennifer Etter
Development And Characterization Of Multi-Crosslinking Injectable Hydrogels For Use In Cell And Drug Delivery, Jennifer Etter
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
Injectable hydrogels are important for use in tissue engineering due to their permeability and biocompatibility. Those that have shear thinning properties allow for minimally-invasive surgical procedures and a way to administer bioactive agents, and therapeutic cells by injection. Currently available injectable hydrogels have a single or dual input/stimulus for crosslinking which limits the range of mechanical properties and often utilize potentially toxic ultraviolet radiation that reduces viability of injected cells. To overcome these shortcomings, a tri-stimuli-responsive alginate-based injectable hydrogel was developed based on: 1) supramolecular complex formation between β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) conjugated alginate and thermo-responsive tri-block Pluronic® copolymers, 2) visible light …

Edge-Of-Field Hydrology And Nutrient Fluxes Within Northeastern Agroecosystems: Evaluation Of Alternative Management Practices And Water Quality Models, Cameron Robert Twombly
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
Agricultural runoff is one of largest contributors of phosphorus (P), nitrogen (N), and sediment affecting freshwater systems in watersheds across the Northeastern U.S., including the Lake Champlain Basin in Vermont. Agricultural cropping systems, such as corn silage and haylands, used for dairy feed production have been shown to impact watershed hydrology and water quality. Agricultural best management practices (BMPs) have the potential to decrease runoff volumes and flow rates and the associated export of nutrients and sediment from agricultural fields. Many states in the Northeastern U.S., including Vermont, are beginning to require farmers to implement water quality BMPs and further …
