An Analysis Of The Heating And Densification Process During Rotational Molding Of A Thermoplastic Powder In A Uniaxially Rotating Cylindrical Cavity, Floyd Steven Ribe

Dissertations

This dissertation presents the results of an experimental and theoretical investigation of the heating and densification portion of the rotational molding process in a uniaxial, cylindrical mold.

A thorough literature survey is included which reviewed past analysis of the rotational molding process and other areas that assisted in understanding of the process.

The results presented in this dissertation included an analysis of the densification process by use of Scanning Electronic Microscope (SEM) photography producing intermediate correlations between the physical properties of the densifying material and neck radius of adjacent coalescing spheres. In addition, a hybrid experimental procedure coupled with a …

Flexible Engineering Software: An Integrated Workstation Approach To Finite Element Analysis, Brant Arnold Ross Apr 1985

Flexible Engineering Software: An Integrated Workstation Approach To Finite Element Analysis, Brant Arnold Ross

Theses and Dissertations

One obstacle preventing more engineers from using finite element analysis (FEA) is the difficulty of transferring data between steps in the modeling process. A Fortran computer program, Rosetta.BYU, has been developed to open data paths between finite element preprocessors (mesh generators) and finite element analysis programs, using a custom data structure. It accepts neutral data files, Version 2.0 IGES data files, and Movie.BYU files for input/output. An application of Rosetta is described. A general workstation manager program, Davinci.BYU, is reviewed that provides a support layer between the engineer and the operating system, organizes software and data files, and facilitates on-line …

Unsteady Transonic Flow Over Slender Bodies, Cevdet Aydun Apr 1985

Unsteady Transonic Flow Over Slender Bodies, Cevdet Aydun

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The unsteady transonic small disturbance equation for an oscillating slender body is obtained from the full potential equation in cylindrical coordinates by means of a perturbation analysis. The time-dependent body-boundary condition is reduced into a simpler form by matching the outer and inner flows. Also, a time-dependent pressure coefficient over the slender body is derived by means of a matching principle. The simplified form of the body-boundary condition is incorporated into the difference equations at the body axis. This application allows use of the cylindrical coordinate system for the problem. By prescribing several different body-boundary conditions, various modes of body …

Noninvasive Detection Of Arterial Occlusive Disease: A Theoretical And Model Study, Lauren I. Stratouly, William W. Durgin, Frederick A. Anderson Jr., H. Brownell Wheeler

Office of the Provost Scholarship

To develop a noninvasive method of detecting arterial occlusive disease, pulse waveforms were recorded at two locations on the lower extremities of young normal volunteers and patients with arteriographically confirmed arterial occlusive disease. Pulses were monitored using impedance plethysmography at the knee· and the iliac regions. The frequency spectra of the abnormal iliac waveforms contained 4-5 harmonics as compared to the 2-3 harmonics present in normals'. It was hypothesized that the occurrence of high frequencies resulted from pulse wave interactions with diseased portions of the vessel. This paper will present the results of a theoretical and experimental model developed to …

Window Treatment For Energy Conservation, Florida Solar Energy Center, Ross Mccluney Jan 1985

Window Treatment For Energy Conservation, Florida Solar Energy Center, Ross Mccluney

FSEC Energy Research Center®

This Energy Note gives the non-technical reader a clear look at windows - how to get the most from them in cooling, heating, ventilating and illuminating the home. Although most of the points are applicable anywhere in the country, emphasis is on summer solar heat gain experienced in buildings in Florida. Two common features of Southern building style are large window areas to let the light and breezes in, and shading devices or window films to keep the hot sunshine out. This energy note addresses design guidelines and strategies as well as shading devices and window films for existing windows.

Microcomputer Based Digital Image Processing System Developed To Count And Size Laser-Generated Small Particle Images, K. D. Ahlers, D. R. Alexander Jan 1985

Microcomputer Based Digital Image Processing System Developed To Count And Size Laser-Generated Small Particle Images, K. D. Ahlers, D. R. Alexander

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

A microcomputer-based digital image processing system has been developed to count and size laser-generated small particle images. Processing rates of 5 to 600 frames per minute were achieved by utilizing a real-time digital image processor. Particles from 7 to 700 µm in the plane of focus were counted and sized. A major emphasis in this work was to determine the basic problems and limitations involved with using a digital image processing scheme to accurately size particles. Areas that were investigated include the effect of the threshold level on measured particle size, particle boundary diffraction gray-level gradients, and geometric nonlinearities introduced …

Transient Flow Inverse Study Calculation Of Unsaturated Permeability Of Wood, Farid Piroozmandi Jan 1985

Transient Flow Inverse Study Calculation Of Unsaturated Permeability Of Wood, Farid Piroozmandi

Dissertations and Theses

One of the major processes in lumber industry is wood drying. This process consumes large amounts of energy and capital, and due to the length of time it takes, it acts as a governing factor in lumber production levels. Development of improvements in processes and equipment used in wood drying can be expedited through computer simulation of various drying procedures. These numerical simulations depend on the accuracy of numerical models representing wood transport properties, including functional dependency of liquid permeability through wood with respect to local saturation level. Data available in the literature mainly represent wood permeability properties at fully …

Final Design Report Of The Design Of A Climate Controlled Sleeping Chamber For Infants And Toddlers, Jennifer Stenger Stevens Jan 1985

Final Design Report Of The Design Of A Climate Controlled Sleeping Chamber For Infants And Toddlers, Jennifer Stenger Stevens

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

A climate controlled sleeping chamber, or air crib, for infants and toddlers is an alternative sleeping medium to the conventional crib. It is a chamber that is ventilated with air that is temperature and humidity controlled to provide an optimum sleeping environment for young children, ages 0 to 2 years. Its purpose is to enhance the psychological and physiological development of young children. Because it is easier to heat a small chamber than larger living quarters, the air crib also has economic advantages.

The design o climate controlled sleeping chamber must meet some minimum requirements. The system must provide an …

Plasma Polymerization Investigated By The Substrate Temperature Dependence., H. Yasuda, Cheng Wang Jan 1985

Plasma Polymerization Investigated By The Substrate Temperature Dependence., H. Yasuda, Cheng Wang

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

In the reported experiments, plasma polymerization of tetrafluoroethylene (TFE), perfluoro-2-butyl-tetrahydrofuran (PFBTHF), ethylene, and styrene were investigated in various combinations of monomer flow rates and discharge wattages for the substrate temperature range of minus 50 to 80 degree C. The polymer deposition rates can be generally expressed by k//o equals Ae** minus **b**t, where k//o is the specific deposition rate given by k//o equals (deposition rate)/(mass flow rate of monomer), A is the preexponential factor representing the extrapolated value of k//o at zero absolute temperature, and b is the temperature-dependence coefficient. It was found that the value of b is not …
