Modeling And Identification Of A Realistic Spiking Neural Network And Musculoskeletal Model Of The Human Arm, And An Application To The Stretch Reflex, Manish Sreenivasa, Ko Ayusawa, Yoshihiko Nakamura

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

This study develops a multi-level neuromuscular model consisting of topological pools of spiking motor, sensory and interneurons controlling a bi-muscular model of the human arm. The spiking output of motor neuron pools were used to drive muscle actions and skeletal movement via neuromuscular junctions. Feedback information from muscle spindles were relayed via monosynaptic excitatory and disynaptic inhibitory connections, to simulate spinal afferent pathways. Subject-specific model parameters were identified from human experiments by using inverse dynamics computations and optimization methods. The identified neuromuscular model was used to simulate the biceps stretch reflex and the results were compared to an independent dataset. …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Water resource problems currently are much more important in proper planning especially for arid regions, such as Gansu in China. For agricultural and industrial activities, prediction of groundwater status is critical. As a main branch of neural network, shallow artificial neural network models have been deployed in prediction areas such as groundwater and rainfall since late 1980s. In this paper, artificial neural network (ANN) model within a newly proposed algorithm has been developed for groundwater status forecasting. Having considered previous algorithms for ANN model in time series forecast, this new Monte Carlo based algorithm demonstrated a good result. The experiments …

Building A Microsimulation Model Of Heroin Use Careers In Australia, Alison Ritter, Nagesh Shukla, Marian D. Shanahan, Van Hoang Phuong, Vu Lam Cao, Pascal Perez, Michael P. Farrell

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Illicit heroin use is a worldwide problem, with significant health and social costs. Treatment is known to be effective in changing heroin use habits, but it often needs to be provided over a lifetime, with people cycling in and out of treatment. It is therefore important to capture a long-term perspective on heroin use careers. The aim of this project was to build a lifetime microsimulation model of heroin using careers. This paper describes the conceptual logic of the model, the input parameters and the verification and validation results. A microsimulation model was chosen as the most appropriate simulation platform …

Individual-Level Simulation Model For Cost Benefit Analysis In Healthcare, Nagesh Shukla, Vu Lam Cao, Van Hoang Phuong, Marian D. Shanahan, Alison Ritter, Pascal Perez

SMART Infrastructure Facility - Papers

Illicit drug use creates significant burden at societal, family and personal levels. Every year substantial resources are allocated for treatment and the consequences of illicit drug use in Australia and around the world. Heroin is one of the major forms of illicit drugs. Several independent heroin treatment strategies or interventions exist and state-of-the art research demonstrates their efficacy and relative costeffectiveness. However, assessing total potential gains and burden from providing all treatment interventions or varying the mix of heroin treatments has never been attempted. This paper proposed an individual-level simulation model (ISM) which addresses net social benefit over a lifetime …

Case Study: A Model Based Systems Engineering (Mbse) Framework For Characterising Transportation Systems Over The Full Life Cycle, William R. Scott, Richard Fullalove, Gary Arabian, Allan P. Campbell

SMART Infrastructure Facility - Papers

Development of transport infrastructure has significant challenges including acquisition lag, phased evolution, multiple disparate stakeholders and environment-specific issues. The Asset Standards Authority (ASA) at TfNSW is introducing MBSE to address these challenges. Instrumental to the introduction is the development of a framework that structures the available data and provides guidance and traceability between the data sets. This framework combines the enterprise-level drivers with the lower level drivers such as standards to outline a generic conceptual design for a transport system. This conceptual design is then used to guide future system development. The outcome is future project information based on greater, …

Analytic Performance Model For State-Based Mac Layer Cooperative Retransmission Protocols, Brett Hagelstein, Mehran Abolhasan, Daniel R. Franklin, Farzad Safaei, Wei Ni

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Cooperative retransmission can significantly improve link reliability over lossy and time-varying wireless links. However, comparing retransmission protocols is challenging, and generally requires simplistic assumptions specific to each protocol. In this paper, we develop a general model to evaluate cooperative retransmission protocols with distributed, slot-based contention algorithms. Specifically, we propose to calculate the relay time-out probabilities at a MAC time-slot scale, formulate retransmission outcomes as functions of the time-out probabilities, and derive the probability of a retransmission process for every data frame. We also propose a Markov extension of our model to characterise the dependency between retransmissions of multiple frames. This …

Design-Oriented Stress–Strain Model For Concrete Under Combined Frp-Steel Confinement, G Lin, Tao Yu, Jin Guang Teng Jan 2016

Design-Oriented Stress–Strain Model For Concrete Under Combined Frp-Steel Confinement, G Lin, Tao Yu, Jin Guang Teng

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Extensive research has been conducted on fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP)-confined plain and RC columns, leading to a large number of stress–strain models. Most of these models have been developed for FRP-confined plain concrete and are thus applicable only to concrete in FRP-confined RC columns with a negligible amount of transverse steel reinforcement. The few models that have been developed for concrete under the combined confinement of FRP and transverse steel reinforcement are either inaccurate or too complex for direct use in design. This paper presents an accurate design-oriented stress–strain model for concrete under combined FRP-steel confinement in FRP-confined circular RC columns. …

A Stochastic And Flexible Activity Based Model For Large Population Application To Belgium, Johan Barthelemy, Philippe L. Toint

SMART Infrastructure Facility - Papers

The VirtualBelgium project aims at developing an understanding of the evolution of the Belgian population using agent-based simulations and considering various aspects of this evolution such as demographics, residential choices, activity patterns, mobility, etc. This simulation is based on a validated synthetic population consisting of approximately 10,000,000 individuals and 4,350,000 households located in the 589 municipalities of Belgium. The work presented in this paper focuses only on the mobility behaviour of such large populations and this is simulated using an activity-based approach in which the travel demand is derived from the activities performed by the individuals. The proposed model is …

A Distributed Broadcast Algorithm For Duty-Cycled Networks With Physical Interference Model, Dianbo Zhao, Kwan-Wu Chin Jan 2015

A Distributed Broadcast Algorithm For Duty-Cycled Networks With Physical Interference Model, Dianbo Zhao, Kwan-Wu Chin

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Broadcast is a fundamental operation in multi-hop wireless networks. Given a source node with a message to broadcast, the objective is to propagate the message to all nodes in an interferencefree manner while incurring minimum latency. This problem, called Minimum-Latency Broadcast Scheduling (MLBS), has been studied extensively in wireless networks whereby nodes remain on all times and has been shown to be NP-hard. However, only a few studies have addressed this problem in the context of duty-cycled wireless networks, which unfortunately, remains NP-hard. In these networks, nodes do not wake up simultaneously, and hence, not all neighbors of a transmitting …

Simulink Model For Examining Dynamic Interactions Involving Electro-Mechanical Oscillations In Distribution Systems, Dothinka Ranamuka Rallage, Ashish P. Agalgaonkar, Kashem M. Muttaqi

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In Australian medium voltage (MV) distribution networks, the majority of embedded local generation (LG) uses synchronous machine based technology. LG units with a synchronous generator can easily be dispatched and controlled to provide or absorb reactive power and thereby locally supporting the system voltage and increasing the voltage stability margin. The fast response from a synchronous machine based LG unit exciter will ensure fast voltage recovery. This will significantly improve the transient voltage stability. Also, the synchronous machine based LG units can provide inertial support to the system. Furthermore, some of these LG technologies work as standby power supplies all …

Multi-Phase Variety Trials Using Both Composite And Individual Replicate Samples: A Model-Based Design Approach, Alison B. Smith, David G. Butler, C R. Cavanagh, Brian R. Cullis Jan 2015

Multi-Phase Variety Trials Using Both Composite And Individual Replicate Samples: A Model-Based Design Approach, Alison B. Smith, David G. Butler, C R. Cavanagh, Brian R. Cullis

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The present paper provides an approach for the design and analysis of variety trials that are used to obtain quality trait data. These trials are multi-phase in nature, comprising a field phase followed by one or more laboratory phases. Typically the laboratory phases are costly relative to the field phase and this imposes a limit on the number of samples that can be tested. Historically, this has been achieved by sacrificing field replication, either by testing a single replicate plot for each variety or a single composite sample, obtained by combining material from several field replicates. An efficient statistical analysis …

Vivambc: Estimating Viral Sequence Variation In Complex Populations From Illumina Deep-Sequencing Data Using Model-Based Clustering, Bie M. P Verbist, Lieven Clement, Joke Reumers, Kim Thys, Alexander Vapirev, Willem Talloen, Yves Wetzels, Joris Meys, Jeroen Aerssens, Luc Bijnens, Olivier Thas

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Background: Deep-sequencing allows for an in-depth characterization of sequence variation in complex populations. However, technology associated errors may impede a powerful assessment of low-frequency mutations. Fortunately, base calls are complemented with quality scores which are derived from a quadruplet of intensities, one channel for each nucleotide type for Illumina sequencing. The highest intensity of the four channels determines the base that is called. Mismatch bases can often be corrected by the second best base, i.e. the base with the second highest intensity in the quadruplet. A virus variant model-based clustering method, ViVaMBC, is presented that explores quality scores and second …

In-Arrears Interest Rate Derivatives Under The 3/2 Model, Joanna M. Goard Jan 2015

In-Arrears Interest Rate Derivatives Under The 3/2 Model, Joanna M. Goard

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Lie symmetry methods are used to find a closed form solution for in-arrears swaps under the 3/2 model ( ( ) ) ˆ 3 dr = r A t −α r dt + cr 2dZ . As well, approximate solutions are found for short-tenor inarrears caplets and floorlets under the same interest rate model. Comparisons are made of the approximate option values with those obtained with a computationally-intensive numerical scheme. The approximate pricing is found to be substantially fast easy to implement, while the relative errors with respect to the “true” prices are very small.

A Semi-Analytical Analysis Of The Stability Of The Reversible Selkov Model, Khaled. Al Noufaey, Timothy R. Marchant, Maureen P. Edwards Jan 2015

A Semi-Analytical Analysis Of The Stability Of The Reversible Selkov Model, Khaled. Al Noufaey, Timothy R. Marchant, Maureen P. Edwards

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Semi-analytical solutions for the reversible Selkov model are developed and used to investigate its static and dynamic stability. A one-dimensional reaction-diffusion cell is considered with all steps of the Selkov reaction modeled. A coupled set of four partial differential equations is obtained for the precursor, reactant, autocatalyst and final product concentrations. The Galerkin method is applied to approximate the spatial structure of the concentrations to obtain a lower-order, ordinary differential equation model, as an approximation to the governing partial differential equations. The semi-analytical model is analysed to obtain steady-state solutions, bifurcation diagrams and parameter maps in which the different types …

High Temperature Dislocation Structure And Nbc Precipitation In Three Ni-Fe-Nb-C Model Alloys, Andrii Kostryzhev, Parvez Mannan, Olexandra Marenych Jan 2015

High Temperature Dislocation Structure And Nbc Precipitation In Three Ni-Fe-Nb-C Model Alloys, Andrii Kostryzhev, Parvez Mannan, Olexandra Marenych

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In this original work, the dislocation structure and NbC precipitation were investigated in three Ni-based alloys (70Ni-Fe-0.331Nb-0.040C, 70Ni-Fe-0.851Nb-0.114C and 70Ni-Fe-1.420Nb-0.157C, wt%) thermomechanically processed in the temperature range of 1250-1075 °C. The dislocation structure inhomogeneity (dislocation networks and cell walls), which we observed in the middle and high Nb+C alloys, resulted from the dislocation pile-ups in the vicinity of >200 nm NbC particles. The dislocation density around >200 nm particles exceeded the average values by 5-7 times, and that in the cell walls might exceed the average values by 10 times. Twins and stacking faults were observed in all alloys after …

Grain Size Effect Of Thickness/Average Grain Size On Mechanical Behaviour, Fracture Mechanism And Constitutive Model For Phosphor Bronze Foil, Zhi Fang, Zhengyi Jiang, Xiaogang Wang, Cunlong Zhou, Dongbin Wei, Xianghua Liu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Size effects play a significant role in microforming process, and any dimensional change can have a great impact on materials' mechanical properties. In this paper, the size effects on deformation behaviour and fracture of phosphor foil were investigated in the form of grain size effect: the ratio of materials' thickness (T) to average grain size (D) by micro tensile tests. The ratio was designed to be closed to but larger than, less than and equal to 1, respectively. The results show that the amount of plastic deformation decreases with the decrease of the ratio of T/D, which indicates that the …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

2015 Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine. An advantage of semiconductor-based dedicated cardiac single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) cameras when compared to conventional Anger cameras is superior energy resolution. This provides the potential for improved separation of the photopeaks in dual radionuclide imaging, such as combined use of 99mTc and 123I . There is, however, the added complexity of tailing effects in the detectors that must be accounted for. In this paper we present a model-based correction algorithm which extracts the useful primary counts of 99mTc and 123I from projection data. Equations describing the …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

2015, Copyright Taylor & Francis Group, LLC. We analyze the steady-state operation of a generalized reactor model that encompasses a continuous flow bioreactor and an idealized continuous flow membrane reactor as limiting cases. The biochemical reaction kinetics is governed by a Contois growth model subject to noncompetitive substrate inhibition with a variable substrate yield coefficient. The steady-state performance of the reactor is predicted and stability of the steady-state solutions as a function of dimensionless residence time reported. Our results identified two cases of practical interest. The first feature corresponds to the case where solutions to both no-washout and washout conditions …

Multi-View Twri Scene Reconstruction Using A Joint Bayesian Sparse Approximation Model, Van Ha Tang, Abdesselam Bouzerdoum, Son Lam Phung, Fok Hing Chi Tivive

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper addresses the problem of scene reconstruction in conjunction with wall-clutter mitigation for compressed multi-view through-the-wall radar imaging (TWRI). We consider the problem where the scene behindthe-wall is illuminated from different vantage points using a different set of frequencies at each antenna. First, a joint Bayesian sparse recovery model is employed to estimate the antenna signal coefficients simultaneously, by exploiting the sparsity and inter-signal correlations among antenna signals. Then, a subspace-projection technique is applied to suppress the signal coefficients related to the wall returns. Furthermore, a multi-task linear model is developed to relate the target coefficients to the image …

Landslide susceptibility modeling is an essential early step towards managing landslide risk. A minimum of $4.8 million is lost due to landslide related damages every year in Illawara region of Australia. At present, Data mining and knowledge discovery techniques are becoming popular in building landslide susceptibility models due to their enhanced predictive performances. Until now, the lack of tools to undertake data extraction and making the predictions have limited the applicability of this novel technique in landslide model building. This paper discusses the development of the LSDM (Landslide Susceptibility Data Mining) toolbar which was designed to utilize machine learning techniques …

Microscopic Model For Exchange Bias From Grain-Boundary Disorder In A Ferromagnet/Antiferromagnet Thin Film With A Nanocrystalline Microstructure, David L. Cortie, A G. Biternas, R W. Chantrell, Xiaolin Wang, Frank Klose Jan 2014

Microscopic Model For Exchange Bias From Grain-Boundary Disorder In A Ferromagnet/Antiferromagnet Thin Film With A Nanocrystalline Microstructure, David L. Cortie, A G. Biternas, R W. Chantrell, Xiaolin Wang, Frank Klose

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Monte Carlo spin simulations were coupled to a Voronoi microstructure-generator to predict the magnitude and behavior of exchange bias in a ferromagnet/antiferromagnet (AF) thin film bilayer with a nanocrystalline microstructure. Our model accounts for the effects of irregular grain-shapes, finite-sized particles, and the possible presence of local random-fields originating from the antiferromagnet's grain-boundary regions. As the grain-boundary represents a crystal-structure distortion, we model the local effect on the exchange constants in the Gaussian approximation which can cause regions resembling a spin glass confined to an unusual 2D topology. Although an ensemble of completely disconnected AF grains isolated by non-magnetic barriers …

Optimistic Fair Exchange In The Enhanced Chosen-Key Model, Yang Wang, Man Ho Au, Willy Susilo

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Optimistic fair exchange (OFE) is a kind of protocol to guarantee fairness for the parties involved in an exchange with the help of an arbitrator. A fundamental work of optimistic fair exchange is to define security models capturing realistic attacks and design schemes secure in practical models. The security models are very essential to ensure that they capture practical situation, which will ensure that the protocols can be adopted in practice. The contributions of this paper are three fold. First, we observe that the existing OFE models do not capture realistic situation, where the adversary can actually observe the full …

An Advanced Mathematical Model And Its Experimental Verification For Trilayer Conjugated Polymer Actuators, Chuc Nguyen, Gursel Alici, Gordon G. Wallace

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper describes the establishment of an enhanced mathematical model and an inversion-based controller based on the proposed model for a trilayer conjugated polymer actuator that will steer a cochlear implant through a 3-D structure. The multilayer electroactive polymer actuator that operates in air will suit many biomedical applications. We propose to use viscoelastic models for the conducting polymer and membrane layers of the actuator so that its mechanical properties can be incorporated into the actuator more accurately. The proposed model accurately predicts the frequency response of the electrical admittance and curvature of the conjugated polymer actuators, and its efficacy …

Confinement Model For Frp Confined Normal- And High-Strength Concrete Circular Columns, Thong M. Pham, Muhammad N. S Hadi

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This study establishes a confinement model for FRP confined normal- and high-strength concrete circular columns. A new column parameter was suggested for estimating the compressive strength of FRP confined concrete. The proposed model is able to predict the ultimate condition of FRP confined concrete columns that have similar unconfined concrete strength and confining pressure but significant differences in the jacket stiffness. The proposed model was then verified using a database of 574 FRP confined concrete circular columns with different types of FRP. This database covers unconfined concrete strength between 15 MPa and 170 MPa and specimens with a diameter ranging …

A Model For Acid-Mediated Tumour Growth With Nonlinear Acid Production Term, Andrew B. Holder, Marianito R. Rodrigo, Miguel A. Herrero Jan 2014

A Model For Acid-Mediated Tumour Growth With Nonlinear Acid Production Term, Andrew B. Holder, Marianito R. Rodrigo, Miguel A. Herrero

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This article considers a mathematical model for tumour growth based on an acid-mediated hypothesis, i.e. the assumption that tumour progression is facilitated by acidification of the region around the tumour-host interface. The resulting destruction of the normal tissue environment promotes tumour growth. We will derive and analyse a reaction-diffusion model for tumour progression that includes different aspects of pathological and healthy cell metabolism to check tumour growth. Our results can provide insights into the governing dynamics of invasive processes that may suggest possible intervention strategies, leading to the design of new and better experiments or treatments.

A Novel Hybrid-Link-Based Container Routing Model, Shuaian Wang Jan 2014

A Novel Hybrid-Link-Based Container Routing Model, Shuaian Wang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Container routing determines how to transport containers from their origins to their destinations in a liner shipping network. Container routing needs to be solved a number of times as a subproblem in tactical-level decision planning of liner shipping operations. Container routing is similar to the multi-commodity flow problem. This research proposes a novel hybrid-link-based model that nests the existing origin-link-based and destination-link-based models as special cases. Moreover, the hybrid-link-based model is at least as compact as the origin-to-destination-link-based, origin-link-based and destination-link-based models in the literature.

A New Model For The Prediction Of Earthquake Ground-Motion Duration In Iran, Saman Yaghmaei-Sabegh, Zhila Shoghian, M Neaz Sheikh

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The paper proposes a new empirical model to estimate earthquake ground-motion duration, which significantly influences the damage potential of an earthquake. The paper is concerned with significant duration parameters that are defined as the time intervals between which specified values of Arias intensity are reached. In the proposed model, significant duration parameters have been expressed as a function of moment magnitude, closest site-source distance, and site condition. The predictive model has been developed based on a database of earthquake ground-motion records in Iran, containing 286 records up to the year 2007, and a random-effect regression procedure. The result of the …

A New Empirical Model For Shear Strength Of Reinforced Concrete Beam - Column Connections, Tung Tran, Muhammad N. S Hadi, Thong M. Pham Jan 2014

A New Empirical Model For Shear Strength Of Reinforced Concrete Beam - Column Connections, Tung Tran, Muhammad N. S Hadi, Thong M. Pham

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A new empirical model to estimate the joint shear strength of both exterior and interior beam-column connections is proposed. In the model, four parameters that have the most influence on joint shear strength are considered. Among these four, a new parameter is introduced to consider the bond condition and the possibility of beam bars transferring joint shear force into the columns. Consideration of this parameter in the model significantly improves the accuracy of the predicted joint shear strength. To calibrate the model, a large database of 98 reinforced concrete (RC) exterior and 73 RC interior beam-column connections displaying joint failure …
