For over twenty years, the Lafayette affiliate of Habitat for Humanity has partnered with the Purdue University EPICS program to connect students to real-world problems where they can learn engineering through experience. Past projects have focused on improving material storage methods, enhancing volunteer safety, developing energy-efficient building designs, and optimizing operational efficiency at Habitat for Humanity locations. The partnership is mutually beneficial for Habitat for Humanity – which benefits from the products students deliver – and for students – who learn how to apply engineering to real-world design. The purpose of this poster is to further explore the idea of a “SMART” travel app. To design an app that is self-monitoring, that could analyze data and present the best travel options for customers in terms of available providers, price and time. Not only should the app be beneficial to customers but it should also be beneficial to providers. Our Hybrid Energy System team is committed to develop low-cost renewable energy solutions to rural African communities where access to electricity from government grid is not available. According to a World Bank’s report, only 24% of sub-Saharan countries have access to electricity. Our team has been working with local partners to build renewable energy systems since 2008. From 2015 the team has been working on micro hydropower turbine and vertical-axis wind turbine with solar energy system combined. The 4-H NFPA Fluid Power Challenge partnered Purdue Polytechnic Institute and Indiana 4-H with the National Fluid Power Association and Center for Compact and Efficient Fluid Power to provide teams of Indiana youth in 6-8th grades with opportunity to learn about hydraulics, engineering design, and other STEM skills. This created an opportunity to give youth a learning experience with STEM through hands-on, experiential learning activities. Youth experienced a one day workshop in which they worked as teams to learn concepts of fluid power through hands-on learning. We are going to make an app that can be used by people traveling through or from ORD airport (Chicago), which will provide live time update for security check line (in terms of time), change of gate for the flight and whether or not the flight is on time. The reason for developing this application is to simplify and improve the passenger’s overall airport experience in order to make it more enjoyable, informative, and time efficient while decreasing the current negative mentality towards traveling.
