Design And Evaluation Of A Unique Weighted-Sum-Based Anger Camera, Matthew W. Seals May 2022

Design And Evaluation Of A Unique Weighted-Sum-Based Anger Camera, Matthew W. Seals

Masters Theses

Anger camera imaging technology has become widely popular for neutron diffraction imaging due to recent shortages in Helium-3 (He-3). Research into neutron diffraction optimized Anger camera by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) detectors group has provided an alternative to He-3 Tube-based detectors with a high-resolution Anger camera. However, the cost of these high-resolution Anger camera technology can make it less attractive than He-3 tubes when a large Field of View (FOV) is desired. Currently, there is a need for a lower-cost alternative to this high-resolution anger camera. Further applications for Anger camera have become of interest with the advent …

Equations Of State For Warm Dense Carbon From Quantum Espresso, Derek J. Schauss Jan 2021

Equations Of State For Warm Dense Carbon From Quantum Espresso, Derek J. Schauss

Theses and Dissertations

Warm dense plasma is the matter that exists, roughly, in the range of 10,000 to 10,000,000 Kelvin and has solid-like densities, typically between 0.1 and 10 grams per centimeter. Warm dense fluids like hydrogen, helium, and carbon are believed to make up the interiors of many planets, white dwarfs, and other stars in our universe. The existence of warm dense matter (WDM) on Earth, however, is very rare, as it can only be created with high-energy sources like a nuclear explosion. In such an event, theoretical and computational models that accurately predict the response of certain materials are thus very …

The Effect Of Flinak Molten Salt Corrosion On The Hardness Of Hastelloy N, David Kok Apr 2019

The Effect Of Flinak Molten Salt Corrosion On The Hardness Of Hastelloy N, David Kok

Scholar Week 2016 - present

The Molten Salt Reactor (MSR) has been identified as a promising candidate to replace aging nuclear reactors around the world. However, a suitable combination of molten salt and container material needs to be found in order to reduce the potential for corrosion in the MSR before it can be considered commercially viable. FLiNaK molten salt and the nickel-based alloy Hastelloy N have been identified as prime candidates for this function, but the severity of FLiNaK corrosion in Hastelloy N requires additional study before this combination can be used in the operation of a MSR. In this study, Hastelloy N samples …

The Effect Of Flinak Molten Salt Corrosion On The Hardness Of Hastelloy N, David Kok Jan 2019

The Effect Of Flinak Molten Salt Corrosion On The Hardness Of Hastelloy N, David Kok

Honors Program Projects

The desire to reduce pollution caused by electricity production has led to a call for the replacement of conventional fossil fuel power plants. In order to fulfill this goal, a large amount of new nuclear reactors is required, and this provides the opportunity to put new and innovative reactor designs into production. The Molten Salt Reactor (MSR) is one of the most promising concepts, but a suitable combination of molten salt and container material needs to be found to reduce the potential for corrosion before the concept can be put into production. FLiNaK molten salt and the nickel-based alloy Hastelloy …

Compression Testing And Failure Modes Of Steel-Concrete Composite (Sc) Structures For Nuclear Containment, Patrick Michael Wanamaker, Amit H. Varma Oct 2013

Compression Testing And Failure Modes Of Steel-Concrete Composite (Sc) Structures For Nuclear Containment, Patrick Michael Wanamaker, Amit H. Varma

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Although being able to provide much cleaner power than burning coal and other fossil fuels, nuclear power plants are still a tough sell to the general public due to their history of being spontaneously dangerous. The containment structures surrounding these nuclear plants, however, can play a huge role in reducing the risks associated with them. Relatively new designs for these containment assemblies, known as SC (steel-concrete composite) structures, aim to increase the strength and durability of the containment facilities while keeping costs down. By varying the spacing between shear studs, the ratio of concrete to steel, and the ratio of …

Simulations Of Ti-Y-O Nanoclusters In Ferritic Alloys, Natalie Browning Camilli May 2013

Simulations Of Ti-Y-O Nanoclusters In Ferritic Alloys, Natalie Browning Camilli

Masters Theses

Nanostructured ferritic alloys possess high strength and resistance to radiation effects due to the presence of nanoprecipitates. Though nanostructured ferritic alloys have desirable mechanical properties, the exact composition and structure of the nanoprecipitates is unknown; thus, atomistic simulations involving the formation of nanoclusters give insight as to their structure. This thesis focuses on the structure, formation and radiation stability of Ti-Y-O [titanium-yttrium-oxygen] nanoclusters in iron. The activation energies for diffusion and the diffusion coefficients of oxygen interstitial atoms in iron are determined. The binding energies of various combinations of oxygen interstitial atoms and iron vacancies are also tabulated. Thermodynamic formation …

Long-Term Effects Of Neutron Absorber And Fuel Matrix Corrosion On Criticality, William Culbreth, P. Zielinski May 1994

Long-Term Effects Of Neutron Absorber And Fuel Matrix Corrosion On Criticality, William Culbreth, P. Zielinski

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research

Proposed waste package designs will require the addition of neutron absorbing material to prevent the possibility of a sustained chain reaction occurring in the fuel in the event of water intrusion. Due to the low corrosion rates of the fuel matrix and the Zircaloy cladding, there is a possibility that the neutron absorbing material will corrode and leak from the waste container long before the subsequent release of fuel matrix material. An analysis of the release of fuel matrix and neutron absorber material based on a probabilistic model was conducted and the results were used to prepare input to KENO-V, …
