Nonlinear Fastener-Based Modeling Of Cold-Formed Steel Shear Walls Under Lateral Loads, Fani Derveni Jan 2019

Nonlinear Fastener-Based Modeling Of Cold-Formed Steel Shear Walls Under Lateral Loads, Fani Derveni

Structural Engineering Masters Projects

As cold-formed steel (CFS) has increasingly been used in low- and mid-rise construction across United States, it becomes necessary to capture and evaluate its lateral response in both, sub-system/member level and system level. The main lateral resisting system in cold-formed steel construction is shear walls; shear walls are the focus of this work. In particular, the present study aims to shed light on the response of wood sheathed coldformed steel (CFS) shear walls exposed to earthquake events through nonlinear high fidelity fastener-based modeling. The numerical approach is fastener-oriented including nonlinear experimental-determined connector elements for steel-to-sheathing connections, orthotropic oriented strand board …

Performance-Based Analysis Of A Reinforced Concrete Shear Wall Building, Garrett Richard Hagen Jun 2012

Performance-Based Analysis Of A Reinforced Concrete Shear Wall Building, Garrett Richard Hagen

Master's Theses

PERFORMANCE-BASED ANALYSIS OF A REINFORCED CONCRETE SHEAR WALL BUILDING

Garrett Richard Hagen

In this thesis, a special reinforced concrete shear wall building was designed per ASCE 7-05, and then the performance was investigated using the four analysis procedures outlined in ASCE 41-06. The proposed building was planned as a 6-story office building in San Francisco, CA. The structural system consisted of a two-way flat plate and reinforced concrete columns for gravity loads and slender structural walls for seismic loads. The mathematical building models utilized recommendations from ASCE 41-06 and first-principle mechanics. Moment-curvature analysis and fiber cross-section elements were used in …

Experimental And Numerical Development Of Anchor-Jointed Precast Structural Wall System And Optimum Design Of Prestressed Slabs, Mohamed El Semelawy May 2011

Experimental And Numerical Development Of Anchor-Jointed Precast Structural Wall System And Optimum Design Of Prestressed Slabs, Mohamed El Semelawy

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Precast concrete shear walls are used to resist lateral loads in low- to medium-rise buildings. An innovative joining technique is proposed to accelerate construction process and to reduce concrete damage possibility and capital loss during an earthquake event. Panels are jointed using steel anchor bolts, therefore, the system is designated "anchor-jointed precast structural wall system". In this system, anchors are utilized as a structural fuse. Damaged anchors are easily replaced after an earthquake, thus minimizing repair costs and serviceability disruptions. In the first part of this thesis, conceptual development of the system is carried out. A research program of combined …
