Optimization Of Advanced Building Integrated Photovoltaic And Thermal System With Dual Working Fluid, Barilelo E. Nghana Mar 2022

Optimization Of Advanced Building Integrated Photovoltaic And Thermal System With Dual Working Fluid, Barilelo E. Nghana

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

A direct exchange building integrated photovoltaic and thermal (BIPV/T) heat pump system is proposed where the heat extracted from the BIPV is used to drive the heat pump. To ensure a more stable diurnal system performance, especially at low solar conditions, air flow is instituted in the cavity between BIPV façade and the insulated inner wall. The airflow is directed from the heated or cooled space into the air channel and can be exhausted or returned to the space depending on the building operating conditions. The flow and geometrical parameters of the BIPV/T façade are optimized such that more than …

Urban Heat Mitigation For Current And Future Conditions: A Case Study For Downtown London On, Maryam Shams Aug 2021

Urban Heat Mitigation For Current And Future Conditions: A Case Study For Downtown London On, Maryam Shams

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The urban heat island is a phenomenon wherein urban areas experience warmer temperatures than their surrounding rural areas. Techniques to reduce excess heat in urban environments are known as heat mitigation or heat island mitigation solutions, with the intent that they reduce urban temperatures. This research presents an investigation on the impacts and effectiveness of urban heat mitigation techniques on improving the outdoor thermal conditions of downtown London, Ontario. The impact of increasing vegetated areas and applying higher albedo materials for road pavements is assessed with ENVI-Met software for current and future summer weather. Furthermore, investigations were conducted for current …

Numerical And Semi-Analytical Estimation Of Convective Heat Transfer Coefficient For Buildings In An Urban-Like Setting, Anwar Demsis Awol Dec 2019

Numerical And Semi-Analytical Estimation Of Convective Heat Transfer Coefficient For Buildings In An Urban-Like Setting, Anwar Demsis Awol

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Urban building arrangements such as packing density, orientation and size are known to influence the microclimate surrounding each building. Studies on the impact of urban microclimatic changes on convective heat transfer coefficient (CHTC) from a stock of buildings, however, have been rare in surveyed literature. The present study focuses on numerical and analytical investigation of CHTC from building-like models with homogeneous set of equal and unequal planar and frontal densities. Consequently, the study discusses the CHTC response in relation to broader changes in the urban surface form. Part of the process involves the development of a simplified one-dimensional semi-analytical CHTC …

Transient Analysis Of Full Scale And Experimental Downburst Flows, Junayed Chowdhury Nov 2018

Transient Analysis Of Full Scale And Experimental Downburst Flows, Junayed Chowdhury

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Downbursts are highly transient natural phenomena which produce strong downdrafts evolving from a cumulonimbus cloud They induce an outburst of damaging winds on or near to the ground causing an immense damage to the ground mounted structures and aircrafts. This study investigates the transient nature of downbursts using wind speed records from full scale downburst events employing an objective methodology. This method can detect the abrupt change points in a downburst time series based on statistical parameters such as mean, standard deviation and linear trend. In addition to the analysis of the full scale downburst events, several large scale experimental …

Wind And Thermal Effects On Ground Mounted Photovoltaic (Pv) Panels, Chowdhury Mohammad Jubayer Dec 2014

Wind And Thermal Effects On Ground Mounted Photovoltaic (Pv) Panels, Chowdhury Mohammad Jubayer

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

A combination of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations and wind tunnel experiments are carried out to investigate the effects of wind on the aerodynamic loading and heat transfer of a ground mounted stand-alone photovoltaic (PV) panel with tilt angle of 25o in open country atmospheric boundary layer. Several azimuthal wind directions are considered: Southern 0o, Southwest 45o, Northwest 135o and Northern 180o. Three dimensional Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) approaches with an unsteady solver using Shear Stress Transport (SST) k-ω turbulence closure are employed for the CFD simulations, whereas Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and …

Wind-Induced Pressures In Air Permeable, Double-Layer Roof Systems In Regions Of Separated Flow, Jeong Hee Oh Aug 2014

Wind-Induced Pressures In Air Permeable, Double-Layer Roof Systems In Regions Of Separated Flow, Jeong Hee Oh

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis is concerned with the wind-induced pressure distribution acting on air permeable, double-layer roof systems placed on low-rise buildings. Because of the pressure transmission into the cavity between layers, the pressure difference in the double-layer systems differs significantly from that in a single layer. The interior pressures (in the cavity between layers) are highly correlated with external pressures at the openings on the external surface of the outer layer and thereby, the net wind load for the design of the outer layer is considerably reduced by the pressure equalization between the external and internal surfaces of the outer layer. …
