Neuromodulation Based Control Of Autonomous Robots On A Cloud Computing Platform, Cameron Muhammad
Neuromodulation Based Control Of Autonomous Robots On A Cloud Computing Platform, Cameron Muhammad
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In recent years, the advancement of neurobiologically plausible models and computer networking has resulted in new ways of implementing control systems on robotic platforms. The work presents a control approach based on vertebrate neuromodulation and its implementation on autonomous robots in the open-source, open-access environment of robot operating system (ROS). A spiking neural network (SNN) is used to model the neuromodulatory function for generating context based behavioral responses of the robots to sensory input signals. The neural network incorporates three types of neurons- cholinergic and noradrenergic (ACh/NE) neurons for attention focusing and action selection, dopaminergic (DA) neurons for rewards- and …
Water And Nutrient Reuse Within Closed Hydroponic Systems, Emerson Christie
Water And Nutrient Reuse Within Closed Hydroponic Systems, Emerson Christie
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Currently, little research exists on the maintenance of individual nutrient balance within the nutrient solutions of closed hydroponic systems and how this maintenance may result in reductions in water and nutrient consumption. In this study, a nutrient solution management procedure was developed to maintain outputs while minimizing inputs. Lactuca sativa (lettuce) crops were grown in six closed hydroponic systems utilizing the nutrient film technique. Electrical conductivity was used as the primary indicator of nutrient solution quality and determined if the nutrient solution was discarded and replaced (control systems) or restored (test systems). Restorations in test systems were made individually to …

Evaluation Of Long Term Effects Of Erosion Due To Groin Placement In The Northern Yucatan Peninsula, Andrew V. Mahfood
Evaluation Of Long Term Effects Of Erosion Due To Groin Placement In The Northern Yucatan Peninsula, Andrew V. Mahfood
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis documents the results of a study conducted to evaluate the long term effects of groin placement on beach re-nourishment and beach restoration in the Yucatan peninsula. The study includes the evaluation of six control points located on Chelem beach in Yucatan, Mexico, very close to the Progreso pier. The control points were set up in an active groin field to record data on the re-nourishment project covering the Chelem beach area. These erosion control groins were constructed as part of an experimental project to see how the adopted U.S. Army Corps of Engineers guidelines, for installing groins, affected …
Computational Analysis To Enhance Laminar Flow Convective Heat Transfer Rate In An Enclosure Using Aerosol Nanofluids, Andrew Hudson
Computational Analysis To Enhance Laminar Flow Convective Heat Transfer Rate In An Enclosure Using Aerosol Nanofluids, Andrew Hudson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The current research intends to provide a starting point to effectively model aerosol heat transfer in a narrow, enclosed body. This research can lead to future modeling of nano fluids including their heat transfer characteristics and erosion effects on the walls of an enclosure. The model was developed using ICEM CFD for the mesh and FLUENT for the fluid flow modeling. Six different aspect ratio enclosures were developed to study the effects of varying aspect ratio. The natural convection of air was developed first to establish the appropriateness of the models being used. A mesh check was performed using one …
Application Of Self-Monitoring For Situational Awareness, Christopher Trickler
Application Of Self-Monitoring For Situational Awareness, Christopher Trickler
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Self-monitoring devices and services are used for physical wellness, personal tracking and self-improvement. These individual devices and services can only provide information based on what they can measure directly or historically without an intermediate system. This paper proposes a self-monitoring system to perform situational awareness which may extend into providing insight into predictable behaviors. Knowing an individual’s current state and likelihood of particular behaviors occurring is a general solution. This knowledge-based solution derived from sensory data has many applications. The proposed system could monitor current individual situational status, automatically provide personal status as it changes, aid personal improvement, contribute to …
Impedance Changes In Biceps Brachii Due To Isometric Contractions And Muscle Fatigue Using Electrical Impedance Myography (Eim), Travis Orth
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Electrical impedance myography (EIM) is a non-invasive technique used to evaluate neuromuscular conditions by using a quantitative parameter called impedance (Z). It relies upon the application and measurement of high-frequency, low-intensity electrical current imbedded over a localized muscle to determine its opposition to current flow. In brevity, impedance determines the resistance of muscle fibers due to changes in muscle composition. The objective of this thesis was to establish a relationship between muscles at rest and during isometric contractions at various force levels(25%, 50%, and 100% of maximum voluntary contraction) of the biceps brachii over a multifrequency spectrum. Impedance measurements due …
Nylon Tension Pid Control During Raw Tire Assembly, Yuan-Yu Luo
Nylon Tension Pid Control During Raw Tire Assembly, Yuan-Yu Luo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to evaluate several control methods to see which one has the best control of nylon tension during raw tire assembly. After nylon application step of the tire building process, the shape of the tire will undergo inflation that causes the nylon layers to expand and produces tension gradient. To overcome such a problem, the process needs to preapply a nylon trip with a gradient of tension so the tension can be balanced after the inflation step. The study evaluated several PID controllers and gathered data to see which controller results in the best nylon …

Considering all these applications, especially controlling heat transfer in nuclear power plants, knowledge and research results of natural convection in enclosure play a vital …
Development And Validation Of Probabilistic Fatigue Models Containing Out-Life Suspensions, Noel S. Murray
Development And Validation Of Probabilistic Fatigue Models Containing Out-Life Suspensions, Noel S. Murray
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Author's abstract: In the area of reliability engineering it is necessary to be confident that a component or system of components will not fail under use for safety and cost reasons. One major mechanism of failure to a mechanical component is fatigue. This is the repetitious motion of loading and unloading of the material, typically below the ultimate tensile strength of the material, which ultimately leads to a catastrophic failure. To ensure this does not happen, engineers design components based on tests to determine the life of these components. These tests are typically conducted on a bench type tester in …

Applying Transportation Forecasting To The Atlanta Area Public Transportation System, Aaron L. Taylor
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, we examine the implementation of volume delay functions to the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transportation Authority (MARTA) system. Volume delay functions are n differentiable functions used to estimate the long-term distribution of user traffic on transportation systems. We will demonstrate the graphical behavior of these functions as well as explain the constraints for these functions. These tasks will be completed by developing a simplistic yet unrealistic model, demonstrate how the integral is used to estimate the total sum of this model, and then introduce the two functions which will be used in the analysis. The final task of …
