Assessing Change In Runoff Water Parameters Through Road Shoulder Vegetated Filter Strips: Experimental Comparison Of Soils And Engineered Infiltration Media, Andrew Corrado, Mohammad Shokri

The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal

Placement of Vegetated Filter Strips (VFS) along roadways may facilitate removal of nutrients from stormwater runoff. The objective of this research is to compare water quality performance of a VFS containing engineered media to that of typical Florida sandy soil. Storms of variable intensity were simulated over two 1:1 scale physical models of typical one- and two-lane roadway shoulders, one with engineered media (treatment), and one without (control). Simulated roadway runoff was introduced as sheet flow from the roadway and precipitation was applied with a rainfall simulator. Samples of runoff and infiltrate were tested for Dissolved Oxygen (DO) concentration and …

Mimicking Blood Rheology For More Accurate Modeling In Benchtop Research, Lindsey Webb Aug 2020

Mimicking Blood Rheology For More Accurate Modeling In Benchtop Research, Lindsey Webb

The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal

Because blood is challenging to use as a working fluid in a laboratory setting due to health and safety concerns, a blood analogue would be useful to perform benchtop experiments. Viscosity is an important fluid property for modeling and experiments, especially because blood is a shear thinning fluid; therefore, it has a decreasing viscosity with higher shear rates. This project seeks to create a blood-mimicking fluid for benchtop laboratory use. Numerous fluids with different combinations of water, glycerin, salt, and xanthan gum (XG) were created to mimic blood viscosity at different hematocrit levels. Four additional solutions were also created from …

Energy Consumption And Routing Model For First Responder Vehicles, Alex Rodriguez Mar 2019

Energy Consumption And Routing Model For First Responder Vehicles, Alex Rodriguez

The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal

The ongoing research and prototyping of electric vehicles (EVs) offers numerous opportunities to investigate their performance in various service contexts. As EVs are integrated into society, the reliable prediction of fuel consumption and routing time becomes particularly important in emergency response services. This project develops a preliminary stochastic model that can route and predict the energy consumption and travel time for hypothetical emergency vehicles operating on an electric battery cell. Using a Monte-Carlo framework, we constructed a routing model designed to minimize travel time and resource consumption under various simulated conditions. In doing so, we establish the foundation for balancing …

Mechanisims Of Vortex Oscillation In A Fluidic Flow Meter, Mohammed Al-Muqbel, Peshala Gamage Mar 2019

Mechanisims Of Vortex Oscillation In A Fluidic Flow Meter, Mohammed Al-Muqbel, Peshala Gamage

The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal

Flow meters are devices capable of measuring the amount of fluid transported through piping networks. Example applications include accurate measurements of flow in chemical processing plants and fluid consumption by end-users (e.g. water, fuel, natural gas, etc.) by customers, which is a core issue in fluid-handling engineering. Some flow meters contain no moving parts (Royle and Boucher 1972), which is desirable since moving parts wear over time, leading to compromised meter accuracy. The meter investigated in this study contains no moving parts, and its operation relies on oscillations induced by the fluid flow through the meter. In this project, the …

Design Improvements And Construction Of An Electric Fish Finder, Jeffrey C. Lambert Jan 2018

Design Improvements And Construction Of An Electric Fish Finder, Jeffrey C. Lambert

The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal

We provide notes on the design and construction of an 'Electric Fish Finder – a self contained, portable bioamplifier for the detection and monitoring of the electric organ discharges generated by electric fish. Here we describe several improvements on a previous design, including: improved performance in waters of extremely low conductivity, extended battery life, and better waterproofing.
