Reliability Modeling And Analysis For A Novel Design Of Modular Converter System Of Wind Turbines, Cai Wen Zhang, Tieling Zhang, Nan Chen, Tongdan Jin

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Converters play a vital role in wind turbines. The concept of modularity is gaining in popularity in converter design for modern wind turbines in order to achieve high reliability as well as cost-effectiveness. In this study, we are concerned with a novel topology of modular converter invented by Hjort, Modular converter system with interchangeable converter modules. World Intellectual Property Organization, Pub. No. WO29027520 A2; 5 March 2009, in this architecture, the converter comprises a number of identical and interchangeable basic modules. Each module can operate in either AC/DC or DC/AC mode, depending on whether it functions on the generator or …

This paper proposes a new control strategy and a novel modulation technique for a grid-connected photo-voltaic (PV) system using a single-phase five-level flying capacitor (FC) based active-neutral-point-clamped (ANPC) converter. The proposed modulator can control the FC voltage to follow the requested reference value and simultaneously generate the required ac output voltage regardless of the values of the dc capacitor voltages of the converter. By implementing this method, smaller values of dc-link and flying capacitors can be used even in applications that could experience ripple or transient in the capacitors voltage. In the grid-connected single-phase five-level ANPC, where the capacitors can …

The Seven-Level Flying Capacitor Based Anpc Converter For Grid Intergration Of Utility-Scale Pv Systems, Georgios Konstantinou, Sridhar R. Pulikanti, Mihai Ciobotaru, Vassilios G. Agelidis, Kashem Muttaqi

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The installed capacity of grid connected PV plants has increased significantly over the past few years and is expected to continue its growth over the next decade due to the continuous demand for renewable energy and distributed generation systems. This paper presents a seven-level flying capacitor (FC) based active neutral point clamped (ANPC) converter for the connection of utility-scale PV system to the electricity grid. The multilevel voltage output of the topology provides high quality waveforms while maintaining the operational characteristics of NPC based converters for PV systems. The converter topology together with a method to regulate the FC voltages …

Control Of Five-Level Flying Capacitor Based Active-Neutral-Point-Clamped Converter For Grid Connected Wind Energy Applications, Sridhar R. Pulikanti, Kashem Muttaqi, D Suntanto

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Integration of wind energy sources into the distribution grid affects the voltage profile that could be stabilized through the grid reinforcement or limiting the active power injection. This paper presents a control strategy to regulate the voltage at point of common coupling (PCC) through reactive power exchange to the grid. The reactive power capability of the grid-connected hybrid multilevel converter is based on the voltage sensitivity of the distribution grid at PCC. A hybrid five-level multilevel converter referred as flying capacitor (FC) based active-neutral-point-clamped (ANPC) converter is considered. It is an arrangement of a three-level ANPC converter and a two-level …

An N-Level Flying Capacitor Based Active Neutral-Point-Clamped Converter, Sridhar R. Pulikanti, Georgios S. Konstantinou, Vassilios G. Agelidis

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

An n-level flying capacitor (FC) based active neutral point clamped (ANPC) converter is discussed in this paper. The converter is based on an arrangement of a three-level ANPC converter and a number of two-level cells creating an n-level line-to-neutral waveform. The converter is operated under a phase-shifted carrier pulse-width modulation (PWM). The mathematical model for the DC-link capacitors voltage behavior of a three-phase arrangement is also presented. It is shown through simulations and experimental work that the voltage of flying capacitors can naturally balance to the required level in order to generate multilevel waveform. Simulations and experimental work of a …

Seven-Level Cascaded Anpc-Based Multilevel Converter, Sridhar R. Pulikanti, Georgios S. Konstantinou, Vassilios G. Agelidis Jan 2010

Seven-Level Cascaded Anpc-Based Multilevel Converter, Sridhar R. Pulikanti, Georgios S. Konstantinou, Vassilios G. Agelidis

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A seven-level converter based on the cascaded connection of a three-level active neutral-point-clamped (ANPC) converter and individual H-bridge cells per phase is presented in this paper. This converter only requires a single DC source for all three phases and extends the amplitude of output voltage of the converter with similar DC-link voltage. The operation principles and control strategies based on a fundamental frequency harmonic elimination PWM are discussed. The regulation of FC voltage depends on the positions of switching angles over a quarter period in the available solutions and on the load power factor. In order to extend the regulation …

Five-Level Active Npc Converter Topology: She-Pwm Control And Operation Principles, Sridhar Reddy Pulikanti, Vassilios G. Agelidis Jan 2007

Five-Level Active Npc Converter Topology: She-Pwm Control And Operation Principles, Sridhar Reddy Pulikanti, Vassilios G. Agelidis

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The neutral-point-clamped (NPC) inverter topology has been the centre of research and development effort for numerous applications, including medium- and high-voltage electric motor drives, static compensators (STATCOMs) and other utility type of power electronic systems for almost three decades now. Pulse-width modulation (PWM) control methods have been developed for such topology for respective three-level and multilevel versions. The issue of voltage balancing between the DC bus capacitors is a drawback that requires attention and the problem becomes more serious as the number of levels increases. Selective harmonic elimination PWM can be applied to control the topology as a method to …
