Maximizing Space Utilization In Unit-Load Warehouses., Luis Felipe Cardona Olarte May 2019

Maximizing Space Utilization In Unit-Load Warehouses., Luis Felipe Cardona Olarte

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In a unit-load warehouse, products are stored and retrieved in pallet quantities. Examples include retail distribution centers (DC), third-party DCs, and transshipment hubs in freight transportation. Expenses related to space are a significant component of the operational cost of unit-load warehouses; therefore, maximizing space utilization is important. Moreover, the continuing revolution of retail e-commerce is changing the role and design of modern distribution centers (Boysen et al., 2018). An important trend with serious implications for design is the desire of many distributors to locate DCs in or near metropolitan areas in order to support same-day service or better (Thuermer, 2018). …

Automatic Signal And Image-Based Assessments Of Spinal Cord Injury And Treatments., Samineh Mesbah

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is one of the most common sources of motor disabilities in humans that often deeply impact the quality of life in individuals with severe and chronic SCI. In this dissertation, we have developed advanced engineering tools to address three distinct problems that researchers, clinicians and patients are facing in SCI research. Particularly, we have proposed a fully automated stochastic framework to quantify the effects of SCI on muscle size and adipose tissue distribution in skeletal muscles by volumetric segmentation of 3-D MRI scans in individuals with chronic SCI as well as non-disabled individuals. We also developed …

Receptive Fields Optimization In Deep Learning For Enhanced Interpretability, Diversity, And Resource Efficiency., Babajide Odunitan Ayinde

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In both supervised and unsupervised learning settings, deep neural networks (DNNs) are known to perform hierarchical and discriminative representation of data. They are capable of automatically extracting excellent hierarchy of features from raw data without the need for manual feature engineering. Over the past few years, the general trend has been that DNNs have grown deeper and larger, amounting to huge number of final parameters and highly nonlinear cascade of features, thus improving the flexibility and accuracy of resulting models. In order to account for the scale, diversity and the difficulty of data DNNs learn from, the architectural complexity and …

Numerical Investigation Of Coalescence-Induced Self-Propelled Behavior Of Droplets On Non-Wetting Surfaces And Wedged Surfaces., Yan Chen May 2019

Numerical Investigation Of Coalescence-Induced Self-Propelled Behavior Of Droplets On Non-Wetting Surfaces And Wedged Surfaces., Yan Chen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

When small drops coalesce on a superhydrophobic surface, the merged drop can jump away from the surface due to the surface energy released during the coalescence. This self-propelled behavior has been observed on various superhydrophobic surfaces and has potential applications in areas related to the heat and mass transfer, such as heat exchangers, anti-icing and anti-frost devices, thermal management and water harvesting. The jumping velocity model was obtained based on published experimental data and the balance of various energy terms described in previous studies. However, the self-propelled mechanism is still not fully understood. In this study, the self-propelled droplet phenomenon …

A Study On Ultrasonic Energy Assisted Metal Processing : Its Correeltion With Microstructure And Properties, And Its Application To Additive Manufacturing., Anagh Deshpande

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Additive manufacturing or 3d printing is the process of constructing a 3-dimensional object layer-by-layer. This additive approach to manufacturing has enabled fabrication of complex components directly from a computer model (or a CAD model). The process has now matured from its earlier version of being a rapid prototyping tool to a technology that can fabricate service-ready components. Development of low-cost polymer additive manufacturing printers enabled by open source Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) printers and printers of other technologies like SLA and binder jetting has made polymer additive manufacturing accessible and affordable. But the metal additive manufacturing technologies are still expensive …

An Explainable Sequence-Based Deep Learning Predictor With Applications To Song Recommendation And Text Classification., Khalil Damak May 2019

An Explainable Sequence-Based Deep Learning Predictor With Applications To Song Recommendation And Text Classification., Khalil Damak

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Streaming applications are now the predominant tools for listening to music. What makes the success of such software is the availability of songs and especially their ability to provide users with relevant personalized recommendations. State of the art music recommender systems mainly rely on either Matrix factorization-based collaborative filtering approaches or deep learning architectures. Deep learning models usually use metadata for content-based filtering or predict the next user interaction (listening to a song) using a memory-based deep learning structure that learns from temporal sequences of user actions. Despite advances in deep learning models for song recommendation systems, none has taken …

Modeling And Counteracting Exposure Bias In Recommender Systems., Sami Khenissi May 2019

Modeling And Counteracting Exposure Bias In Recommender Systems., Sami Khenissi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Recommender systems are becoming widely used in everyday life. They use machine learning algorithms which learn to predict our preferences and thus influence our choices among a staggering array of options online, such as movies, books, products, and even news articles. Thus what we discover and see online, and consequently our opinions and decisions, are becoming increasingly affected by automated predictions made by learning machines. Similarly, the predictive accuracy of these learning machines heavily depends on the feedback data, such as ratings and clicks, that we provide them. This mutual influence can lead to closed-loop interactions that may cause unknown …

Plasma Oxidation Of Liquid Precursors For Complex Metal Oxides., Babajide Patrick Ajayi May 2019

Plasma Oxidation Of Liquid Precursors For Complex Metal Oxides., Babajide Patrick Ajayi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Clean energy production and storage are two of the most significant challenges in the 21st century currently limited by the discovery and development of new and advanced materials. Complex oxides and alloys made using earth-abundant elements will play a crucial role in technology development moving forward, however, current preparation techniques are limited by their inability to produce complex oxides and alloys with precise composition control at fast timescales. A concept was proposed to produce mixed metal oxides with composition control through the oxidation of liquid precursors via plasma oxidation. It was hypothesized that the oxidation process can be completed …

Investigation Of Flexural Behavior Of Steel Fiber Reinforced Concrete And Steel Fiber Orientation Control During Construction, Maria Kolisnichenko May 2019

Investigation Of Flexural Behavior Of Steel Fiber Reinforced Concrete And Steel Fiber Orientation Control During Construction, Maria Kolisnichenko

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Concrete is the most widely used construction material in the world, and its consumption has been increasing. The main benefits of concrete include its durability, availability of the components, and great strength in compression. Despite all these advantages, however, concrete is a brittle material with a relatively low tensile strength and deformation capacity. It is, therefore, vulnerable to cracking under tension, which can lead to sudden catastrophic failures of concrete structures. In order to control and reduce cracking, reinforcement of concrete is necessary.

The most commonly used reinforcement technique in structural application is the use of deformed steel bars. However, …

Capture And Release Gels For Optimized Storage (Cargos), Theodore S. Kalbfleisch Ii May 2019

Capture And Release Gels For Optimized Storage (Cargos), Theodore S. Kalbfleisch Ii

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Unassisted, the lifetime of many proteins outside their natural environment is very short. Scientists generally need to extract the sample, often in remote locations, and then transport, isolate, and store such biospecimens relatively far from the point of origin in order to study them. Currently, the most commonly used methods for storage of biospecimens are cryopreservation or refrigeration which, though effective, have their fair share of flaws. Cryopreservation and refrigeration-based storage of biospecimens requires a great deal of space and other resources to be effective. Furthermore, the hardware required for cold storage does not transport well. These factors make such …

Suture-Less Trocar Site Closure Clip, Hares A. Patel Apr 2019

Suture-Less Trocar Site Closure Clip, Hares A. Patel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: Following laparoscopic surgery, there is a need, in many cases, to close trocar sites to prevent hernias. Currently, devices that exist on the market are suture based, but the lack of standardization in the suturing techniques together with the time-consuming nature of the procedure leads to the need for improvement in trocar site closure products. Trocar closure sites do not need to be fully closed on the fascial layer; rather, sufficiently blocking the hole at the abdominal wall can significantly reduce post-operative herniation. A retrospective study on trocar site herniation (TSH) after laparoscopic surgery indicates a TSH incidence …

A Deep Learning Approach To Detect Diabetic Retinopathy In Fundus Images., Winston R. Furtado

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Background: Diabetic retinopathy is a disease caused due by complications of diabetes mellitus which can lead to blindness. About 33% of the US population with diabetes also show symptoms for diabetes retinopathy. If not treated, diabetic retinopathy worsens over time by progressing through two main pathological stages of non-proliferative and proliferative and four clinical stages. While the diagnostic accuracy of detecting diabetic retinopathy through machine learning have shown to be successful for OCT images, the accuracy of ultra-widefield fundus images have yet to be fully reported. This paper describes a method to non-invasively detect and diagnose diabetic retinopathy from ultra-widefield …
