An atomic force microscope (AFM) was used to measure the steric forces of lipopolysaccharides (LPS) on the biofilm-forming bacteria, Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It is well known that LPS play a vital role in biofilm formation. These forces were characterized with a modified version of the Alexander and de Gennes (AdG) model for polymers, which is a function of equilibrium brush length, L, probe radius, R, temperature, T, separation distance, D, and an indefinite density variable, s. This last parameter was originally distinguished by de Gennes as the root spacing or mesh spacing depending upon the type of polymer adhesion; however since …

Enhanced access and continuity are key components of patient-centered care. Existing studies show that several interventions such as providing same day appointments, walk-in services, after-hours care, and group appointments, have been used to redesign the healthcare systems for improved access to primary care. However, an intervention focusing on a single component of care delivery (i.e. improving access to acute care) might have a negative impact other components of the system (i.e. reduced continuity of care for chronic patients). Therefore, primary care clinics should consider implementing multiple interventions tailored for their patient population needs. We collected rapid ethnography and observations to …

A Short History Of Uranium, Fathi Habashi Jul 2015

A Short History Of Uranium, Fathi Habashi

Fathi Habashi

Uranium was discovered in 1781 by Klaproth, a pharmacist in Berlin, from the black mineral pitchblende found in Joachimsthal silver mines. Peligot in France in 1841 proved that what Klaproth isolated from pichblende was uranium oxide and not the metal. Uranium salts were used at that time to manufacture coloured glass before the discovery of its radioactivity in 1896. It became in great demand when its decay product radium was found to cure cancer. The discovery if uranium fission in 1939 was the reason for the manufacture of the first atomic bomb.

Richard A. Malthaner

An integrated system for minimally invasive robot-assisted image-guided lung brachytherapy has been developed. The system incorporates an experimental setup for accurate radioactive seed placement with commercially available dosimetry planning software. The end result is a complete system that allows planning and executing a brachytherapy procedure with increased accuracy. The results of the in vitro seed placement evaluation show that seed misplacement has a significant effect on the volume receiving more than 200% of the dose (V200), and the minimum dosage received by 90% of the volume (D90).

Dr. Francis Loth

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) dynamics in the spinal subarachnoid space (SSS) have been thought to play an important pathophysiological role in syringomyelia, Chiari I malformation (CM), and a role in intrathecal drug delivery. Yet, the impact that fine anatomical structures, including nerve roots and denticulate ligaments (NRDL), have on SSS CSF dynamics is not clear. In the present study we assessed the impact of NRDL on CSF dynamics in the cervical SSS. The 3D geometry of the cervical SSS was reconstructed based on manual segmentation of MRI images of a healthy volunteer and a patient with CM. Idealized NRDL were designed …

Segmentation Of Pulmonary Nodules In Computed Tomography Using A Regression Neural Network Approach And Its Application To The Lung Image Database Consortium And Image Database Resource Initiative Dataset, Temesguen Messay, Russell C. Hardie, Timothy R. Tuinstra Mar 2015

Tuinstra

Russell C. Hardie

We present new pulmonary nodule segmentation algorithms for computed tomography (CT). These include a fully-automated (FA) system, a semi-automated (SA) system, and a hybrid system. Like most traditional systems, the new FA system requires only a single user-supplied cue point. On the other hand, the SA system represents a new algorithm class requiring 8 user-supplied control points. This does increase the burden on the user, but we show that the resulting system is highly robust and can handle a variety of challenging cases. The proposed hybrid system starts with the FA system. If improved segmentation results are needed, the SA …

Elastic, Viscous, And Mass Load Effects On Poststroke Muscle Recruitment And Co-Contraction During Reaching: A Pilot Study, Tina M. Stoeckmann, Katherine J. Sullivan, Robert A. Scheidt

Robert Scheidt

Background: Resistive exercise after stroke can improve strength (force-generating capacity) without increasing spasticity (velocity-dependent hypertonicity). However, the effect of resistive load type on muscle activation and co-contraction after stroke is not clear. Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of load type (elastic, viscous, or mass) on muscle activation and co-contraction during resisted forward reaching in the paretic and nonparetic arms after stroke. Design: This investigation was a single-session, mixed repeated-measures pilot study. Methods: Twenty participants (10 with hemiplegia and 10 without neurologic involvement) reached forward with each arm against equivalent elastic, viscous, and mass loads. …

Computational Multimedia For Video Self Modeling, Ju Shen Feb 2015

Computational Multimedia For Video Self Modeling, Ju Shen

Ju Shen

Video self modeling (VSM) is a behavioral intervention technique in which a learner models a target behavior by watching a video of oneself. This is the idea behind the psychological theory of self-efficacy - you can learn or model to perform certain tasks because you see yourself doing it, which provides the most ideal form of behavior modeling. The effectiveness of VSM has been demonstrated for many different types of disabilities and behavioral problems ranging from stuttering, inappropriate social behaviors, autism, selective mutism to sports training. However, there is an inherent difficulty associated with the production of VSM material. Prolonged …
