The study of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) can be used as a model to understand neuro-biological mechanisms of behavior. Neuropharmacological and neuroanatomical studies of children with ADHD can be used to stimulate interest in these fields incorporating both clinical and basic issues. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the use of a multi-media computer application (Hyperstudio) in the presentation of complex neurobiological material using ADHD as a clinical example. The growing availability of computers and multi-media software in educational settings can enhance lectures and increase the opportunity for interactive study by students. The purpose of this paper …

An Analysis Of Requirements For Specifying Manufacturing Engineering And Business Processes, Steven Ray, Amy Knutilla, Craig Schlenoff
An Analysis Of Requirements For Specifying Manufacturing Engineering And Business Processes, Steven Ray, Amy Knutilla, Craig Schlenoff
Steven R Ray
A wide range of manufacturing software applications deal with the manipulation and expression of collections of activities. Examples include manufacturing process planning, production scheduling, simulation, project management, workflow, business process reengineering, and product realization process modeling. While each of these applications serves a specific audience and need and focuses on particular aspects of a process, much could be gained by sharing process information among applications. One of the primary obstacles to such integration is the lack of any common representation of what is really the underlying concept of process. The objective of the work described here is to investigate the …

Sediment Control At Water Intakes Along Sand Bed Rivers, Fred L. Ogden
Sediment Control At Water Intakes Along Sand Bed Rivers, Fred L. Ogden
Fred L. Ogden
Results from five physical hydraulic model studies of riverside water intakes situated along the Missouri River reach between Sioux City, Iowa, and St. Louis, Missouri, are presented. Movable-bed, undistorted Froude-scale models are used to determine the effectiveness of structural modifications in the vicinity of the intake to limit the influx of bed-load sediments. Solutions developed in each case include a series of submerged flow-turning vanes located on the riverward side of the intake. A sediment-barrier wall between the vanes and intake ...
Various Noise Sources And Noise Reduction Techniques In Instrumentation, Raman K. Attri
Various Noise Sources And Noise Reduction Techniques In Instrumentation, Raman K. Attri
Raman K. Attri
Noise is the biggest environmental factor, which determines if a system will operate reliably in practice. Noise can be random or repetitive, occurring continuously or in isolated burst. It may affect current or voltage and may occur at any frequency from DC to very high frequencies. A particular source may generate noise over narrow or wide band of frequencies. Some time the effect of noise on the system performance can be very drastic.

A new technique has been developed to probe the viscoelastic and anelastic properties of submicron phases of inhomogeneous materials. The measurement gives information related to the internal friction and to the variations of the dynamic modulus of nanometer-sized volumes. It is then the nanoscale equivalent to mechanical spectroscopy, a well-known macroscopic technique for materials studies, also sometimes called dynamic mechanical (thermal) analysis. The technique is based on a scanning force microscope, using the principle of scanning local-acceleration microscopy (SLAM), and allows the sample temperature to be changed. It is called variable-temperature SLAM, abbreviated T-SLAM. According to a recent proposition to …

Friction Anisotropy And Asymmetry Of A Compliant Monolayer Induced By A Small Molecular Tilt, Nancy Burnham, M Liley, D. Gourdon, Dimitrios Stamou, U Meseth, T Fischer, C Lautz, H Stahlberg, H Vogel, C Duschl

Lateral force microscopy in the wearless regime was used to study the friction behavior of a lipid monolayer on mica. In the monolayer, condensed domains with long-range orientational order of the lipid molecules were present. The domains revealed unexpectedly strong friction anisotropies and non-negligible friction asymmetries. The angular dependency of these effects correlated well with the tilt direction of the alkyl chains of the monolayer, as determined by electron diffraction and Brewster angle microscopy. The molecular tilt causing these frictional effects was less than 15 degrees, demonstrating that even small molecular tilts can make a major contribution to friction.

Process Specification Language: An Analysis Of Existing Representations, Amy Knutilla, Stephen Polyak, Craig Schlenoff, Shu Cheah, Steven Ray, Richard Anderson
Steven R Ray
The goal of the NIST Process Specification Language (PSL) project is to investigate and arrive at a neutral, unifying representation of process information to enable sharing of process data among manufacturing engineering and business applications. This paper focuses on the second phase of the project, the analysis of existing process representations to determine how well existing process representation methodologies support the requirements for specifying processes found in Phase One. This analysis will provide an objective basis from which to develop a comprehensive language and will promote the leveraging of existing work.
Irreversibility Distribution For A Pure Convection Case Of The Smith-Hutton Problem, Yasar Demirel
Irreversibility Distribution For A Pure Convection Case Of The Smith-Hutton Problem, Yasar Demirel
YASAR DEMIREL
The irreversibility distributions for a pure convection heat transfer case of the Smith- Hutton problem have been calculated and displayed graphically. The steady state, twodimensional test problem of Smith-HuRon involves steep variations in temperature and strong streamline curvature in a rectangular flow domain that are encountered in many practical convection-diffusion problems. Combination of the first and second laws of thermodynamics has been utilized to calculate the irreversibility distribution ratio and the Bejan number with various degrees of steepness parameter in the temperature field. The shapes of the temperature and velocity profiles are the ones that maximize or minimize the total …

Numerical Analysis Of Convection Heat Transfer In A Rectangular Packed Duct Withasymmetric Heating, Yasar Demirel, Y. Makkawi, H.H. Ali
YASAR DEMIREL
Fully developed, forced convection heat transfer in a rectangular packed duct is analyzed numerically based on a two-dimensional model incorporating the effects of Raschig ring packing on the Ergun equation. The boundary conditions are based on asymmetric heating with only the top wall supplied with a constant heat flux, while the other walls are adiabatic. The numerical predictions are compared with measured temperature profiles and local Nusselt numbers obtained from a large scale packed duct with L/H = 16 and W/H = 8, using Raschig rings of 4.8 cm in size. The prediction represents the experimental data satisfactorily. The volumetric …
