Na-Doped Zno Uv Filters With Reduced Photocatalytic Activity For Sunscreen Applications, Rafid Abdlateef Mueen, Michael L. F Lerch, Zhenxiang Cheng, Konstantin K. Konstantinov

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Due to its physical and chemical stability in addition to its transparency in the visible region with ultraviolet protective activity, ZnO can be used in sunscreen applications. In our article, Na-doped zinc oxide nanoparticles were prepared in different concentrations by sol–gel and solvothermal techniques to reduce their photocatalytic activity. The photocatalytic activity of the doped samples was suppressed effectively at a concentration of 0.03 at% Na doping up to 90% by conducting the sol–gel process rather than the solvothermal process which resulted in about 70% photocatalytic reduction in a period of time from (0–30 min) when exposed to ultraviolet and …

Collective Directional Locking Of Colloidal Monolayers On A Periodic Substrate, Ralph Stoop, Arthur Straube, Tom H. Johansen, Pietro Tierno Jan 2020

Collective Directional Locking Of Colloidal Monolayers On A Periodic Substrate, Ralph Stoop, Arthur Straube, Tom H. Johansen, Pietro Tierno

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

We investigate the directional locking effects that arise when a monolayer of paramagnetic colloidal particles is driven across a triangular lattice of magnetic bubbles. We use an external rotating magnetic field to generate a two-dimensional traveling wave ratchet forcing the transport of particles along a direction that intersects two crystallographic axes of the lattice. We find that, while single particles show no preferred direction, collective effects induce transversal current and directional locking at high density via a spontaneous symmetry breaking. The colloidal current may be polarized via an additional bias field that makes one transport direction energetically preferred.

© 2020 American Physical Society. Magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) are a key technology in modern spintronics because they are the basis of read-heads of modern hard disk drives, nonvolatile magnetic random access memories, and sensor applications. In this paper, we demonstrate that tunneling magnetoresistance can influence terahertz (THz) wave propagation through a MTJ. In particular, various magnetic configurations between parallel state and antiparallel state of the magnetizations of the ferromagnetic layers in the MTJ have the effect of changing the conductivity, making a functional modulation of the propagating THz electromagnetic fields. Operating in the THz frequency range, a maximal modulation …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

The strategy of inducing interlayer anionic ligands in 2D MoS1.5Se0.5 nanosheets is employed to consolidate the interlayer band gap and optimize the electronic structure for the potassium ion battery. It combines complementary advantages from two kinds of anionic ligands with high conductivity and good affinity with potassium ions. The potassium ion diffusion rate is accelerated as well by an optimized lower energy barrier for ion diffusion pathways, with the formation of highly reversible KMo3Se3 crystal other than K0.4MoS2/K2MoS4, which encounters a much slower electro/ion diffusion rate …

Leasing Or Repositioning Empty Containers? Determining The Time-Varying Guide Leasing Prices For Decision Making, Hao Hu, Bo Du, Marcella Bernardo

SMART Infrastructure Facility - Papers

Repositioning empty container and leasing container from leasing company are mainly the outcomes of imbalance in trade flows. How to make decision on repositioning or leasing remains a challenge in running shipping service efficiently and economically. To address such challenge, this study aims to derive guide leasing prices. If the realistic leasing price is lower than the guide price, shipping companies should consider leasing containers from leasing company; otherwise repositioning empty container is a more economical option. Both time-varying short-term and long-term guide leasing prices are determined in a shipping network with consideration of empty container devanning and laden container …

A Case Study Of Wifi Sniffing Performance Evaluation, Yan Li, Johan Barthelemy, Shuai Sun, Pascal Perez, Bill Moran

SMART Infrastructure Facility - Papers

Mobile devices regularly broadcast WiFi probe requests in order to discover available proximal WiFi access points for connection. A probe request, sent automatically in the active scanning mode, consisting of the MAC address of the device expresses an advertisement of its presence. A real-time wireless sniffing system is able to sense WiFi packets and analyse wireless traffic. This provides an opportunity to obtain insights into the interaction between the humans carrying the mobile devices and the environment. Susceptibility to loss of the wireless data transmission is an important limitation on this idea, and this is complicated by the lack of …

2020 Iron sulfides draw much attention as electrode candidates for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to the rich chemical stoichiometries and high capacity. However, they usually exhibit poor cycling performance due to the large volume change during sodiation/desodiation process. In this work, we embed Fe7S8 nanoparticles into sulfur, nitrogen-doped carbon (S/N-C) nanofibers through electrospinning/sulfurization processes. The heteroatom doped carbon matrixes could effectively protect the Fe7S8 from structural collapse, obtaining a stable cycling performance. Moreover, the conductive matrixes with 1D structure can facilitate the diffusion of electrons, leading to good rate capability. As results, the as-designed Fe7S8@S/N-C nanofibers present a discharge capacity …

2020 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. A novel polyphosphate lubricant was used and evaluated during hot (ferrite) rolling of an interstitial-free (IF) steel. The texture evolution of these rolled IF steels have been examined by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) measurements. The polyphosphate lubricant shows an improved lubrication performance in terms of the texture optimization compared with lubricating oil and with unlubricated conditions. The γ-fiber texture is enhanced, and less shear texture is produced. This microstructure is responsible for enhanced drawability of ferrite rolled IF steels. The very high thermal stability of the …

Liposomes are extensively used in drug delivery, while alginates are widely used in tissue engineering. However, liposomes are usually thermally unstable and drug-leaking when in liquids, while the drug carriers made of alginates show low loading capacities when used for drug delivery. Herein, we developed a type of thermo-responsible liposome-alginate composite hydrogel (TSPMAH) by grafting thermo-responsive liposomes onto alginates by using Ca2+ mediated bonding between the phosphatidic serine (PS) in the liposome membrane and the alginate. The temperature-sensitivity of the liposomes was actualized by using phospholipids comprising dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) and PS and the liposomes were prepared by a thin-film dispersion …

The band topology in condensed matter has attracted widespread attention in recent years. Due to the band inversion, topological nodal line semimetals (TNLSs) have band crossing points (BCPs) around the Fermi level, forming a nodal line. In this work, by means of first-principles, we observe that the synthesized NaAlGe intermetallic compound with anti-PbFCl type structure is a TNLS with four NLs in the kz = 0 and kz = π planes. All these NLs in NaAlGe exist around the Fermi level, and what is more, these NLs do not overlap with other bands. The exotic drum-head-like surface states can be …

Scaling Behavior Of Quasi-One-Dimensional Vortex Avalanches In Superconducting Films, A Qviller, T Qureishy, Y Xu, H Suo, P Mozhaev, J Hansen, J Vestgården, Tom H. Johansen, Pavlo Mikheenko

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Scaling behaviour of dynamically driven vortex avalanches in superconducting YBa2Cu3O7-δ films deposited on tilted crystalline substrates has been observed using quantitative magneto-optical imaging. Two films with different tilt angles are characterized by the probability distributions of avalanche size in terms of the number of moving vortices. It is found in both samples that these distributions follow power-laws over up to three decades, and have exponents ranging between 1.0 and 1.4. The distributions also show clear finite-size scaling, when the system size is defined by the depth of the flux penetration front - a signature of self-organized criticality. A scaling relation …

In RFeO3, magnetic R3+ undergo a spontaneous spin reorientation in a temperature range determined by R (rare earth), where the magnetic structure changes from Γ2 to Γ4. The b-axis component of their magnetic moment, Mb, is reported in numerous neutron diffraction studies to remain zero at all temperatures. More sensitive magnetometer measurements reveal a small non-zero Mb, which is minute above ∼200 K. Mb increases with cooling and reaches values of ∼10-3 μB/f.u. at temperatures within or below …
