For over twenty years, the Lafayette affiliate of Habitat for Humanity has partnered with the Purdue University EPICS program to connect students to real-world problems where they can learn engineering through experience. Past projects have focused on improving material storage methods, enhancing volunteer safety, developing energy-efficient building designs, and optimizing operational efficiency at Habitat for Humanity locations. The partnership is mutually beneficial for Habitat for Humanity – which benefits from the products students deliver – and for students – who learn how to apply engineering to real-world design. The purpose of this poster is to further explore the idea of a “SMART” travel app. To design an app that is self-monitoring, that could analyze data and present the best travel options for customers in terms of available providers, price and time. EPICS is a service-learning design program in which teams of students partner with local and global community organizations to address human, community, and environmental needs. EPICS is an academic program in which teams of Purdue students partner with local not-for-profit community organizations to provide technology solutions. Team Ecuador is a division of the non-profit EPICS program at Purdue University. Since 2012 Team Ecuador has been partnered with FEVI, a non-governmental organization, to develop education infrastructure in Lumbisi. Our Hybrid Energy System team is committed to develop low-cost renewable energy solutions to rural African communities where access to electricity from government grid is not available. According to a World Bank’s report, only 24% of sub-Saharan countries have access to electricity. Our team has been working with local partners to build renewable energy systems since 2008. From 2015 the team has been working on micro hydropower turbine and vertical-axis wind turbine with solar energy system combined. The goal of the project is to increase awareness about global climate change and the necessity of environmentally sustainable practice, particularly among the younger citizens of the Lafayette area. The Lyn Greece Boys & Girls Club extended a hand and offered us land to install a pollinator garden on their campus and an opportunity to meet with the kids one-on-one to promote sustainability ideas and help them understand the basics of gardening. The Indiana Bicentennial Commission (IBC) was created by former governor Mitch Daniels to plan and execute a statewide celebration of Indiana’s 200th birthday in 2016. The commission has requested that researchers at Purdue University develop a high-tech Indiana-made flame torch a la the Olympic torch to be used in the celebration and displayed throughout all 92 counties of the state. In addition, the IBC requested that Purdue’s EPICS program develop a kid-friendly torch that can be used alongside the actual torch in relays, celebrations, and community outreach events throughout the state.

The 4-H NFPA Fluid Power Challenge partnered Purdue Polytechnic Institute and Indiana 4-H with the National Fluid Power Association and Center for Compact and Efficient Fluid Power to provide teams of Indiana youth in 6-8th grades with opportunity to learn about hydraulics, engineering design, and other STEM skills. This created an opportunity to give youth a learning experience with STEM through hands-on, experiential learning activities. Youth experienced a one day workshop in which they worked as teams to learn concepts of fluid power through hands-on learning.
