Behavior Of Concrete Mixes Using Recycled Aggregate Confined With Steel Sections, Latifa Sobhi Kassem, Adnan El-Masri, Nour Webhi

BAU Journal - Science and Technology

Recycled Concrete Aggregate (RAC) is a form of recycled concrete that has been studied for green building for the past 50 years. It can be used to create strong structures, such as seismic retrofitting of earthquake-prone structures. Studies have attempted to experimentally study the effect of using recycled aggregate in concrete, but the literature lacks the use of recycled concrete aggregate rapped with steel rings. This study examines the behavior of circular concrete columns with different percentages of recycled aggregate. It examines the behavior of a column with different percentages of recycled aggregate, one without jacketing, one with partial jacketing, …

Flexural Testing Of Precast Reinforced Concrete Bridge Slabs, Evaluation Of Deterioration And Strengthening Applications, Alyssa Leaman Dec 2022

Flexural Testing Of Precast Reinforced Concrete Bridge Slabs, Evaluation Of Deterioration And Strengthening Applications, Alyssa Leaman

All Theses

This thesis investigates the strength of flat precast concrete slabs that were taken from decommissioned South Carolina bridges. The specimens tested spanned 14 ft (4.3 m) or 15 ft (4.6 m), were 5 ft (1.5 m) or 5.5 ft (1.7 m) wide, and 8.25 in (210 mm) thick. In South Carolina, there are approximately 3000 similar bridges that use these slab members. Testing was conducted to determine the flexural capacity of “typical” slabs and the residual strength of slabs having visible deterioration of both the rebar and the concrete. For the slabs that were load rated below the new standards, …

Strengthening Of Long Rc Columns Using Near Surface Mounted Gfrp Bars, Ahmed Romaih Jan 2022

Strengthening Of Long Rc Columns Using Near Surface Mounted Gfrp Bars, Ahmed Romaih

Theses and Dissertations

Many of the existing reinforced concrete (RC) columns are deficient because of numerous reasons such as increase in service loads, deterioration due to environmental attacks, errors in the design and/or construction phase or in the worst case, accidents. These elements require strengthening or repair. Different methods have been developed over the years for solving different rehabilitation problems. Recently, advanced composites used for external bonding in the form of fabrics or laminates have become an accepted method. The use of Fibre-Reinforced Polymers (FRPs) in this process is a promising technology, especially that these materials are corrosion-free. One of the new techniques …

Review Of Innovative Rehabilitation Techniques For Reinforced Concrete Buildings, Demetrius Karoubas Jan 2022

Review Of Innovative Rehabilitation Techniques For Reinforced Concrete Buildings, Demetrius Karoubas

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Building rehabilitation encompasses the act of repairing damaged structural elements, as well as the upgrading of older buildings to bring them up to modern standards. In recent years, due to the extreme economic and environmental cost of new construction, building rehabilitation is gaining ground as the most viable solution to the problem posed by damaged or substandard buildings. With the constant development of new materials with favorable properties and the improvement of our understanding of earthquakes, new rehabilitation techniques are being developed, improving on the efficiency and effectiveness of older ones. Reinforced Concrete (RC) buildings are a type of building …

Comparison Of Concrete And Steel Jacket Methods For Reinforcing A Concrete Bridge Pier By Numerical And Experimental Studies, Hadi Faghihmaleki Aug 2021

Comparison Of Concrete And Steel Jacket Methods For Reinforcing A Concrete Bridge Pier By Numerical And Experimental Studies, Hadi Faghihmaleki

Makara Journal of Technology

Various rehabilitation and strengthening procedures have been developed in recent decades. A study to determine which methods can be implemented to increase the useful life of the bridge before strengthening must be performed. In this study, the seismic behavior of a reinforced concrete bridge pier with dimension 3.5 × 3.5 m, which was reinforced by two steel and a concrete jacket, was investigated. Nonlinear geometric models and materials were analyzed to estimate the seismic parameters of the pier. Results show an increase in energy absorption, ultimate strength, and ductility for the steel jacket, as well as a greater increase in …

Moment Redistribution In Continuous Rc Beams Top Strengthened With Steel And Cfrp Plates, Amr Ibrahim, Ayman Khalil, Shady Salem, Mahmoud El-Kateb Mar 2020

Moment Redistribution In Continuous Rc Beams Top Strengthened With Steel And Cfrp Plates, Amr Ibrahim, Ayman Khalil, Shady Salem, Mahmoud El-Kateb

Civil Engineering

It is common practice to retrofit continuous reinforced concrete (RC) beams by fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) or steel plates. This can cause a significant amount of moment redistribution (MR) which results in an efficient and economic design when taken into consideration. There is lack in research regarding MR in continuous RC beams when strengthening plates are applied only at the top side at the hogging regions. The main purpose of this paper is to assess MR in continuous RC beams top strengthened with steel and/or carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) plates. In this respect, a nonlinear finite element model was …

Progressive Failure Of Transmission Line Towers Under Different Tornado Wind Fields, Wesam Abdelhamid Mohamed Feb 2020

Progressive Failure Of Transmission Line Towers Under Different Tornado Wind Fields, Wesam Abdelhamid Mohamed

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

High-intensity wind events (downbursts and tornadoes) cause the majority of weather-related transmission line (TL) failures, which detrimentally affect society. This study investigates the progressive failures of single TL towers and TL systems under different F2 tornadoes. Different tornado wind fields are incorporated in a fluid-structure software developed at Western University. Progressive failure analysis is then conducted for four towers under the most critical tornado configurations identified from extensive parametric studies. Moreover, the cost associated with designing TLs to sustain F2 tornadoes is investigated by strengthening the TL towers. Finally, the progressive failure within self-supported TL systems under different tornadoes, and …

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This report presents the use of externally bonded fiber reinforced polymers (FRP) laminates for the flexural strengthening of a concrete bridge. The bridge selected for this project is a two-span simply supported reinforced concrete slab with no transverse steel reinforcement located in Phelps County, MO. The original construction combined with the presence of very rigid parapets caused the formation of a 1-inch wide longitudinal crack, which resulted in the slab to behave as two separate elements. The structural behavior was verified using a finite element model (FEM) of the bridge. The bridge analysis was performed for maximum loads determined in …
