In the summer of 2011, the Exploration Vessel NAUTILUS is undertaking a four-month expedition to the Black, Aegean and Mediterranean Seas, and North Atlantic Ocean. The primary goal of the NAUTILUS is to create a focus of international leadership for the development and integration of leading-edge technologies, educational programs, field operations, and public outreach programs for ocean exploration, in partnership with NOAA, National Geographic Society, Office of Naval Research, and other sponsors. To do so, the program uses a complement of deep submergence vehicle systems and “telepresence” technologies to engage scientists, educators and the public, both at sea and ashore, …

High Resolution Sea Floor Bathymetry Using High Frequency Multibeam Sonar And Structured Light Laser Imaging, C. Roman, G. Inglis, C. Smart, I. Vaughn, S. Carey
Christopher N. Roman
Detailed bathymetric maps of the sea floor with centimeter level resolution can be produced by underwater vehicles using multibeam sonars and structured light laser imaging. Over spatial scales up to tens of thousands of square meters it is possible to produce maps gridded to sub centimeter levels. This level of accuracy demands detailed treatments of the sensor relative data, the vehicle navigation data and the vehicle to sensor position and rotational offsets. The presented results will show comparisons between these two sensor modalities. Data have a been collected during recent field programs to the Kolumbo volcanic crater and the Southern …

Autonomous Blimp Control Using Reinforcement Learning, Yiwei Liu, Zengxi Pan, David Stirling, Fazel Naghdy
Professor Fazel Naghdy
This paper presents a new approach for navigation control of an autonomous blimp using an intelligent reinforcement learning algorithm. Compared to the traditional model based control methods, this control strategy does not require a dynamic model of the blimp, which provides huge advantage in many practical situations where the blimp system model is either hard to acquire or too complicated to apply. As the blimp will acquire a range of the pilot skills through a learning and rewarding mechanism during actual navigation trials, it can automatically account for the environmental changes during the navigation. The simulation data generated from a …

Parametric Model Of The Scala Tympani For Haptic-Rendered Cochlear Implantation, Catherine Todd, Fazel Naghdy
Professor Fazel Naghdy
A parametric model of the human scala tympani has been designed for use in a haptic-rendered computer simulation of cochlear implant surgery. It will be the first surgical simulator of this kind. A geometric model of the Scala Tympani has been derived from measured data for this purpose. The model is compared with two existing descriptions of the cochlear spiral. A first approximation of the basilar membrane is also produced. The structures are imported into a force-rendering software application for system development.

Symbolic Modelling Of Dynamic Human Motions, David Stirling, Amir Hesami, Christian Ritz, Kevin Adistambha, Fazel Naghdy
Professor Fazel Naghdy
Numerous psychological studies have shown that humans develop various stylistic patterns of motion behaviour, or dynamic signatures, which can be in general, or in some cases uniquely, associated with an individual. In a broad sense, such motion features provide a basis for non-verbal communication, or body language, and in more specific circumstances they combine to form a Dynamic Finger Print (DFP) of an individual, such as their gait, or walking pattern. A new modelling and classification approach for spatiotemporal human motions is proposed, and in particular the walking gait. The movements are obtained through a full body inertial motion capture …

Acquisition of behavioural skills of a human operator and recreating them in an intelligent autonomous system has been a critical but rather challenging step in the development of complex intelligent autonomous systems. A systematic and generic method for realising this process will greatly simplify the development, commissioning and maintenance of autonomous systems.

Control Of Autonomous Airship, Yiwei Liu, Zengxi Pan, David Stirling, Fazel Naghdy
Professor Fazel Naghdy
Scientific research and development on the control of autonomous airship have shown a significant growth in recent years. New applications appear in the areas such as freight carrier, advertising, monitoring, surveillance, transportation, military and scientific research. The control of Autonomous airship is a very important problem for the aerial robots research. In this paper, the previous research on the control of autonomous blimp is reviewed, Several popular control methods are categorized and discussed in detail. Then an intelligent navigation control method, reinforcement learning control, is introduced in the autonomous blimp which was used for 2007 UAV Outback Challenge. The future …
Risk-Based Critical Infrastructure Protection Priorities For Emp And Solar Storms, George H. Baker Iii
Risk-Based Critical Infrastructure Protection Priorities For Emp And Solar Storms, George H. Baker Iii
George H Baker
The Commission to Assess the Threat to the United States from Electromagnetic Pulse Attack has provided a compelling case for protecting civilian infrastructure against the effects of EMP. As with protecting infrastructure against any hazard, it will be important to take a risk-based priority approach for EMP, recognizing that it is fiscally impracticable to protect everything. In this regard, EMP is particularly challenging in that it interferes with electrical and electronic data, control, transmission, and communication systems organic to nearly all infrastructures in a simultaneous and wide-scale manner. And, for nuclear burst altitudes of 100s of kilometers, the exposed geography …
Strategic Drivers Of Delivery Capacity, Lynn Crawford
Strategic Drivers Of Delivery Capacity, Lynn Crawford
Lynn Crawford
Recent research into the value of project management has highlighted the importance of 'fit' whereby the internal and external context of an organization would determine the configuration of project management that would add value. A major challenge for organizations, and a differentiator of corporate performance, is the ability to execute strategy. It is a key to corporate agility and the ability to build on global recovery. Projects and programs are the primary vehicles for strategy execution, and project management can therefore be seen as the delivery capability of organisations. In order to add value, project management must be configured to …
