The paper presents experimental studies on the choice of an internal standard in order to correction the matrix effect that occurs when determining uranium in human urine by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Monoelemental standard solutions of Sc-45, Rh-103, In-115, Ir-193, Th-232 were used as internal standards. The levels of the decrease in the sensitivity of analytical signals of internal standards and uranium spikes under the influence of the matrix effect were determined. The ratio of the measured concentration of internal standards in the background solution of 5% nitric acid and in the matrix of the urine simulator was found …

The main objective of current study is to assess the dose burden and health status of workers at the uranium processing hydrometallurgical plant in order to develop measures aimed at reducing their incidence. This article presents the results of radiation monitoring and data on the health status of workers at the hydrometallurgical plant of the Stepnogorsk Mining and Chemical Combine (SMCC). The data of the accumulated effective dose for the entire length of service, as well as data on the incidence rate for the period 2013-2019, obtained from the base of the Industrial Radiation and Epidemiological Register, have been analyzed. …

Experiments in preparation for search for uranium ternary fission by means of nuclear track emulsion are summarized. The study will be focused on the possible involvement of the unstable nucleus8Be in the suggested scenario of the collinear tri-partition in the fission.

Doube-Pulse Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy Of Multi-Element Sample Containing Low- And High-Z Analytes, Patrick J. Skrodzki, Jason R. Becker, Prasoon K. Diwakar Ph. D., Sivanandan S. Harilal Ph. D., Ahmed Hassanein Ph. D. Aug 2014

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is a portable, remote, non-invasive analytical technique which effectively distinguishes neutral and ionic species for a range of low- to high-Z elements in a multi-element target. Subsequently, LIBS holds potential in special nuclear material (SNM) sensing and nuclear forensics requiring minimal sample preparation and detecting isotopic shifts which allows for differentiation in SNM (namely U) enrichment levels. Feasible applications include not only nonproliferation and homeland security but also nuclear fuel prospecting and industrial safeguard endorsement. Elements of higher mass with complex atomic structures, such as U, however, result in crowded emission spectra with LIBS, and characteristic …

Design Concepts And Process Analysis For Transmuter Fuel Manufacturing: Quarterly Progress Report #2, Jamil M. Renno, Georg F. Mauer Apr 2005

Design Concepts And Process Analysis For Transmuter Fuel Manufacturing: Quarterly Progress Report #2, Jamil M. Renno, Georg F. Mauer

Fuels Campaign (TRP)

This report discusses mainly the fabrication of inert matrix fuels. There are three fabrication routes to obtain inert matrix fuels (IMF). IMF is a dispersion-type fuel in which the actinide phase is distributed as a separate phase in a so called inert matrix. This concept has evolved as one of the most promising in the field of transmutation. The following section discusses each manufacturing route aside.

The atomic structure of iron phosphate glasses containing uranium has been studied by complementary neutron and x-ray scattering techniques. by combining x-ray and neutron structure factors, detailed information about different pair interactions has been obtained. Most of the basic structural features such as coordination numbers and O-O and P-O distances in uranium containing glasses are the same as those in the base glass of batch composition 40Fe2O3-60P2O5 (mol %). However, the Fe-O distances change slightly with the addition of uranium. The observed structural parameters support a structural model in which the waste elements occupy voids in the Fe-O-P network, hence, …
