A direct exchange building integrated photovoltaic and thermal (BIPV/T) heat pump system is proposed where the heat extracted from the BIPV is used to drive the heat pump. To ensure a more stable diurnal system performance, especially at low solar conditions, air flow is instituted in the cavity between BIPV façade and the insulated inner wall. The airflow is directed from the heated or cooled space into the air channel and can be exhausted or returned to the space depending on the building operating conditions. Microalgae has been identified as a potential source for the production of biofuels and other bio-products. The growth of microalgae is sensitive to the temperature variations inside the photobioreactor. The present research investigated an innovative approach to thermally regulate photobioreactors by introducing passive thermal energy storage using phase change material (PCM). The research was specifically focused on a novel design to integrate thermal storage in the reactor channel in the form of offset columns containing PCM. The effects of turbulence in the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) on surface pressures of a typical low-rise building roof are investigated in this thesis. A 1/50 geometrically-scaled model of the Texas Tech University Wind Engineering Field Research Lab (WERFL) building model is used for pressure measurements in wind tunnel experiments. ABL wind turbulence intensities ranging from about 10% to 30%, and length scales ranging from 6 to 12 times of the building height (H) are generated. Investigations of separated and reattaching flows over three-dimensional bluff bodies in turbulent boundary layers are important because of the large aerodynamic loads that these flows cause. For example, roofs of low-rise buildings are vulnerable to this kind of wind loading. Turbulence in the upstream flow affects the pressure distributions and the mean size of separation bubbles formed on bluff body surfaces. The effect of mixed convection on low Reynolds numbers flow inside a horizontal square channel heated from below have been investigated experimentally. The channel flow rate ranged from 0.0210 kg/s to 0.0525 kg/s which correspond to Reynolds numbers between 300 and 750 in the absence of heating. The channel bottom surface temperature was controlled and varied from 30 ºC to 55 ºC (Grashof number ranged between 6.37×106 and 3.86×107). Ischemic stroke is often a consequence of complications due to clot formation (i.e. thrombosis) at the site of an atherosclerotic plaque developed in the internal carotid artery. Hemodynamic factors, such as shear-stress forces and flow disturbances, can facilitate the key mechanisms of thrombosis. Atherosclerotic plaques can differ in the severity of stenosis (narrowing), in eccentricity (symmetry), as well as inclusion of ulceration (wall roughness). Therefore, in terms of clinical significance, it is important to investigate how the local hemodynamics of the carotid artery is mediated by the geometry of plaque.
