Disinfection byproducts (DBPs) presence in wastewater effluents and receiving waters may impact the quality of drinking water during water reuse practices. Natural solar photolysis is one of the biogeochemical processes that may lead to decreased DBPs concentrations in water. Media filtration has received increasing attention as an effective technology that can facilitate the removal of particles and dissolved pollutions in the stormwater. However, most traditional media filtration systems are generally ineffective in removing bacteria, causing pollution of groundwater and receiving surface water. In this study, recycled steel chips were evaluated as low-cost filter materials for bacterial removal from stormwater. Speed limit increases, particularly on interstates have been studied and researched many times over the course of the last 50 years in the United States. These research efforts began after the implementation of the National Maximum Speed Law (NMSL), which reduced all speed limits to a maximum of 55-mph. In the years that followed, this restriction was relaxed to 65-mph with the Surface Transportation and Uniform Relocation Assistance Act (STURAA) and ultimately repealed later by the National Highway System Designation Act (NHSDA). Two important aspects of the problem are the mechanism of sediment suspension and the distribution of the suspended sediment. The current thesis presents the findings of a study conducted on asphalt mixes to evaluate their moisture-induced damage potential through testing of the plant produced asphalt mixes in South Dakota using local aggregates and commonly used asphalt binders. The moisture-induced damage potentials of the asphalt mixes were evaluated by conducting tensile strength ratio (TSR) and modified Semicircular Bend (SCB) tests. The South Dakota Department of Transportation SDDOT uses the Ohio Highway Department’s Typical Moisture Density Curves for preforming compaction quality control on granular soil materials in junction with standard moisture density relations. The SDDOT also uses the Nuclear Density Gauge NDG, Sand Cone, and Rubber Balloon methods to conduct in-situ density tests. Compaction quality control of recycled pavements is conducted using test strips. The test strip method works well for large areas but becomes problematic for small areas. Climate variability need to be incorporated into the management and planning of water resources, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions, where water availability is more sensitive to rainfall and air temperature. This study used modified Man-Kendall trend analysis test and ArcGIS to process data. Annual means of rainfall, minimum temperature and maximum temperature in the Limpopo River Basin (LRB) varied between 160 and 1109 mm, 8 °C to 20 °C and 23 °C to 32 °C respectively. To fill a gap in the literature, this thesis explored the mechanical properties for alternative roof beams of a historic Native American Hidatsa earth lodge. The research demonstrates that in those alternative beams, when Moisture Content (MC) increases, Modulus of Elasticity (E) decreases and deflection increases. The procedure included obtaining dimensions for alternative beams from scaled sketches created by ethnographers and informants who recorded an actual Hidatsa earth lodge in the early 1800s (confirmed by other sources) although no material properties studies have resulted.
