Evaluating The Level Of Harmonic Distortion In A Typical Distribution Feeder, Wessen S. Bogale May 2015

Evaluating The Level Of Harmonic Distortion In A Typical Distribution Feeder, Wessen S. Bogale

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Steady-state analysis of electrical power systems is largely based on linear and sinusoidal AC circuits which allow the concept of impedance, phasors and well-defined power quantities (i.e., real, reactive and apparent powers). In reality, however, the electric load which was once composed of linear elements (e.g., induction motors, incandescent lighting, etc …) is becoming more and more nonlinear due to the wide-spread use of electronic components such as fluorescent lighting and variable-frequency drives that power the majority of electric motors. As a consequence, the current drawn by such devices is often distorted, thus containing a number of high frequency harmonics …

Power Management Strategies For A Wind Energy Source In An Isolated Microgrid And Grid Connected System, Devbratta Thakur Apr 2015

Power Management Strategies For A Wind Energy Source In An Isolated Microgrid And Grid Connected System, Devbratta Thakur

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis focuses on the development of power management control strategies for a direct drive permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) based variable speed wind turbine (VSWT). Two modes of operation have been considered: (1) isolated/islanded mode, and (2) grid-connected mode.

In the isolated/islanded mode, the system requires additional energy sources and sinks to counterbalance the intermittent nature of the wind. Thus, battery energy storage and photovoltaic (PV) systems have been integrated with the wind turbine to form a microgrid with hybrid energy sources. For the wind/battery hybrid system, several energy management and control issues have been addressed, such as DC …

Data Cleaning In The Energy Domain, Hermine Nathalie Akouemo Kengmo Kenfack

Dissertations (1934 -)

This dissertation addresses the problem of data cleaning in the energy domain, especially for natural gas and electric time series. The detection and imputation of anomalies improves the performance of forecasting models necessary to lower purchasing and storage costs for utilities and plan for peak energy loads or distribution shortages. There are various types of anomalies, each induced by diverse causes and sources depending on the field of study. The definition of false positives also depends on the context. The analysis is focused on energy data because of the availability of data and information to make a theoretical and practical …

Vortex Identification In The Wake Of A Wind Turbine Array, Aleksandr Sergeyevich Aseyev

Dissertations and Theses

Vortex identification techniques are used to analyze the flow structure in a 4 x 3 array of scale model wind turbines. Q-criterion, Δ-criterion, and λ2-criterion are applied to Particle Image Velocimetry data gathered fore and aft of the last row centerline turbine. Q-criterion and λ2-criterion provide a clear indication of regions where vortical activity exists while the Δ-criterion does not. Galilean decomposition, Reynolds decomposition, vorticity, and swirling strength are used to further understand the location and behavior of the vortices. The techniques identify and display the high magnitude vortices in high shear zones resulting from the …

Nanogrid Electrical Design And Analysis, Phillip Phung Mar 2015

Nanogrid Electrical Design And Analysis, Phillip Phung

Electrical Engineering

Power plant generators have quality protection over long-range transmission, but localized generation interacts with multiple power sources, and needs maintenance to ensure grid safety. Localized and distributed generation must solve these issues to remain viable economically and efficiently in power industries. Cal Poly’s Building 20 provides on-campus location to interconnect renewable generation with interconnection disconnect capabilities.

Cal Poly’s grid includes three localized generators flowing through the Cal Poly substation. Unlike other universities which use power from utilities across distant transmission lines, Cal Poly generates energy using onsite generators. Research including additional possible sites of power generation helps determine the effects …

Three-Phase Generation Using Reactive Networks, Tattiana Karina Coleman Davenport Mar 2015

Three-Phase Generation Using Reactive Networks, Tattiana Karina Coleman Davenport

Master's Theses

Household appliances utilize single-phase motors to perform everyday jobs whether it is to run a fan in an air conditioner or the compressor in a refrigerator. With the movement of the world going “green” and trying to make everything more efficient, it is a logical step to start with the items that we use every day. This can be done by replacing single-phase motors with three-phase motors in household appliances. Three-phase motors are 14% more efficient than single-phase motors when running at full load and typically cost less over a large range of sizes [1]. One major downside of incorporating …

Microgrid Optimal Scheduling Considering Impact Of High Penetration Wind Generation, Abdulaziz Furreh Alanazi Mar 2015

Microgrid Optimal Scheduling Considering Impact Of High Penetration Wind Generation, Abdulaziz Furreh Alanazi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this thesis is to study the impact of high penetration wind energy in economic and reliable operation of microgrids. Wind power is variable, i.e., constantly changing, and nondispatchable, i.e., cannot be controlled by the microgrid controller. Thus an accurate forecasting of wind power is an essential task in order to study its impacts in microgrid operation. Two commonly used forecasting methods including Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) have been used in this thesis to improve the wind power forecasting. The forecasting error is calculated using a Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) and …

Smart Distributed Generation Systems Using Improved Islanding Detection And Event Classification, Bikiran Guha Jan 2015

Smart Distributed Generation Systems Using Improved Islanding Detection And Event Classification, Bikiran Guha

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Distributed Generation (DG) sources have become an integral part of modern decentralized power systems. However, the interconnection of DG systems to the power grid can present several operational challenges. One such major challenge is islanding detection. Islanding occurs when a DG system is disconnected from the rest of the power grid. Islanding can present serious safety hazards and therefore an accurate and fast islanding detection technique is mandated by DG interconnection standards such as IEEE 1547 and UL 1741. Conventional islanding detection techniques passively monitor the local power system parameters such as voltage and frequency to detect islanding. These techniques …

Comparing The Efficiency Of Heterogeneous And Homogeneous Data Center Workloads, Brandon Kimmons Jan 2015

Comparing The Efficiency Of Heterogeneous And Homogeneous Data Center Workloads, Brandon Kimmons

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Abstract

Information Technology, as an industry, is growing very quickly to keep pace with increased data storage and computing needs. Data growth, if not planned or managed correctly, can have larger efficiency implications on your data center as a whole. The long term reduction in efficiency will increase costs over time and increase operational overhead. Similarly, increases in processor efficiency have led to increased system density in data centers. This can increase cost and operational overhead in your data center infrastructure.

This paper proposes the idea that balanced data center workloads are more efficient in comparison to similar levels of …

Synchrophasor Assisted Efficient Fault Location Techniques In An Active Distribution Network, Anil Khanal Jan 2015

Synchrophasor Assisted Efficient Fault Location Techniques In An Active Distribution Network, Anil Khanal

Dissertations

Reliability of an electrical system can be improved by an efficient fault location identification for the fast repair and remedial actions. This scenario changes when there are large penetrations of distributed generation (DG) which makes the distribution system an active distribution system. An efficient use of synchrophasors in the distribution network is studied with bidirectional power flow, harmonics and low angle difference consideration which are not prevalent in a transmission network. A synchrophasor estimation algorithm for the P class PMU is developed and applied to identify efficient fault location. A fault location technique using two ended synchronized measurement is derived …

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

A statistical based verification and validation process is applied to the transient modeling of a shell and tube heat exchanger. A generic model of a heat exchanger was developed based on first principles as a sub-system of a larger thermal system model. This model was originally created without any experimental data, as it was not readily available. To provide the data necessary to apply the validation process, a thermal emulator was designed and built that allowed control of all system inputs to the heat exchanger, while also providing the instrumentation to record all required data. A wide test matrix was …

A New Islanding Detection Method Based On Wavelet-Transform And Ann For Inverter Assisted Distributed Generator, Zhengyuan Guan Jan 2015

A New Islanding Detection Method Based On Wavelet-Transform And Ann For Inverter Assisted Distributed Generator, Zhengyuan Guan

Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering

Nowadays islanding has become a big issue with the increasing use of distributed generators in power system. In order to effectively detect islanding after DG disconnects from main source, author first studied two passive islanding methods in this thesis: THD&VU method and wavelet-transform method. Compared with other passive methods, each of them has small non-detection zone, but both of them are based on the threshold limit, which is very hard to set. What’s more, when these two methods were applied to practical signals distorted with noise, they performed worse than anticipated.

Thus, a new composite intelligent based method is presented …

Single Phase Multilevel Inverter For Grid-Tied Photovoltaic Systems, Martin Edward Prichard Jan 2015

Single Phase Multilevel Inverter For Grid-Tied Photovoltaic Systems, Martin Edward Prichard

Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering

Multilevel inverters offer many well-known advantages for use in high-voltage and high-power applications, but they are also well suited for low-power applications. A single phase inverter is developed in this paper to deliver power from a residential-scale system of Photovoltaic panels to the utility grid. The single-stage inverter implements a novel control technique for the reversing voltage topology to produce a stepped output waveform. This approach increases the granularity of control over the PV systems, modularizing key components of the inverter and allowing the inverter to extract the maximum power from the systems. The adaptive controller minimizes harmonic distortion in …

Stargrazer One: A New Architecture For Distributed Maximum Power Point Tracking Of Solar Photovoltaic Sources, Edgard Munoz-Coreas

Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering

The yield from a solar photovoltaic (PV) source is dependent on factors such as light and temperature. A control system called a maximum power point tracker (MPPT) ensures that the yield from a solar PV source is maximized in spite of these factors. This thesis presents a novel implementation of a perturb and observe (PO) MPPT.

The implementation uses a switched capacitor step down converter and a custom digital circuit implementation of the PO algorithm. Working in tandem, the switched capacitor step down converter and the custom digital circuit implementation were able to successfully track the maximum power point of …

Average-Value Modeling Of Hysteresis Current Control In Power Electronics, Hanling Chen Jan 2015

Average-Value Modeling Of Hysteresis Current Control In Power Electronics, Hanling Chen

Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering

Hysteresis current control has been widely used in power electronics with the advantages of fast dynamic response under parameter, line and load variation and ensured stability. However, a main disadvantage of hysteresis current control is the uncertain and varying switching frequency which makes it difficult to form an average-value model. The changing switching frequency and unspecified switching duty cycle make conventional average-value models based on PWM control difficult to apply directly to converters that are controlled by hysteresis current control.

In this work, a new method for average-value modeling of hysteresis current control in boost converters, three-phase inverters, and brushless …

Stand-Alone Solar-Pv Hydrogen Energy Systems Incorporating Reverse Osmosis, Daniel Clarke Jan 2015

Stand-Alone Solar-Pv Hydrogen Energy Systems Incorporating Reverse Osmosis, Daniel Clarke

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The world’s increasing energy demand means the rate at which fossil fuels are consumed has increased resulting in greater carbon dioxide emissions. For many small (marginalised) or coastal communities, access to potable water is limited alongside good availability of renewable energy sources (solar or wind). One solution is to utilise small-scale renewably powered stand-alone energy systems to help supply power for everyday utilities and to operate desalination systems serving potable water (drinking) needs reducing diesel generator dependence. In such systems, on-site water production is essential so as to service electrolysis for hydrogen generation for Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cells. …

Optimisation Of Stand-Alone Hydrogen-Based Renewable Energy Systems Using Intelligent Techniques, Adel Brka Jan 2015

Optimisation Of Stand-Alone Hydrogen-Based Renewable Energy Systems Using Intelligent Techniques, Adel Brka

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Wind and solar irradiance are promising renewable alternatives to fossil fuels due to their availability and topological advantages for local power generation. However, their intermittent and unpredictable nature limits their integration into energy markets. Fortunately, these disadvantages can be partially overcome by using them in combination with energy storage and back-up units. However, the increased complexity of such systems relative to single energy systems makes an optimal sizing method and appropriate Power Management Strategy (PMS) research priorities.

This thesis contributes to the design and integration of stand-alone hybrid renewable energy systems by proposing methodologies to optimise the sizing and operation …
