The breakaway oxidation behaviour of ferritic stainless steels 430, 443 and 445 has been investigatedat 1150◦C in humid air. The oxidation kinetics exhibited significant differences among the three ferriticstainless steels. A uniform and steady growing oxide scale was developed on the 430 steel with an evensteel/oxide interface. Local breakdown of the initially protective oxide scale occurred and oxide noduleswere developed on the 443 and 445 stainless steels, resulting in irregular and rough steel/oxide inter-faces. The breakaway oxidation behaviour was significantly influenced by the microstructure and thecomposition of the oxide scale. The Mn-Cr spinel oxide formed on top of the Cr2O3scale …

Correlation Between Zn-Rich Phase And Corrosion/Oxidation Behavior Of Sn-8zn-3bi Alloy, Xin Zhang, Chong Li, Zhiming Gao, Yongchang Liu, Zongqing Ma, Liming Yu, Hui Jun Li

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The microstructure of Sn-8Zn-3Bi alloy was refined by increasing the solidification rate and the correlation between Zn-rich phase and the corrosion/oxidation behavior of the alloy was investigated. The Zn-rich phase transforms from coarse flakes to fine needles dispersed in the β-Sn matrix with the increase of the cooling rate. The transformation of Zn-rich precipitates enhances the anticorrosive ability of Sn-8Zn-3Bi alloy in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution. On the contrary, Sn-8Zn-3Bi alloy with a fine needle-like Zn-rich phase shows poor oxidation resistance under air atmosphere, due to the fast diffusion of Zn atoms in Sn matrix.

Effect Of Cooling Rate On Oxidation Behaviour Of Microalloyed Steel, Xianglong Yu, Zhengyi Jiang, Jingwei Zhao, Dongbin Wei, Cunlong Zhou Jan 2013

Effect Of Cooling Rate On Oxidation Behaviour Of Microalloyed Steel, Xianglong Yu, Zhengyi Jiang, Jingwei Zhao, Dongbin Wei, Cunlong Zhou

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Oxidation characteristics of a microalloyed low carbon steel were investigated by a hot rolling mill combined with acceleration cooling system over the cooling rate range from 20 to 70°C/s. The effects of cooling rate after hot rolling on microstructure and phase composition of oxide scale were examined. The results showed that the increase of the cooling rate has a significant influence on the decrease of the grain size and surface roughness of oxide scale. A higher cooling rate promotes the formation of retain wustite and primary magnetite precipitation while suppression of eutectoid α-iron precipitates. This provides the possibility to enhance …

Study On Oxidation Of Stainless Steels During Hot Rolling, Z Y. Jiang, D B. Wei, K Tieu, J X. Huang, A W. Zhang, X Shi, S H. Jiao

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The oxidation of stainless steels 304 and 304L during hot rolling is studied in this paper. Results show the oxide scale thickness decreases significantly with an increase of reduction, and the oxide scales of both 304 and 304L stainless steels were found more deformable than the steel substrate. Surface roughness shows a complicated transfer during the hot rolling process due to the complexity of oxide scale characteristics. Also, surface roughness decreases with an increase of reduction. The friction coefficient increases with reduction in all cases, and the increase is more significant in the case of the 304 stainless steel than …

Bifurcation Phenomena For An Oxidation Reaction In A Continuously Stirred Tank Reactor. Ii Diabatic Operation, Mark Nelson, Harvinder Sidhu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

We extend an investigation into the bifurcation phenomena exhibited by an oxidation reaction in an adiabatic reactor to the case of a diabatic reactor. The primary bifurcation parameter is the fuel fraction; the inflow pressure and inflow temperature are the secondary bifurcation parameters. The inclusion of heat loss in the model does not change the static steady-state bifurcation diagram; the organising centre is a pitchfork singularity for both the adiabatic and diabatic reactors. However, unlike the adiabatic reactor, Hopf bifurcations may occur in the diabatic reactor. We construct the degenerate Hopf bifurcation curve by determining the double-Hopf locus. When the …
