Discovery Of Design Methodologies, Cirrus Shakeri, David Brown, Mohammad Noori Dec 2015

Discovery Of Design Methodologies, Cirrus Shakeri, David Brown, Mohammad Noori

David C. Brown

In this paper we present an AI-based approach for the discovery of design methodologies for multi-disciplinary design situations. The approach is based on simulating the design process using a multi-agent system that mimics the behavior of the design team. The system activates the pieces of design knowledge when they become applicable. The use of knowledge by agents is recorded by tracing the steps that the agents have taken during a design project. Many traces are generated by solving a large number of design projects that differ in their requirements. A set of design methodologies is constructed by using clustering techniques …

Engineering Design: Representation And Reasoning, Clive Dym, David Brown Dec 2015

Engineering Design: Representation And Reasoning, Clive Dym, David Brown

David C. Brown

This text demonstrates that symbolic representation, and related problem-solving methods, offer significant opportunities to clarify and articulate concepts of design to give a better framework for design research and education. This edition includes recent work on design reasoning, computational design, AI in design, and design cognition, with pointers to the current literature.

Discovering Methodologies For Integrated Product Design, Cirrus Shakeri, David Brown, Mohammad Noori Dec 2015

Discovering Methodologies For Integrated Product Design, Cirrus Shakeri, David Brown, Mohammad Noori

David C. Brown

The current methodologies for multi-disciplinary product design are based on compromising between different disciplines rather than integrating them. These methodologies do not use a systematic and holistic approach to the problem of multi-disciplinary design and thus are piecemeal rather than comprehensive. This paper presents a new approach to producing design methodologies for integration of the different disciplines in the design process. A multi-agent system has been developed that designs a 2-DOF robot arm by incorporating five proposed strategies for integration between disciplines. Design methodologies are extracted by tracking the system and generalizing the traces that are produced. The results show …

Design And Construction Process Management, David Brown Dec 2015

Design And Construction Process Management, David Brown

David C. Brown

New approaches for improving design and construction processes have been used recently. Innovative methods for managing the requirements and quality of these processes will be discussed. A systematic data centric approach will be discussed as well as the processes of separating progress from performance. It discusses the integration of these processes in the planning, risk analysis, design, submission, construction, inspection, quality control and documentation phases.

Comparing Mathematical And Heuristic Approaches For Scientific Data Analysis, Aparna Varde, Shuhui Ma, Mohammed Maniruzzaman, David Brown, Elke Rundensteiner, Richard Sisson Dec 2015

Comparing Mathematical And Heuristic Approaches For Scientific Data Analysis, Aparna Varde, Shuhui Ma, Mohammed Maniruzzaman, David Brown, Elke Rundensteiner, Richard Sisson

Scientific data is often analyzed in the context of domain-specific problems, for example, failure diagnostics, predictive analysis, and computational estimation. These problems can be solved using approaches such as mathematical models or heuristic methods. In this paper we compare a heuristic approach based on mining stored data with a mathematical approach based on applying state-of-the-art formulae to solve an estimation problem. The goal is to estimate results of scientific experiments given their input conditions. We present a comparative study based on sample space, time complexity, and data storage with respect to a real application in materials science. Performance evaluation with …
