Magnetic Transitions In Disordered Gdal2, D. Williams, Paul Shand, Thomas Pekarek, Ralph Skomski, Valeri Petkov, Diandra Leslie-Pelecky

Thomas M. Pekarek

The role of disorder in magnetic ordering transitions is investigated using mechanically milled GdAl2. Crystalline GdAl2 is a ferromagnet while amorphous GdAl2 is a spin glass. Nanostructured GdAl2 shows a paramagnetic-to-ferromagnetic transition and glassy behavior, with the temperature and magnitude of each transition dependent on the degree and type of disorder. Disorder is parametrized by a Gaussian distribution of Curie temperatures TC with mean TC and breadth Δ TC. A nonzero coercivity is observed at temperatures more than 20 K above the highest TC of any known Gd-Al phase; however, the coercivity decreases with decreasing temperature over the same temperature …

An atomic force microscope (AFM) was used to measure the steric forces of lipopolysaccharides (LPS) on the biofilm-forming bacteria, Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It is well known that LPS play a vital role in biofilm formation. These forces were characterized with a modified version of the Alexander and de Gennes (AdG) model for polymers, which is a function of equilibrium brush length, L, probe radius, R, temperature, T, separation distance, D, and an indefinite density variable, s. This last parameter was originally distinguished by de Gennes as the root spacing or mesh spacing depending upon the type of polymer adhesion; however since …

Disorder-Induced Depression Of The Curie Temperature In Mechanically Milled Gdal2, Marco Morales Torres, D. Williams, Paul Shand, C. Stark, Thomas Pekarek, L. Yue, Valeri Petkov, Diandra Leslie-Pelecky

Thomas M. Pekarek

The effect of disorder on the ferromagnetic transition is investigated in mechanically milled GdAl2. GdAl2is a ferromagnet when crystalline and a spin glass when amorphous. Mechanical milling progressively disorders the alloy, allowing observation of the change from ferromagnetic to a disordered magnetic state. X-ray diffraction and pair-distribution-function analysis are used to determine the grain size, lattice parameter, and mean-squared atomic displacements. The magnetization as a function of temperature is described by a Gaussian distribution of Curie temperatures. The mean Curie temperature decreases with decreasing lattice parameter, where lattice parameter serves as a measure of defect concentration. Two different rates of …

A Simplified Approach For Negative Skin Friction Calculation Of Special-Shaped Pile Considering Pile-Soil Interaction Under Surcharge, Gang-Qiang Kong, Hang Zhou, Han-Long Liu, Xuan-Ming Ding, Robert Liang Aug 2015

A Simplified Approach For Negative Skin Friction Calculation Of Special-Shaped Pile Considering Pile-Soil Interaction Under Surcharge, Gang-Qiang Kong, Hang Zhou, Han-Long Liu, Xuan-Ming Ding, Robert Liang

Robert Y. Liang

A simplified approach was proposed to analyze the negative skin friction calculation of special-shaped pile considering pile-soil interaction under surcharge. Based on the concentric cylinder shearing theory, considering the changes of pile shape (such as, taper angle and diameters of pile base, etc.), the load-transfer of special-shaped pile was built. The accuracy of the developed simplified approach was verified by numerical simulation model with the same condition. Then, the influence factors, such as, taper angles, the diameter of pile base, surcharge, and pile-soil interface parameters were analyzed and discussed. The results show that the developed simplified approach can calculate NSF …

Room Temperature Ferromagnetism In Iron Doped Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles, Lydia Johnson Jul 2015

Room Temperature Ferromagnetism In Iron Doped Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles, Lydia Johnson

Lydia Johnson

The purpose of this work was to investigate the impact of crystallite size, surface properties, and transition metal dopants on the magnetic behavior of zinc oxide nanoparticles. To accomplish this, three experimental factors were independently controlled: undoped zinc oxide particle size, reaction solvent, and transition metal dopant concentration. Powders of nanocrystalline Zn1-xFexO were chemically synthesized via two similar hydrolysis methods (solvent either diethylene glycol or ethanol), with dopant concentrations varying from x = 0 to x = 0.10 and the undoped (x = 0) samples synthesized in a range of sizes between 4 - 20 …

Density Functional Theory Study On The Electronic Structure Of N- And P-Type Doped Srtio3 At Anodic Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Conditions, S. Suthirakun, Salai Ammal, G. Xiao, Fanglin Chen, Hans-Conrad Zur Loye, Andreas Heyden

Salai C. Ammal

The electronic conductivity and thermodynamic stability of mixed n-type and p-type doped SrTiO3 have been investigated at anodic solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) conditions using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In particular, constrained ab initio thermodynamic calculations have been performed to evaluate the phase stability and reducibility of various Nb- and Ga-doped SrTiO3 at synthesized and anodic SOFC conditions. The density of states (DOS) of these materials was analyzed to study the effects of n- and p-doping on the electronic conductivity. In agreement with experimental observations, we find that the transformation from 20% Nb-doped Sr-deficient SrTiO3 to a non-Sr-deficient phase …

Correlating Electrical Resistance Change With Mechanical Damage In Woven Sic/Sic Composites: Experiment And Modeling, Thanyawalai Sujidkul, Craig Smith, Zhijun Ma, Gregory Morscher, Zhenhai Xia

Dr. Gregory N. Morscher

Silicon carbide (SiC) fiber-reinforced SiC matrix composites are inherently multifunctional materials. In addition to their primary function as a structural material, the electric properties of the SiC/SiC composites could be used for the sensing and monitoring of in situ damage nucleation and evolution. To detect damage and use that information to further predict the useful life of a particular component, it is necessary to establish the relationship between damage and electrical resistance change. Here, two typical SiC/SiC composites, melt infiltrated (MI), and chemical vapor infiltrated (CVI) woven SiC/SiC composites, were tested to establish the relationship between the electrical response and …

Jason R. Hattrick-Simpers

We discuss techniques for managing and visualizing x-ray diffraction spectrum data for thin film composition spreads which map large fractions of ternary compositional phase diagrams. An in-house x-ray microdiffractometer is used to obtain spectra from over 500 different compositions on an individual spread. The MATLAB software is used to quickly organize the data and create various plots from which one can quickly grasp different information regarding structural and phase changes across the composition spreads. Such exercises are valuable in rapidly assessing the “overall” picture of the structural evolution across phase diagrams before focusing in on specific composition regions for detailed …

The authors have fabricated combinatorial Ni–Ti–Pt ternary metal gate thin film libraries on HfO2 using magnetron co-sputtering to investigate flatband voltage shift (ΔVfb) , work function (Φm) , and leakage current density (JL) variations. A more negative ΔVfb is observed close to the Ti-rich corner than at the Ni- and Pt-rich corners, implying smaller Φm near the Ti-rich corners and higher Φm near the Ni- and Pt-rich corners. In addition, measured JL values can be explained consistently with the observed Φm variations. Combinatorial methodologies prove to be useful in surveying the large compositional space of ternary alloymetal gate electrode systems.
