The Safety And Environmental Effects Of Nuclear Power Plants, Raymond E. Schweikart Jan 1973

The Safety And Environmental Effects Of Nuclear Power Plants, Raymond E. Schweikart

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The nuclear power plant has given new direction to power generation. It offers a new source of heat. The heat can now come from the fission of atomic fuel and not from the burning of fossil fuel. Safety and protection from the possible hazards of radioactivity generated by nuclear power plants is a completely new and untested area. Emergency systems and over designed construction are only part of what has to be done to make absolutely certain such accidents, if they occur, will be contained allowing no harmful radioactivity to reach the environment. Handling of radioactive wastes is very critical …

Development Of A Sixteen Line Multiplexer, James H. Stangel Jan 1973

Development Of A Sixteen Line Multiplexer, James H. Stangel

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This report explains the development of a telephone line multiplexer to be used with a computer based personal paging system. The large geographical area coverage made possible by computer processing results in many calls having to cross telephone tariff boundaries. Since system users cannot be expected to pay long distance charges, dedicated lines which cross tariff boundaries must be leased. Multiplexing applied to those leased lines reduces the cost of data transmission, and is, therefore, justified. The design of the multiplexer proceeds from a specification set which is derived from user response requirements. Fundamentally, the response consists in advising the …

An Investigation Of Methods For Reuse Of Rubber Tires, Charles Edward Armbruster

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Methods of reusing/recycling the more than 250 million automobile and truck tires which are worn out each year were investigated. The existing methods of reusing tires account for about 30 percent of the volume of scrap tires generated each year. These methods are, Retreading, Reclaiming (by reducing to ground up rubber and fiber), and Tire Splitting (stamp items out of sidewall and tread areas). Several possibilities for reusing/recycling the unused 70 percent were discovered. These methods are as follows: Destructive Distillation -- a method of recovering chemicals from tires by pyrolitic action. It is anticipated that eventually as much as …

The Operations Research Approach For An Effective Management Information System, Joel L. Mutzman Jan 1972

The Operations Research Approach For An Effective Management Information System, Joel L. Mutzman

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This report serves as an overview to the design of an effective Management Information System (MIS) by incorporating the modeling techniques of an Operations Research (OR) approach. It will be shown that the consideration of OR input requirements mixed with the information requirements for a data base existing at the everyday accounting and operational level creates a responsible management control and decision-making tool. This mix of OR and everyday information approach varies as a function of the managerial activities and the organizational level of effort. In lieu of designing a "total" MIS system, MIS designers should structure a loosely connected …

Minimum Weight Design Of Stiffened Cylindrical Shells Using Structural Synthesis, Joseph Eugene Heckelbeck Jan 1972

Minimum Weight Design Of Stiffened Cylindrical Shells Using Structural Synthesis, Joseph Eugene Heckelbeck

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Several search methods for unconstrained minimization in the minimum weight design of a stiffened cylindrical shell are investigated. The cylindrical shell, under study, is stiffened with bar shaped stiffeners in the longitudinal and circumferential directions, and capable of being loaded both axially and radially with up to ten separate load conditions. For this investigation, it was necessary to alter an unconstrained minimization program for use on the IBM 360 computer by employing double precision techniques. The computer runs obtained on this system are compared with those provided by the prior work of William Morrow and Lucien Schmit. The results show, …

Suppression Of Turbofan And Turbojet Engine Generated Noise, Harry David Master Jan 1972

Suppression Of Turbofan And Turbojet Engine Generated Noise, Harry David Master

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Every advance in the transformation of heat energy into mechanical energy has involved a noise problem, and in general it increases with the power production. The jet airplane is a good example: the large-scale turbulence of the exhaust gases in the jet forms an unusually intense source of sound the control of which is quite difficult. The additionally generated fan noises add characteristic fan tones which are particularly noticeable on landing approaches. the human ear is the vulnerable receiver of these noises, and the problem becomes one of deciding how much jet engine noise reduction is required for the comfort …

Computer Method For Airport Noise Exposure Forecast, John Michael Bateman

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The major problem facing air transportation for the next decade is aircraft noise. The noise level due to the operation of large jet aircraft has created a very serious annoyance problem to the people living near of adjacent to jet airports. The noise problem has developed both for take-off and landing operations of these aircraft with take -off noise causing the greatest annoyance factor. A technique called Noise Exposure Forecast (NEF) has been developed to identify the annoyance factor of these noises to people and activities on the ground. With these NEF ratings or numbers, planners can better determine the …
