In large enough quantities, heavy metals may be detrimental to human health. Metals in raw water may pass through a water treatment plant without being completely removed. Once in a the distribution system, the water may experience metal pick-up due to corrosion. During the course of this study, an attempt was made to determine the heavy metal concentrations in the University of Central Florida's potable water systems. Samples were fun on the plasma spectrophotometer, Spectraspan III, and analyzed for heavy metal content. The results indicate pick-up of Fe, Al, Cu, and Zn in the distribution system. Although the East Central Florida area is not heavily industrialized, its dependence on groundwater resources makes it especially vulnerable to contamination by poor waste disposal practices. The East Central Florida area was studied to discover the nature and disposal of hazardous wastes generated. It was found that a large portion of hazardous wastes in the region were from very small industries, distributors, and even consumers. Three of the most toxic and/or voluminous waste problems in the area--metal plating wastes, pesticide wastes, and hospital wastes--were studied to determine available alternatives for disposal and their costs.

Man-made mixing in shallow lakes will resuspend bottom sediments and increase phosphorus concentration in the water body. The increase in phosphorus content may affect the lake productivity. During the course of this study, a better understanding of the water-sediment-phosphorus relationships of some shallow lakes in Central Florida was attempted. Column studies and batch experiments were used to investigate the effect of mechanical mixing on the release of phosphorus from bottom sediments collected from Lake Claire and Jessup. The particle size distribution and density distribution of the bottom sediments were studied and the release of phosphorus from each fraction was measured. …

The pollutant transport from watershed to receiving waters is modeled for Spruce Creek basin. The data requirements for such a model are: daily rainfall; monthly lake evaporation; soil and land use breakdown; water quality history for the main indicators, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, suspended solids, and total organic carbon; surface flow and interflow delay coefficients; channel flow time; daily flow gage records; and channel flow characteristics. The model uses the SCS runoff curve number method to generate rainfall excess where the antecedent conditions are varied daily by a water budget analysis. The State of Florida has mandated that a statewide 911 system be implemented, and the Department of General Services, Division of Communications, has performed a study of possible 911 system configurations for Orange County based on the findings of a study performed by the Stanford Research Institute for the whole of the State of Florida. The Orange County study determined operator manning levels of the primary law enforcement agencies involved in the system and response times to citizen calls for each of the configurations proposed. Sediment resuspension due to the operation of recreational motorboats in shallow lakes was investigated. Boats equipped with 28, 50, 85, 120, and 165 horsepower engines were used for this study on Lake Claire, Florida Technological University campus, and Lake Mizell, the City of Winter Park, located in Orange County, Central Florida. Grasshopper Lake was also a test site due to its clarity for underwater photography. These motorboats were run at different speeds and water depths and the induced pressure waves on the lake bottom were measured using a hydrophone and recording system. For this report, four municipal services provided by the City of Lakeland were studied. The environmental impact of these services was discussed. Recommendations were made for solutions to problems found. It was found that the water supply services has on deleterious impact on the environment. Hydrogen sulfide occasionally found in the water supply gives the latter objectionable odor and taste. Installation of a centralized water treatment plant with aeration facilities for hydrogen sulfide removal was recommended for resolution of the problem. The waste water treatment plant removes 91% of the BOD5 and the suspended solids in the plant influent. The …

This is a broad study of stormwater infiltration and inflow effects on two sewer systems with an equivalent size for comparison in Brevard County, Florida. The systems are Rockledge, which is located on the highest ground in the area, and Cocoa Beach, which is located down in the local water table. Rainfall data, sewage flow, quality, and flow rates were collected from the Brevard Public Health Department, Cocoa Beach and Rockledge sewage Plants, weather stations, and the Cocoa Water plant. The Seminole County, Florida solid waste transportation network was examined to determine alternate locations of transfer stations. The scope of this study is limited to transportation and assumed disposal costs. Collection costs are not included. Review of past generation records was conducted and a per capita generation rate of 4 lbs/day was determined. This compared favorably to a 4.06 lbs/day for Orange and Brevard County. The cost per ton for the present solid waste management system was computed and compared to alternative systems. Several Florida lakes with different documented trophic state indices were selected for sediment analysis. Vertical sections of the sediment were taken at depths of .1, .5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10 and l5 centimeters below the surface of the sediment-water interface. Total Phosphorus analysis was done on each section. The profile presented was then evaluated and was found that the profiles best fit the equation Y = X/ (A + BX), where Y is the Phosphorus Concentration in ppm and X is the sediment depth in cm. Correlation between the trophic state and the profiles characteristics are presented. …

The mass loadings of pollutants common in surface waters result from the discharges of many different sources. In the last few years it has been noted that nonpoint sources contribute more pollutants than point sources. This is because in many cases the point source discharges have been, by law, reduced drastically. In the State of Florida many water quality parameters were examined to estimate the mass loadings in streams related to, drainage area, average flow, land use, soil type and management practices. Stormwater management necessitates a regional plan based on the best practical methods. "Storm", a mathematical model, is employed to simulate runoff conditions in the Shingle Creek Basin. The computed runoff quantity is calibrated directly with the streams hydrograph. Runoff quality is predicted with two sets of pollutant loading rates. The scope of the model is expanded by development of parametric curves that can be used to convert measured quality data to input land use loadings. A parametric study is also performed to fabricate the effects of urbanization on the Shingle Creek Basin.

This is a brief investigation of stormwater runoff from a large shopping center located in Brevard County, Florida. Merritt Square Shopping Center has a parking area for 4,700 automobiles and is located on the shore of Newfound Harbor which is classified as recreation waters (Class III). A literature survey of runoff studies in other areas has been made for both "state of the art" and evaluation of findings. Water samples were initially collected from five locations. The history of solid waste management in Lake County, Florida is reviewed. The role of governmental agencies is mentioned. Local environmental characteristics and transportation systems are discussed. Existing collection and disposal practices are presented. A land use analysis of the unincorporated areas of the County is given. Projections of population and solid waste quantities are listed. Two computer models are presented. Their optimum solutions are analyzed in detail. The cost associated with implementing either plan is presented. A recommended plan is given based on a combination of transfer stations and sanitary landfills.

This report is intended to examine the ecological changes due to mixing in shallow water bodies. Physical, chemical, and biological changes are reported in literature. A literature search revealed the range of mixing nodes or processes. Assessment of ecological changes due to mixing by boating activities had been evaluated in a research project supported by the environmental Protection Agency and conducted at Florida Technological University. The examination of changes due to mechanical mixing on lake ecology simulated in fifty-five gallon drums indicated the sensitivity of such parameters as total Kjeldahl nitrogen, conductivity, pH, temperature, and dissolved oxygen. The USPHS limits color in water to 15 color units. However, it is desirable to remove all the color. Color in surface water is mainly due to humic substances and was found in concentrations varying up to 450 color units. Concrete block single-story detached homes are popular residences in Florida, but construction materials and methods must undergo changes to combat rising prices and material shortages. Those systems with the greatest pressure of price or material shortage will change first. When current costs and methods are examine, it is found that two systems, roof and exterior walls, have the greatest need for changes in the immediate future; and one system, thermal insulation, needs an empirical study. This is a research report that discusses some continuous and discrete modeling techniques. The report applies these techniques to the analysis of Canal 38 (Kissimmee River) part of Central and South Florida Flood Control District. The analysis is based on recorded data for defining the physical systems parameters. Established parameters are mathematically related to define a descriptive model for Canal 38. The modeling procedure of 'trial and error' is used to assemble the model with measures of merit, the integral square error, and root mean squared error. General simulation considerations are discussed for application of the mathematical model.
