The Application Of Smartphone Technology To Economic And Environmental Analysis Of Building Energy Conservation Strategies, Patrick Leslie, Joshua Pearce, Rob Harrap, Sylvie Daniel May 2011

The Application Of Smartphone Technology To Economic And Environmental Analysis Of Building Energy Conservation Strategies, Patrick Leslie, Joshua Pearce, Rob Harrap, Sylvie Daniel

Joshua M. Pearce

This paper investigates the use of smartphone technology as a tool to implement building energy audit programmes to increase energy conservation measure (ECM) uptake and concomitant environmental and economic benefits. The smartphone audit analysed provides an energy audit platform with: (i) quasi-real time analysis, (ii) continuous user engagement, (iii) geospatial customization, (iv) additional ECMs, (v) ECM ranking and user education, and (vi) the ability to constantly evolve. A case study of 157,000 homes in Southeastern Ontario shows that 55 years is needed to complete energy audits for all dwellings in the region following a traditional energy audit model. However, the …

Data Center Recovery Best Practices: Before, During, And After Disaster Recovery Execution, Heather M. Brotherton

Heather M Brotherton

This qualitative multiple case study analysis reviews well documented past information technology disasters with a goal of identifying practical before, during, and after disaster recovery best practices. The topic of cyberinfrastructure resiliency is explored including barriers to cyberinfrastructure resiliency. Factors explored include: adherence to established procedures, staff training in recovery procedures, chain of command structure, recovery time and cost, and mutual aid relationships. Helpful tools and resources are included to assist planners.

Is Your Online Training Accessible?, Linda Huglin, Shannon Rist, Bob Casper

Linda Huglin

The number of workers with disabilities is expected to increase substantially within the next few years, particularly with the return of veterans wounded in combat. The increase in training programs that are delivered online requires that accessibility features be put in place to accommodate this group of workers. The purpose of this interactive session is to demonstrate techniques that enhance accessibility of online training materials via a "makeover" of an existing online course.

Comparison Of An Introductory Engineering Course With And Without Legomindstorms Robots, Kevin Mcfall, H. Scholz Mar 2011

Comparison Of An Introductory Engineering Course With And Without Legomindstorms Robots, Kevin Mcfall, H. Scholz

Kevin McFall

An introductory engineering course was run in two concurrent terms, one without LEGO Mindstorms robots, and one with. A comparison was performed between the two approaches considering teamwork, leadership, and engineering problem solving. In both groups, the project covered the engineering design process from customer needs through a working prototype. The first semester, student design teams were allowed to choose any toy-related project. In the second, they were required to use the LEGO robots to navigate a maze, find a colored ball, and return it to the starting point. During the non-robotic semester, one or two members of each team …

Separation Distance Reduction In Mimo Systems Using End-Fire Antenna Arrays, Amean Al_Safi Dec 2010

Separation Distance Reduction In Mimo Systems Using End-Fire Antenna Arrays, Amean Al_Safi

Amean S Al_Safi

The main problem in Multiple Input-Multiple Output (MIMO) systems is the separation distance between antennas which must be greater than or equal to half wavelength. Satisfying this separation is difficult or impossible especially at mobile communication, therefore this paper study the capability to reduce these separation distance by using End-Fire antenna arrays. Each antenna at the transmitter and receiver side is replaced by a set of antennas work as an array with a radiation pattern directed toward the axes of the arrays. The separation between elements in these arrays is fixed at quarter wavelength in order to have one main …

Proportional-Integral-Derivative (Pid) Temperature Control & Data Acquisition System For Faraday Filter Based Sodium Spectrometer, Vardan Semerjyan, Tao Yuan Dec 2010

Proportional-Integral-Derivative (Pid) Temperature Control & Data Acquisition System For Faraday Filter Based Sodium Spectrometer, Vardan Semerjyan, Tao Yuan

Vardan Semerjyan

Sodium (Na) Faraday filters based spectrometer is a relatively new instrument to study sodium nightglow [Harrell et al., 2010] as well as atmospheric chemistry in the mesopause region. Successful spectrometer measurement demands highly accurate control of filter temperature. The ideal operation site for this Na spectrometer would be an isolated location with minimum nocturnal sky background. Thus, the remote and automatic control of the filter temperature is a requirement for such operation, whereas current temperature controllers can only be adjusted manually by the operator. The proposed approach is aimed not only to enhance the accuracy of the temperature control but …
