This thesis describes the particle trapping mechanism in blood flow in different arterial bifurcation models. For validation of CFD calculations, a T-junction model and a Y-junction model are analyzed. In both the models, there is one inlet pipe with two outlet pipes creating a symmetric bifurcation at some angle from the centerline of the inlet pipe. Naiver-Stokes (RANS) equations are solved for single phase laminar flow using the commercial CFD software ANSYS Fluent. Fracture Toughness Improvement Of ����� Ceramics By Grain Size Control And Ductile Phase Reinforcement, Kesong Wang

This study used grain size control and ductile phase reinforcement to improve fracture toughness of ����� ceramics. Alpha alumina particles of 100 nm, 0.5-1 micrometers, and 10 micrometers were coated with 1-5 nm nickel by electroless nickel plating (ENP). The coated powders were consolidated at 1200℃-1500℃ by spark plasma sintering (SPS). The sintered samples were annealed at 1100 oC for 1.5 hours and 10 hours to determine the effect of post sintering annealing on hardness and fracture toughness. Separation, isolation, and enrichment of targeted nano- and microparticles are critical to a variety of biomedical applications from clinical research (development of therapeutics and diagnostics) to fundamental investigations that require concentration of specific cells from culture, separation of target species from heterogenous mixtures, or controlled perturbation of cells and microorganisms to determine their response to stimuli. Numerous techniques are available for bench-scale and medical settings; however, these traditional approaches are often labor intensive, time-consuming, costly, and/or require modification of the target.
