Computational Intelligent Impact Force Modeling And Monitoring In Hislo Conditions For Maximizing Surface Mining Efficiency, Safety, And Health, Danish Ali Jan 2021

Computational Intelligent Impact Force Modeling And Monitoring In Hislo Conditions For Maximizing Surface Mining Efficiency, Safety, And Health, Danish Ali

Doctoral Dissertations

"Shovel-truck systems are the most widely employed excavation and material handling systems for surface mining operations. During this process, a high-impact shovel loading operation (HISLO) produces large forces that cause extreme whole body vibrations (WBV) that can severely affect the safety and health of haul truck operators. Previously developed solutions have failed to produce satisfactory results as the vibrations at the truck operator seat still exceed the “Extremely Uncomfortable Limits”. This study was a novel effort in developing deep learning-based solution to the HISLO problem.

This research study developed a rigorous mathematical model and a 3D virtual simulation model to …

Build Strategy Investigation Of Ti-6al-4v Produced Via A Hybrid Additive Manufacturing Process, Lei Yan Jan 2019

Build Strategy Investigation Of Ti-6al-4v Produced Via A Hybrid Additive Manufacturing Process, Lei Yan

Doctoral Dissertations

“Till now, laser metal deposition (LMD) has been developed with the capability of near-net shape high-performance metal parts fabrication, especially complicated titanium alloys, nickel alloys, and aluminum alloys. However, LMD processed parts usually do not meet end-use requirements without post treatments. In-process part quality inspection and inner features machining are impossible within a single LMD process. Hybrid additive manufacturing (HAM), which integrates additive and subtractive manufacturing in one process, has been proposed to increase the feasibility of complex parts fabrication. This dissertation aims to improve the applications of Ti-6Al-4V parts fabricated via a HAM technique. The first research topic is …

Modeling And Evaluation Of Moisture Diffusion In Polymer Composite Materials, Zhen Huo Jan 2016

Modeling And Evaluation Of Moisture Diffusion In Polymer Composite Materials, Zhen Huo

Doctoral Dissertations

"Fiber-reinforced polymer composites have extensive applications due to their high specific strength, improved product performance, low maintenance and design flexibility. However, moisture absorbed by polymer composites during the service life plays a detrimental role in both the integrity and durability of composite structure. It is essential to understand the moisture diffusion behavior and induced damage in polymer matrix composites under varying hygrothermal conditions. In Part I, the moisture diffusion characteristics in hybrid composites using moisture concentration-dependent diffusion method have been investigated. Also, a multi-stage diffusion model was proposed to explain the deviation of moisture diffusion behavior for sandwich composites from …

Effects Of Local Ph On The Formation And Regulation Of Cristae Morphologies, Dong Hoon Song, Jonghyun Park, Martin A. Philbert, Ann Marie Sastry, Wei Lu Aug 2014

Effects Of Local Ph On The Formation And Regulation Of Cristae Morphologies, Dong Hoon Song, Jonghyun Park, Martin A. Philbert, Ann Marie Sastry, Wei Lu

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Cristae, folded subcompartments of the inner mitochondrial membrane (IMM), have complex and dynamic morphologies. Since cristae are the major site of adenosine triphosphate synthesis, morphological changes of cristae have been studied in relation to functional states of mitochondria. In this sense, investigating the functional and structural significance of cristae may be critical for understanding progressive mitochondrial dysfunction. However, the detailed mechanisms of the formation and regulation of these cristae structures have not been fully elucidated. Among the hypotheses concerning the regulation of cristae morphologies, we exclusively investigate the effects of the local pH gradient on the cristae morphologies by using …

Modeling And Simulation Of Hydrokinetic Composite Turbine System, Haifeng Li Jan 2014

Modeling And Simulation Of Hydrokinetic Composite Turbine System, Haifeng Li

Doctoral Dissertations

"The utilization of kinetic energy from the river is promising as an attractive alternative to other available renewable energy resources. Hydrokinetic turbine systems are advantageous over traditional dam based hydropower systems due to "zero-head" and mobility. The objective of this study is to design and analyze hydrokinetic composite turbine system in operation. Fatigue study and structural optimization of composite turbine blades were conducted. System level performance of the composite hydrokinetic turbine was evaluated. A fully-coupled blade element momentum-finite element method algorithm has been developed to compute the stress response of the turbine blade subjected to hydrodynamic and buoyancy loadings during …

Automatic Feedback Control Of Mechanical Gas Face Seals Via Clearance Control, Sachin S. Yelma, Robert G. Landers, Brad A. Miller Jan 2004

Automatic Feedback Control Of Mechanical Gas Face Seals Via Clearance Control, Sachin S. Yelma, Robert G. Landers, Brad A. Miller

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An approach based on proper orthogonal decomposition and Galerkin projection is presented for developing low-order nonlinear models of the gas film pressure within mechanical gas face seals. A technique is developed for determining an optimal set of global basis functions for the pressure field using data measured experimentally or obtained numerically from simulations of the seal motion. The reduced-order gas film models are shown to be computationally efficient compared to full-order models developed using the conventional semidiscretization methods. An example of a coned mechanical gas face seal in a flexibly mounted stator configuration is presented. Axial and tilt modes of …

A Single-Element Tuning Fork Piezoelectric Linear Actuator, J. Satonobu, K. Nakamura, S. Ueha, Daniel S. Stutts, James R. Friend

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper describes the design of a piezoelectric tuning-fork, dual-mode motor. The motor uses a single multilayer piezoelectric element in combination with tuning fork and shearing motion to form an actuator using a single drive signal. Finite-element analysis was used in the design of the motor, and the process is described along with the selection of the device's materials and its performance. Swaging was used to mount the multilayer piezoelectric element within the stator. Prototypes of the 25-mm long bidirectional actuator achieved a maximum linear no-load speed of 16.5 cm/s, a maximum linear force of 1.86 N, and maximum efficiency …

Detection And Classification Of Impact-Induced Damage In Composite Plates Using Neural Networks, Rohit Dua, Steve Eugene Watkins, Donald C. Wunsch, K. Chandrashekhara, Farhad Akhavan Jan 2001

Artificial neutral networks (ANN) can be used as an online health monitoring systems (involving damage assessment, fatigue monitoring and delamination detection) for composite structures owing to their inherent fast computing speeds, parallel processing and ability to learn and adapt to the experimental data. The amount of impact-induced strain on a composite structure can be found using strain sensors attached to composite structures. Prior work has shown that strain-based ANN can characterize impact energy on composite plates and that strain signatures can be associated with damage types and severity. This paper reports the extension of this approach for damage classification using …
