Assessing Mechanical Performance Of Dissimilar Steel Systems Made Via Wire-Arc Additive Manufacturing, Obed Daniel Acevedo
Assessing Mechanical Performance Of Dissimilar Steel Systems Made Via Wire-Arc Additive Manufacturing, Obed Daniel Acevedo
Masters Theses
Hot stamping is part of a specific type of metalworking procedure widely used in the automotive industry. This research seeks to help make hot stamp tooling component production more cost-effective by using large-scale additive manufacturing. Additive manufacturing can produce dissimilar steel components that can be more cost-effective and time-efficient and allow for complex geometries to be made. A dissimilar steel system consisting of 410 martensitic stainless steel and AWS ER70S-6 mild steel is proposed to make hot stamps, making them more cost-efficient. However, the material interface's mechanical behavior in 410SS-mild steel additively manufactured material systems is not well understood. This …
Human Fatigue Predictions In Complex Aviation Crew Operational Impact Conditions, Suresh Rangan
Human Fatigue Predictions In Complex Aviation Crew Operational Impact Conditions, Suresh Rangan
Doctoral Dissertations
In this last decade, several regulatory frameworks across the world in all modes of transportation had brought fatigue and its risk management in operations to the forefront. Of all transportation modes air travel has been the safest means of transportation. Still as part of continuous improvement efforts, regulators are insisting the operators to adopt strong fatigue science and its foundational principles to reinforce safety risk assessment and management. Fatigue risk management is a data driven system that finds a realistic balance between safety and productivity in an organization. This work discusses the effects of mathematical modeling of fatigue and its …
Mechanical Behavior Of Pipeline Steels And An Al0.1cocrfeni High-Entropy Alloy, Bilin Chen
Mechanical Behavior Of Pipeline Steels And An Al0.1cocrfeni High-Entropy Alloy, Bilin Chen
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation is composed of two parts. The first part focuses on the mechanical behavior study on pipelines steels. More specifically, the effect of hydrogen on the deformation behavior of the crack tip of an X52 pipeline steel specimen, and the overload effects on the fatigue crack growth of an x70 pipeline weld metal are discussed. For the second part of the dissertation, fatigue behavior of an Al0.1CoCrFeNi high-entropy alloy (HEA) is studied, and the influence of heat treatment is discussed.
The objectives of the first part of this proposed work are to (1) detect the influence of hydrogen on …
Dynamic Monitoring And Life Prediction Of Internal Strain-Gage Balances, David Leon Yoder
Dynamic Monitoring And Life Prediction Of Internal Strain-Gage Balances, David Leon Yoder
Masters Theses
Wind tunnel test customers continue to push the limits by producing air vehicle designs that produce high aerodynamic loads at the desired test conditions. These loads are a combination of steady aerodynamic, unsteady aerodynamic, and inertial forces. A methodology to monitor the health of a wind tunnel strain-gage balance has been developed. The objective of this methodology is to define the stress limits of the balance and monitor these limits so the balance can be safely tested without failure of the balance. A balance failure could result in costly damage to the wind tunnel model, support system, and the wind …

High Energy Synchrotron X-Ray Study Of Fatigue Damage In Amorphous And Polycrystalline Engineering Alloys, Chih-Pin Chuang
High Energy Synchrotron X-Ray Study Of Fatigue Damage In Amorphous And Polycrystalline Engineering Alloys, Chih-Pin Chuang
Doctoral Dissertations
The dissertation summarizes a series of studies on the fatigue damage of both amorphous and crystalline engineering alloys. The attention focuses on the utilization of synchrotron x-ray scattering related techniques for advanced material characterizations. In the first part of the research, critical issues regarding the mechanical response and structural evolution of Bulk-Metallic Glasses (BMGs) in the elastic region are addressed. The effects of cyclic-loading on the microstructures of an amorphous alloy are investigated, aiming to provide better mechanistic understandings of fatigue damage in BMGs. The second part of the research focuses on the characterization method based on two-dimensional X-ray diffraction …
Fatigue Behavior Of High-Entropy Alloys, Michael Alexander Hemphill
Fatigue Behavior Of High-Entropy Alloys, Michael Alexander Hemphill
Masters Theses
Research was performed on the Al9Co18.2Cr18.2Cu18.2Fe18.2Ni18.2 [subscripts atomic percent] and Al7.5Cr22.5Fe35Mn20Ni15 high-entropy alloys (HEAs) in an attempt to study their fatigue behavior. The present investigation shows encouraging fatigue-resistance characteristics due to their high fatigue lives of various samples at relatively high stresses. The current results indicate that the fatigue behavior of HEAs compares favorably to many conventional alloys, such as steels, titanium alloys, and advanced bulk metallic glasses with a fatigue-endurance limit of the Al9Co18.2Cr18.2 …
Durability And Fatigue Behavior Of Cip Concrete Connections For Accelerated Bridge Construction, Peng Zhu
Durability And Fatigue Behavior Of Cip Concrete Connections For Accelerated Bridge Construction, Peng Zhu
Doctoral Dissertations
Continuous longitudinal and transverse U-bar joint connections between flanges of the decked bulb-Ts (DBTs) or between precast panels for accelerated bridge construction are investigated. The procedure for selecting durable closure pour (CP) materials for the connections is discussed firstly. The accelerated construction is quantified as two categories: overnight cure and 7-day cure of CP materials. Candidate materials are selected first based on literature review as well as tests of compressive strength and flow and workability. Then, performance criteria for selecting durable CP materials for both categories are developed based on durability tests of selected candidate materials. These durability tests include …
Monotonic And Cyclic Compression Behavior Of Bulk Metallic Glasses, Matthew Webster Freels
Monotonic And Cyclic Compression Behavior Of Bulk Metallic Glasses, Matthew Webster Freels
Doctoral Dissertations
The cyclic-compression behavior of a Cu45Zr45Al5Ag5 bulk metallic glass (BMG) was investigated in order to elucidate the damage initiation and growth mechanisms. The present Cu45Zr45Al5Ag5 BMG was found to have the highest fatigue-endurance limit for BMGs reported to date. Fracture under cyclic compression occurred in a pure shear mode. In addition to many shear bands and cracks, areas of “chipping” were commonly found on the outside surfaces of the fatigue specimens. Crack growth rates were found decrease with cycles.
The effects of the as-cast specimen size, cooling rate, and the free volume content on the monotonic and cyclic compression behavior …
