Surface Treatment Of Ferrous Alloys With Boron, Naruemon Suwattananont
Surface Treatment Of Ferrous Alloys With Boron, Naruemon Suwattananont
Theses
Boronizing is a thermo-chemical surface hardening treatment in which boron atoms diffused into the metal substrate form the metallic boride layer, providing high hardness, corrosion resistance, and 3-10 times increasing service life. This type of surface treatment is widely used in many applications.
The purpose of this work was to investigate the structures and properties of boronized ferrous alloys. Three types of steels, AISI 1018 (plain low carbon steel), AISI 4340 (high strength alloy steel), and AISI 304 (austenitic stainless steel), were used for this study. The boronized AISI 1018 and AISI 4340 demonstrated the saw-tooth structure with average 75-76 …

Studies On The Electrochemical Behavior Of Copper Paratolysulfate And Its Complexes, Ji-Guo Song, Pei-Kang Shen
Journal of Electrochemistry
Copper (II) paratolysulfate has been synthesized and characterized by thermo-gravimetric (TG) measurements and differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) analysis. This salt can easily lose all crystal water and the dehydrated salt does not deliquesce in the air. It is found for the first time that the complex of Cu(p-OTs)_(2)/ethanolamine(1∶1) can catalyze the oxidation of 1,1′-bi-2-naphthol in DMSO and DMF, while the process is difficult to perform in H_(2)O and CH_(3)OH. The electrochemical behaviors of both Cu(p-OTs)_(2) and its complexes with ethanolamine have been studied on platinum electrode in DMSO, DMF, (CH_(3)OH) and H_(2)O respectively. The complexes of various copper salts with …

Journal of Electrochemistry
The synthesis of (S)-3-Phenylpropane-2-tert-butoxycarbonylamino- 1-thiol(N-Boc-APT) from L-phenylalanine was reported. L-Phenylalanine was reduced to the corresponding amino alcohol, protection of the amino group using tert-butyl pyrocarbonate gave (S)-2-tert-butoxycarbonylamino-3-phenylpropane-1-ol, which was then O-mesylated and treated with potassium thioacetate in DMF to give 3-phenylpropane-2-tert- butoxycarbonylamino-1-etylmercapto. After the acetyl group was removed with ammonia in alcohol, the desired target molecular was obtained. The structure of intermediate and target molecular was conformed by IR and ~(1)HNMR. We made N-Boc-APT self-assemble-modificated gold electrode and investigated its electrochemical behavior. The CV results of methylene blue on nano-Au/N-Boc-APT SAM/Au electrode showed that nano-Au could speed this electron transfer …

Preliminary Study Of Speek Membranes For Direct Methanol Fuel Cells Application, Su-Zhen Ren
Journal of Electrochemistry
This paper describes the methanol permeability characterization of SPEEK membranes and their feasibility for DMFC application. The SPEEK membranes showed a significant lower methanol permeation than Nafion~115 determined from voltammetric methods. An increase in open circuit voltage was found in the performance of SPEEK membranes in DMFC. The power density of the cell using SPEEK membrane was considerably poorer than that of Nafion~115. If modified properly, the SPEEK membranes can be chosen for DMFC application based on this study.

Nucleation And Crystal Growth Of Pt Electrodeposition On Poly Crystal Au Microdisc Electrode, Zhi-Yong Tao, Pei-Fang Liu
Journal of Electrochemistry
Based on the Fleischmann's model of nucleation and crystal growth for electrodeposition combined with the Barradas-Bosco's adsorption-nucleation model for electrochemical phase formation, the chronoamperometry was well fitted for Pt deposition on polycrystalline Au micro disc electrodes (30 μm in diameter) in different H_(2)PtCl_(6) concentrations at different over-potentials. The initial stage of Pt deposition in dilute H_(2)PtCl_(6) could be interpreted by the model of H_(2)PtCl_(6 ) adsorption combined with instantaneous nucleation and two-dimensional cylindrical growth. The rate constant of the two-dimensional growth increased linearly with overpotential. Then the deposit grew layer by layer and the rate constant increased non-linearly with overpotential. …

Journal of Electrochemistry
TiO_(2)(B) Nanobelts were synthesized by using the "Soft chemical"method. The products were characterized by means of transmission electron microscope(TEM), X-ray diffraction(XRD), Raman spectrum and energy dispersive spectrum(EDS). Galvanostatic charging and discharging tests showed that lithium-ion intercalation/deintercalation occurred reversibly in the TiO_(2)(B) nanobelts electrode, and a high capacity (265 mAh·g~(-1)) can be obtained. The results suggested that TiO_(2)(B) Nanobelts might be a promising negative electrode material of second Lithium battery.

Ice patterns generated by rapid freeze prototyping or a molding process can be used to make ceramic investment molds for metal castings. Due to the use of ice, the ceramic slurries must be poured around the pattern and cured at sub-freezing temperatures. Success of this process depends greatly on the mold strength after the gelation of the slurries. This paper describes the experimental results of the mold strength after the gelation of the slurries under different compositions. The parameters considered include mixing time, alumino-silicate vs. fused silica ratio, volume of binder, and volume of catalyst. The strength of the gelled …

Free Radical (Co)Polymeirzation Of Methyl Methacrylate And Styrene In Room Temperature Ionic Liquids, Hongwei Zhang
Free Radical (Co)Polymeirzation Of Methyl Methacrylate And Styrene In Room Temperature Ionic Liquids, Hongwei Zhang
Doctoral Dissertations
Conventional free radical polymerizations were carried out in a variety of room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs). Generally, methyl methacrylate (MMA) and styrene (St) were used as typical monomers to compare the polymerization behavior both in RTILs and in common volatile organic compound solvents (VOCs). In most cases, it was observed that both yields and molecular weights are enhanced in the RTIL. While we believe the “diffusion-controlled termination” mechanism makes the termination of the radical propagating chains difficult due to the highly viscous nature of RTIL, other researchers have suggested that the rapid polymerization rates are due to the high polarity …

Charge accumulation in insulating or semiconducting samples due to electron beam irradiation is one of the key problems in electron microscopy. One of the most promising techniques for reducing the severity of such charging is to surround the sample with a low pressure atmosphere of a gas. The charging behavior of a number of materials, surrounded by a variety of gases, has been determined to identify the important factors which control charging under these conditions. The magnitude of the surface potential was deduced from an analysis of X-ray spectra from the surface. The relationship between surface charge, gas pressure, and …

Effect Of Microfissures On Corrosion Performance And Mechanical Properties Of Austenitic Stainless Steel Weld Metals, Yan Cui
Doctoral Dissertations
It is generally recognized that hot cracking or microfissuring is one of the main concerns in austenitic stainless steel welding. Microfissures formation can be attributed to the presence of liquid film along the grain boundaries near the bulk solidus temperature under a sufficient strain to rupture the liquid film. Microfissures can be controlled to a certain extent by attention to consumable composition, purity, and welding technique, but they cannot be uniquely eradiated in real weld application. The occurrence of the microfissures can be the cause of weld rejection and may induce property degradation of the weld metal. With the increase …

Network Phases In Abc Triblock Copolymers, Thomas H. Epps Iii, Eric W. Cochran, Cordell M. Hardy, Travis S. Bailey, Ryan S. Waletzko, Frank S. Bates
Eric W. Cochran
Many naturally occurring and engineered products are influenced by network structures. Collagen networks provide a scaffold for living tissue, while swollen arrays of physically cross-linked polypeptides constitute gelatin, the familiar dessert and electrophoresis medium. Although the associated mesh sizes differ by several orders of magnitude, these examples share a common feature: three-dimensional connectivity that imparts mechanical rigidity. Intercalating additional interconnected components can yield broader functions, e.g., ionic or electrical conductivity, optical band gaps, and tailored heat and mass transfer.
Shear-Induced Network-To-Network Transition In A Block Copolymer Melt, Eric W. Cochran, Frank S. Bates
Shear-Induced Network-To-Network Transition In A Block Copolymer Melt, Eric W. Cochran, Frank S. Bates
Eric W. Cochran
The tricontinuous (10, 3)c shear-induced network-to-network transition in a block copolymer melt was analyzed using small-angle x-ray scattering. Investigations show that field-induced network-to-network phase transition was unprecedented in soft condensed matter. It was found that shear transforms were used for self-assembling the soft material into a single crystal (10, 3)d network. The results show the delicate nature of block copolymers phase behavior, where candidate morphologies were spaced closely together on the free energy surface.
