Load And Resistance Factor Design Of Cold-Formed Stainless Steel Statistical Analysis Of Material Properties And Development Of The Lrfd Provisions, Shin-Hua Lin, Wei-Wen Yu, Theodore V. Galambos

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

INTRODUCTION 1.1 General Remarks The "Allowable Stress Design" method has long been used for the design of steel structures in the United States. 1,2,3 Recently, the probability-based load and resistance factor design (LRFD) criteria have been successfully applied to the structural design of hot-rolled steel shapes and built-up members. 4,5,6 The AISI LRFD Specification is being developed as well for the design of structural members cold-formed from carbon and low alloy steels. 7-17 These design criteria can provide a more uniform degree of structural safety to achieve consistent reliability for different design situations. The probability-based design method is developed on …

Estimation Of X-Band Scattering Properties Of Tree Components, David E. Pitts, Gautam D. Badhwar, Eddie Reyna, R. Zoughi, Linkim Wu, Richard K. Moore Sep 1988

Estimation Of X-Band Scattering Properties Of Tree Components, David E. Pitts, Gautam D. Badhwar, Eddie Reyna, R. Zoughi, Linkim Wu, Richard K. Moore

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An X-band FM-CW very fine range resolution scatterometer was used to acquire backscattering data for individual branches for a number of tree species. Using a model to describe the scattering source function, dσ/dR = f(η, κ), and an experimental procedure for selected removal of plant parts, allows the estimation of η, the volume backscatter coefficient, and κ, the volume extinction coefficient. It is found that 1) leaves are strong attenuators as well as scatterers, 2) the albedo, ω = η/κ, at a given angle of incidence, is nearly independent of the tree type, 3) the tree …

Measurements Of Radar Backscatter From An Artificial Tree An Indication Of Azimuthal Variations And Polarisation Sensitivity Of Trees, Richard K. Moore, M. S. Osman, R. Zoughi Sep 1988

Measurements Of Radar Backscatter From An Artificial Tree An Indication Of Azimuthal Variations And Polarisation Sensitivity Of Trees, Richard K. Moore, M. S. Osman, R. Zoughi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Measurements of radar backscatter from an artificial tree were made in the laboratory at 6 and 10 GHz at horizontal incidence. The system has resolution cylinder 18 cm in diameter and 11 cm long. The tree itself was only 30.5 cm high so about half the tree was within the beam. The scattering was azimuthally uniform. Tilted polarizations gave results favoring an angle corresponding with that of the branches. Measurements were made with and without leaves.

Anomalous Temperature Dependence Of The Electric Field Gradient At The Y Site In In₀.₁Y₀.₉Ba₂Cu₃O9- Δ, Gary L. Catchen, Michael Blaszkiewicz, Anthony Baratta, Wayne Huebner Aug 1988

Anomalous Temperature Dependence Of The Electric Field Gradient At The Y Site In In₀.₁Y₀.₉Ba₂Cu₃O9- Δ, Gary L. Catchen, Michael Blaszkiewicz, Anthony Baratta, Wayne Huebner

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Perturbed angular correlation (PAC) spectroscopy has been used to measure a well-defined static electric quadrupole interaction in a superconducting ceramic, In0.1Y0.9Ba2Cu3O9-δ. Perturbation functions, Fourier transforms, and the derived PAC parameters are given for data taken at temperatures ranging from 77 to 1070 K. Indirect evidence is presented for the occupation of the Y site by the 111In-111Cd PAC probe. The derived electric field gradients were found to increase linearly with temperature. This result suggests the presence of soft, anisotropic vibrations in the structure. Additional evidence is presented …

Mechanical Stemming Construction For Blast Holes And Method Of Use, Paul Nicholas Worsey Jul 1988

Mechanical Stemming Construction For Blast Holes And Method Of Use, Paul Nicholas Worsey

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A stemming construction for a blast hole loaded with an explosive charge, comprising a tapering wedge member dispersed in the blast hole outwardly of the explosive charge with its narrower end facing outwardly toward the mouth of the blast hole, and particulate stemming material in the blast hole outwardly of the wedge member. Detonation of the explosive drives the wedge member into the stemming material to wedge the stemming material against the walls of the blast hole. The wedge member is preferably cone-shaped and can be provided with a stabilizing rod to prevent it from tilting.

A General Correction For Spontaneous Potential Well Logs In Fresh Water, Cary L. Mcconnell Jun 1988

A General Correction For Spontaneous Potential Well Logs In Fresh Water, Cary L. Mcconnell

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A generalized empirical relationship was found which corrects spontaneous potential (SP) readings from well logs run in freshwater wells. The function was found by correlating measured and calculated spontaneous potentials. The calculated values are based on actual measured ionic content of groundwaters and are fully corrected for environmental effects and ion species. Without the empirical relationship the electrically equivalent to an NaCl solution resistivity, Rwe, is generally too low for fresh waters when computed with existing commercially available functions. The low Rwe makes the water appear saltier than it really is. One hundred sixty-two (162) individual formations from one hundred …

A Low Rise Hospital Development On Restored Opencast Fill, W. M. Kilkenny Jun 1988

A Low Rise Hospital Development On Restored Opencast Fill, W. M. Kilkenny

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

An extensive low-rise hospital development has taken place since 1982 on a former opencast coal mining site 30 years after working and restoration. The clay and shale fill some 20 metres deep was placed without systematic compaction. Five separate site investigations have been carried out at different times during the last 20 years and a detailed engineering geological mapping exercise was completed in 1977. Drainage works and the main buildings in Scheme 1 and 2 have been monitored during and after construction. Significant settlements have occurred requiring some remedial work. A surcharge and inundation trial has been undertaken prior to …

A Modified Field Infiltrometer Test For Clay Liners, G. S. Laird, W. B. Lozier, A. M. Gurevich Jun 1988

A Modified Field Infiltrometer Test For Clay Liners, G. S. Laird, W. B. Lozier, A. M. Gurevich

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Regulatory agencies are looking more frequently to in situ field hydraulic conductivity tests for the assessment of a liner's compliance to a specified hydraulic conductivity. Most field tests have evaluated hydraulic conductivity by measuring the infiltration rate of the liner. The infiltration rate can be used to arrive at a hydraulic conductivity value if the hydraulic boundary conditions of the test can be identified or if the head loss at different depths can be measured. A test fill of a clay liner was evaluated for its saturated vertical hydraulic conductivity. This paper discusses the use of eight tensiometers to measure …
