Laterally Unsupported Purlins Subjected To Uplift, Roger A. Laboube Dec 1983

Laterally Unsupported Purlins Subjected To Uplift, Roger A. Laboube

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

INTRODUCTION A research study, conducted at Cornell University, provided a theoretical method for evaluating the state of stress for both C- and Z- purlins subjected to wind uplift loading. According to the Cornell analytical method, a Z-purlin has more load carrying capability than a similar C-purlin. Although experimental verification was provided, questions were raised, within the Metal Building Industry, regarding the strength of the C-versus the Z-section. The purpose of the work discussed herein was to develop information regarding the behavior of C- and Z-sections having identical cross-section dimensions. A brief description of the test program, along with a comparison …

Testing Of Steel Roof Deck Construction, Wei-Wen Yu, Lan-Cheng Pan, S. H. Lin Dec 1983

Testing Of Steel Roof Deck Construction, Wei-Wen Yu, Lan-Cheng Pan, S. H. Lin

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

INTRODUCTION In recent years, insulated steel roof deck construction has been widely used in industrial and commercial buildings. The use of roof assembly consisting of 3-in. deep, 22-gage, steel deck is being considered by Rooftex, Inc. of Houston, Texas, for Class 1-60 and Class 1-90 assemblies. At the request of Rooftex, two types of tests were conducted at the University of Missouri-Rolla in July 1983. These tests, which consisted of physical tests of steel roof decks and uplift pressure tests of insulated steel roof deck construction, were conducted to obtain the"necessary data for the approval of the Factory Mutual Research …

Design Of Automotive Structural Components Using High Strength Sheet Steels-Strength Of Beam Webs, Chiravut Santaputra, Wei-Wen Yu

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

I. INTRODUCTION In February 1981, the "Guide for Preliminary Design of Sheet Steel Automotive Structural Components" was issued by American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) for assisting automotive structural designers to achieve weight reduction through the efficient utilization of carbon and high strength steels. 1 These design recommendations were based primarily on the 1968 Edition of the AISI "Specification for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Hembers,,2 but contained the following major differences with regard to the AISI Specification, which was written 'for the design of buildings: 1,4 a. The design expressions presented in the Guide are based on an …

The Influence Of Local Buckling On The Structural Behavior Of Singly-Symmetric Cold-Formed Steel Columns, Gale P. Mulligan, Teoman Peköz Mar 1983

The Influence Of Local Buckling On The Structural Behavior Of Singly-Symmetric Cold-Formed Steel Columns, Gale P. Mulligan, Teoman Peköz

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

INTRODUCTION Cold-formed steel sections are formed from thin steel sheets, of typical thickness 0.015-0.25 inches, by either production cold roll forming or by specialized press braking. As a result, it is possible to produce economically a variety of cross-sectional shapes, which have high strength-to-weight ratios. Some structural applications include primary and secondary load-carrying framing members, such as columns, purlins and wall studs; and shear diaphragms, such as floor and roof decks and wall panels (Yu [1973]). Their design is governed by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) Specification [1980], which is unique because of its generality, e.g., no specific …

Analytical And Experimental Stresses In Concrete Pavements And Unbonded Overlays, Ahmad Jaber Feb 1983

Analytical And Experimental Stresses In Concrete Pavements And Unbonded Overlays, Ahmad Jaber

Dissertations and Theses

The principal objective of this study is to determine the accuracy of calculating stresses in concrete pavements and unbonded overlays under different loading conditions. The computed stresses for the single layer pavements are obtained based on Westergaard theory, the finite-element model (ILLI-SLAB), and the elastic layered model (ELSYM5). For the two-layer unbonded systems, stresses are estimated based on the finite-element theory and the Portland Cement Association design method. The experimental results for the comparison were available from a series of tests done on model scale concrete pavements and unbonded overlays. The results of present investigation show that the computed stresses …

Design Of Automotive Structural Components Using High Strength Sheet Steels, Wei-Wen Yu, Chiravut Santaputra, M. Brad Parks

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

INTRODUCTION In recent years, automobile manufacturers have introduced new lines of lighter vehicles for the purpose of achieving fuel economy. To construct such vehicles, formable and weldable, high strength, sheet steels with yield points ranging up to 140 ksi have been used for parts and structural components. 1.1-1.7 Because various types of newer high strength sheet steels are now available for engineers to reduce car weight and because these steels permit the use of existing production equipment with virtually no change in techniques or production rates, the design criteria for efficient and economical use of these high strength steels in …

Secondary Stresses In Bowstring Timber Trusses, John F. Bradford Jan 1983

Secondary Stresses In Bowstring Timber Trusses, John F. Bradford

Dissertations and Theses

This study was undertaken in order to determine analytically the magnitude of the secondary (i.e., joint deflection induced) moments in the continuous glued-laminated chords of bowstring timber trusses. Traditionally, these moments have been assumed to be small and therefore neglected. The American Institute of Timber Construction makes no mention of these moments in their recommended design procedure.

A Study Of Single Angle Compression Members, James Robert Callaway Jan 1983

A Study Of Single Angle Compression Members, James Robert Callaway

Dissertations and Theses

A study was undertaken to investigate the compressive capacity of a specific group of single angle members.

A review of existing literature and techniques was presented. Laboratory compression tests were performed on 22 angle members of four different sizes and two different lengths. Additional tests were performed to determine the yield strength of the material. The results, normalized with respect to the yield stress, were tabulated and discussed.

Two existing analytic models were used to attempt to predict the ultimate capacity of the test members. The first, an elastic method, was based upon the AISC combined stress equation. The second, …
