New Approaches For Memristive Logic Computations, Muayad Jaafar Aljafar
New Approaches For Memristive Logic Computations, Muayad Jaafar Aljafar
Dissertations and Theses
Over the past five decades, exponential advances in device integration in microelectronics for memory and computation applications have been observed. These advances are closely related to miniaturization in integrated circuit technologies. However, this miniaturization is reaching the physical limit (i.e., the end of Moore's Law). This miniaturization is also causing a dramatic problem of heat dissipation in integrated circuits. Additionally, approaching the physical limit of semiconductor devices in fabrication process increases the delay of moving data between computing and memory units hence decreasing the performance. The market requirements for faster computers with lower power consumption can be addressed by new …
Wind Energy And Wind-Energy-Inspired Turbulent Wakes: Modulation Of Structures, Mechanisms And Flow Regimes, Elizabeth H. Camp
Wind Energy And Wind-Energy-Inspired Turbulent Wakes: Modulation Of Structures, Mechanisms And Flow Regimes, Elizabeth H. Camp
Dissertations and Theses
The interaction of turbulent wakes with one another and with the adjacent fluid directly impacts the generation of electricity in wind turbine arrays. Computational modeling is well suited to the repeated iterations of data generation that may be required to inform understanding of the function of wind farms as well as to develop control schemes for plant function. In order to perform such computational studies, a simplified model of the turbine must be implemented. One of the most computationally efficient parametrizations of the blade utilizes a stationary disk which has a prescribed drag and produces a wake. However, since accurate …

Evaluating The Applicability Of Modflow2005 Plus Mt3d-Usgs: Borden Case Study, Linley Mescher
Civil and Environmental Engineering Master's Project Reports
Groundwater is essential to communities around the world for drinking, industrial, and agricultural purposes. MODFLOW is a modeling program that uses the three-dimensional continuity equation in a finite difference approach to simulate groundwater flow in an aquifer. MT3D-USGS is a MODFLOW package that simulates contaminant transport. This study used MODFLOW2005 with MT3D-USGS to build a model simulating contaminant transport in Borden, Ontario. A study conducted at the Borden site in 1982 injected a solution of eight solutes to test the transport of contaminants over three years. Initial simulations showed similar transport characteristics for chloride and carbon tetrachloride as compared to …
Power Spectrum Prediction Of Amplified Dual-Band Lte-Advanced Signals, Xianzhen Yang
Power Spectrum Prediction Of Amplified Dual-Band Lte-Advanced Signals, Xianzhen Yang
Dissertations and Theses
In wireless communication, the nonlinearity of a radio frequency (RF) power amplifier is an important issue for power amplifier designers. Since the nonlinearity is generated by the properties of physical components, it is hard to avoid it in producing power amplifiers. Power amplifier designers should know about the nonlinearity in order to compensate for it.
A two-tone test is a relatively widely used method to measure the nonlinearity of a power amplifier, which means the third order intercept point (IP3) can be measured from the two-tone test. Through the two-tone test, researchers have proposed some formulae to present what the …

The Tigris River is one of two primary rivers in Iraq and is, along with the Euphrates, the main source for drinking and irrigation water in the country. The Tigris River originates in the Taurus Mountains in Turkey, and is 1850 km long. The majority of the river lies within Iraq. The river passes through, and is the primary drinking water source for major cities such as Mosul, Baeji, Samarra, Baghdad (the capital), and Kut. The Tigris River joins the Euphrates River in Qurna city within Basra province to form the Shatt Al-Arab River which eventually discharges into the Persian …
Relationship Between Anisotropy And Dispersive Stress In Wind Plants With Variable Spacing, Tamara S. Dib
Relationship Between Anisotropy And Dispersive Stress In Wind Plants With Variable Spacing, Tamara S. Dib
Dissertations and Theses
Large eddy simulations are considered for wind plants with varied spanwise and streamwise spacing. Data from five different configurations of staggered and aligned LES wind turbine arrays with a neutrally stratified atmospheric boundary layer are employed for analysis. Fields are analyzed by evaluating the anisotropy stress invariants based on the Reynolds shear stresses and dispersive stress tensor. The relationship between quantities are drawn as a function of the wind plant packing. Reynolds stresses and dispersive stresses are investigated alongside a domain altered version of the second and third scalar invariants, ξ, η, as well as the combination of the …
Development Of A Liquid Contacting Method For Investigating Photovoltaic Properties Of Pbs Quantum Dot Solids, Vitalii Alekseevich Dereviankin
Development Of A Liquid Contacting Method For Investigating Photovoltaic Properties Of Pbs Quantum Dot Solids, Vitalii Alekseevich Dereviankin
Dissertations and Theses
Photovoltaic (PV) devices based on PbS quantum dot (QD) solids demonstrate high photon-to-electron conversion yields. However, record power conversion efficiencies remain limited mainly due to bulk and interfacial defects in the light absorbing material (QD solids). Interfacial defects can be formed when a semiconductor, such as QD solid, is contacted by another material and may predetermine the semiconductor/metal or semiconductor/metal-oxide junction properties. The objective of the work described in this dissertation was set to explore whether electrochemical contacting using liquid electrolytes can provide sufficient means of contacting the QD solids to investigate their PV performance without introducing the unwanted interfacial …
Hierarchical Random Boolean Network Reservoirs, Sai Kiran Cherupally
Hierarchical Random Boolean Network Reservoirs, Sai Kiran Cherupally
Dissertations and Theses
Reservoir Computing (RC) is an emerging Machine Learning (ML) paradigm. RC systems contain randomly assembled computing devices and can be trained to solve complex temporal tasks. These systems are computationally cheaper to train than other ML paradigms such as recurrent neural networks, and they can also be trained to solve multiple tasks simultaneously. Further, hierarchical RC systems with fixed topologies, were shown to outperform monolithic RC systems by up to 40% when solving temporal tasks. Although the performance of monolithic RC networks was shown to improve with increasing network size, building large monolithic networks may be challenging, for example because …

Silicon Compilation And Test For Dataflow Implementations In Gasp And Click, Swetha Mettala Gilla
Dissertations and Theses
Many modern computer systems are distributed over space. Well-known examples are the Internet of Things and IBM's TrueNorth for deep learning applications. At the Asynchronous Research Center (ARC) at Portland State University we build distributed hardware systems using self-timed computation and delay-insensitive communication. Where appropriate, self-timed hardware operations can reduce average and peak power, energy, latency, and electromagnetic interference. Alternatively, self-timed operations can increase throughput, tolerance to delay variations, scalability, and manufacturability.
The design of complex hardware systems requires design automation and support for test, debug, and product characterization.
This thesis focuses on design compilation and test support for dataflow …
Stress Analysis Of Embedded Devices Under Thermal Cycling, Sadhana Radhakrishnan
Stress Analysis Of Embedded Devices Under Thermal Cycling, Sadhana Radhakrishnan
Dissertations and Theses
Embedded active and passive devices has been increasingly used by in order to integrate more functions inside the same or smaller size device and to meet the need for better electrical performance of the component assemblies.
Solder joints have been used in the electronic industry as both structural and electrical interconnections between electronic packages and printed circuit boards (PCB). When solder joints are under thermal cyclic loading, mismatch in coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE) between the printed circuit boards and the solder balls creates thermal strains and stresses on the joints, which may finally result in cracking. Consequently, the mechanical …
Development Of A Design Guideline For Bridge Pile Foundations Subjected To Liquefaction Induced Lateral Spreading, Jonathan A. Nasr
Development Of A Design Guideline For Bridge Pile Foundations Subjected To Liquefaction Induced Lateral Spreading, Jonathan A. Nasr
Dissertations and Theses
Effective-stress nonlinear dynamic analyses (NDA) were performed for piles in liquefiable sloped ground to assess how inertia and liquefaction-induced lateral spreading combine in long-duration vs. short-duration earthquakes. A parametric study was performed using input motions from subduction and crustal earthquakes covering a wide range of earthquake durations. The NDA results were used to evaluate the accuracy of the equivalent static analysis (ESA) recommended by Caltrans/ODOT for estimating pile demands. Finally, the NDA results were used to develop new ESA methods to combine inertial and lateral spreading loads for estimating elastic and inelastic pile demands.
The NDA results showed that pile …
Mechanisms And Identification Of Unsteady Separation Development And Remediation, Matthew Scott Melius
Mechanisms And Identification Of Unsteady Separation Development And Remediation, Matthew Scott Melius
Dissertations and Theses
Unsteady flow separation represents a highly complex and important area of study within fluid mechanics. The extent of separation and specific time scales over which it occurs are not fully understood and has significant consequences in numerous industrial applications such as helicopters, jet engines, hydroelectric turbines and wind turbines. A direct consequence of unsteady separation is the erratic movement of the separation point which causes highly dynamic and unpredictable loads on an airfoil. Current computational models underestimate the aerodynamic loads due to the inaccurate prediction of the emergence and severity of unsteady flow separation especially in response to a sudden …

Exploring High-Resolution Data Obtained From Asc/3 Controller Of Intersection Se Division St & Se 122nd Ave, Portland, Oregon, Naowar Al-Abbas
Civil and Environmental Engineering Master's Project Reports
High-resolution data obtained from ASC/3 controllers can be used to create a variety of performance measures, helping engineers and professionals in monitoring intersection performance, identifying issues, and making proper improvements. These measures concern the intersection quality of the progression, capacity, and non-vehicular operations (e.g. pedestrian crossings). In this report, we explored high-resolution data obtained from the intersection of SE Division Street and 122nd Avenue. This intersection had some safety concerns as it is considered one of most dangerous intersections in Portland, Oregon. Thus, the first variable we examined from the data was pedestrian wait time when a cross request is …
Mechanisms Controlling Copper Transport In Natural Soils, Julie A. Luisi
Mechanisms Controlling Copper Transport In Natural Soils, Julie A. Luisi
Civil and Environmental Engineering Master's Project Reports
Biosolids are used as amendments to agricultural soils and can be a source of trace metals. It is unknown if these land-applied trace metals travel through the soil column to the water table. This study aims to determine the transport behavior of copper in natural soils, including 'aged' soils, commercial agricultural soils that have had multiple years of biosolids applications. Using acid digests and Darcy column apparatus it was determined that factors such as pH, soil composition, especially organic matter content, and the presence of other trace metals influence copper’s complex transport behavior in these soils. Natural soil appears to …
