This study investigated the effects of embedding optical fibers into advanced composite materials. This combination was meant to simulate 'smart structures' that have been shown to sense several different variables in the composite including strain, temperature, and damage. A laminate orientation taken from an existing aircraft structure was used to fabricate sixteen groups of specimens which were subjected to compression testing in an IITRI fixture to determine the ultimate compressive strength and modulus of elasticity. Ten of these groups were fabricated with optical fibers while the other six were control groups and contained no optical fibers. This study showed that …

This study investigated the notched and unnotched macromechanical response due to micromechanical behavior of [0/±45/90]S SCS-6/β 21 S and [0/90] 2S Sigma/β 21S subjected to static compressive loads at room temperature. The stress-strain behavior and mechanical response in the presence of a circular hole was examined. A clear description of the progressive nature of damage, which ultimately resulted in failure, was provided. The effect of elevated temperature was shown for SCS-6/β 21S. The ultimate compressive strength and elastic modulus were reported for both MMCs. Sigma/β 21S and SCS-6/β 21S were mildly notch sensitive at room temperature. Notch sensitivity of …

This study investigated systematically the damage initiation damage progression, and failure modes of a ceramic matrix composite, Nicalon/CAS, when loaded in tension at elevated temperatures in the presence of air. A cross-ply lay-up, [0/90]2s, was studied. The primary means of analysis were stress-strain data taken during monotonic and incremental load tests and crack density assessments. Testing was conducted at room temperature 700°C, and 850°C. The stress-strain response was consistent for monotonic and incremental loading, except for a decrease in failure load at the elevated temperatures. This research, the first load-controlled tension-compression fatigue testing to be performed on a MMC, extends the existing knowledge of MMC fatigue damage mechanisms to include the tension compression loading condition. To accomplish this, a (0/90)2, SCS-6/Ti-15-3 laminate was subjected to tension- tension fatigue at room temperature, and tension-compression fatigue at both room temperature and 427°C. Stress and strain data was taken to evaluate the macro-mechanic behavior of the material. Microscopy and fractography were performed to characterize the damage on a micro-mechanic level. This stuidy investigates the fatigue response of a cross-ply [0/90]2s Nicalon/Calcium Aluminosillicate (Nicalcc/CAS) ceramic matrix composite at room temperature under strain controlled tension-tension and tension-compression fatigue loading. The primary objectives were to determine strain fatigue limits for both loading cases and to complete a fatigue life diagram (Δe-N) for all tests. Failure mechanisms were also studied. The average initial modulus value for this lay-up was 120 GPa. The ultimate tensile strain was 0.00988 mn/mm (285 MPa). Eight tests were conducted with maximum strains that ranged from 0.00300 mm/mm to 0.00722 mm/mm. The tension-tension fatigue limit was found to be …

This research has been directed toward capturing large cross sectional rotation during bending of composite arches. A potential energy based nonlinear finite element model that incorporates transverse shear strain was modified to include large bending rotations. Large rotation kinematics were derived in a vector format leading to nonlinear strain that was decomposed into convenient forms for inclusion in the potential energy function. Problem discretization resulted in a finite element model capable of large deformations. Riks method and displacement control solution techniques were used. A study was conducted which investigated the behavior of a Nicalon/ Calcium-Aluminosilicate (Nicalon/CAS) cross-ply [0/90]2S ceramic matrix composite at elevated temperatures under tension-tension fatigue loading. Tension-tension fatigue tests were performed with a load ratio of R = 0.10 and a frequency of 10 Hertz at 700°C and 850°C. These results were compared to results from a previous study conducted at room temperature. Material behavior and damage was recorded by fatigue life curves, elastic modulus' maximum and minimum strain, acetate replication techniques, and post-mortem fractography. This study investigated the effect on heat transfer and friction characteristics for screen regenerative heat exchangers with the screen thickness reduced by rolling. The experiments were performed on 250 and 325 mesh, 304 stainless steel screen using helium gas. Reynolds numbers, based on hydraulic radius, Re, were between 10 and 100. Both the Colburn factor, StPr2/3, and friction factor, f, decreased as the screen thickness was reduced. A correlation was found for predicting friction factor, f. The drag coefficient per screen remained nearly unchanged for thicknesses reduced not more than 30 percent. The decrease in Colburn factor was …

The GaInP2 n+—p junction diode has recently become important to the development of high efficiency GaInP2GaAs dual junction solar cells, which have a demonstrated air mass 1.5 conversion efficiencies in excess of 27. In order to study the effects of long term exposure to the space environment, the GaInP2 n+—p junction diodes were irradiated with a 1 MeV electron beam with a fluence of 1016 electrons/cm2. Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers VCSELs are a type of semiconductor laser with a cavity oriented orthogonally to the planes of material growth. These lasers differ from conventional edge emitting lasers in several important ways. They have symmetric output beams and they are easily built into two dimensional arrays, making them very attractive as photonic components. The characteristic of interest in this thesis is polarization. While the asymmetric cavities of edge emitters exhibit a clear preference for light polarized in a particular direction, the cylindrically symmetric cavity of a VCSEL has no clear preference. In this study, a three-dimensional micromechanics model is developed. The present capabilities of the model include both unidirectional and laminated composite layups with various types of nonlinear analysis such as a thermoelastic-plastic analysis employing the Prandtl-Reuss flow relations, a thermoviscoplastic analysis using Bodner-Partom unified constitutive theory, and an interfacial damage progression scheme based on a statistical interfacial failure criteria. Such nonlinearities are critical factors during thermomechanical fatigue TMF loading of high temperature composites. The fatigue characteristics of a unidirectional titanium based metal matrix composite (MMC) were investigated at elevated temperature (427°C). A hybrid strain controlled loading mode was used to subject the 0° and 90° laminas to fatigue. Along with the fatigue tests, microscopy and analytical modeling ware also conducted. This combination of activities led to defining the initiation and progression of damage and deformation in the MMC. Hen loading was parallel to the fiber on, the fatigue behavior was initially dominated by creep deformation of the matrix. Silicon nitride thin films were deposited on silicon substrates using Diethylsilane (DES) and ammonia by Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition (PECVD) over a temperature range of 100 - 300°C, a pressure range of 0.2 - 0.6 torr, and a ratio of NH3/DES was varied from 6 - 26. The R.F. power and frequency were kept at 0.15 watts/cm2 and 100 KHz respectively. DES flow rate was set at 15 sccm for all experiments in this study. One set of experiments were performed at different values of one parameter while the other parameters were kept constant.

The boundary value problems which are considered are the type that arise due to the presence of a Griffith crack (or cracks) in an anisotropic thermoelastic solid. The thermoelastic field, in such materials, when the infinitesimal theory is employed, is governed by a set of elliptic partial differential equations. The general solution of these equations is expressed in terms of arbitrary analytic functions whose real parts, in turn, are expressed in terms of Fourier type integrals or Fourier series. A new composite damping material is investigated, which consists of a viscoelastic matrix and high elastic modulus fiber inclusions. This fiber enhanced viscoelastic damping polymer is intended to be applied to light-weight flexible structures as surface treatment for passive vibration control. A desirable packing geometry for the composite material is proposed, which is expected to produce maximum shear strain in the viscoelastic damping matrix. The effectiveness of producing a composite coating by suspending micron-sized particles in an electroless nickel bath while plating a 2024T4 aluminum alloy part was studied. The variation in the count of particles trapped in the nickel coating due to changes in the particle size, concentration of the particles in the bath, and the substrate surface texture was also studied. Particle sizes of 1 micron and 10 microns, concentrations of 15 gr/lt and 30 gr/lt, and polished and blasted textures were used. Diffusion of copper in silicon doped gallium arsenide under different diffusion conditions is studied. Copper compensated silicon doped gallium arsenide (GaAs:Si:Cu) is used as switch material for bulk optically controlled semiconductor switch, and on-state photoconductivity of the switch is primarily due to the properties of the copper deep levels introduced in the material during diffusion. The effects of electron radiation on a polyetherimide (PEI), Ultem*, were investigated. In particular, the changes in the glass transition temperature (Tg) with absorbed radiation dose were studied. The polymer was exposed to mono-energetic beams of 100-keV electrons and 1.0-MeV electrons for doses up to 100 megagray (MGy). Dosimetry for the exposures was based on Monte-Carlo simulations of the transfer of energy from an energetic electron to the polymer and on comparison to Nylon standards. This investigation designed and developed a miniature gas chromatograph (GC) using silicon micromachining techniques. The GC is composed of a miniature sample injector (10 µl sample loop); a 0.9 m long, rectangular-shaped (300 µm width and 10 micrometers height) capillary column coated with a 0.2 µm thick copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) stationary phase; and a dual-detector scheme incorporating a CuPc-coated chemiresistor and a 125 µm diameter thermal conductivity detector bead. Micromachining was employed to fabricate the sample injector interface, the GC column, and the dual-detector cavity. The excitation and de-excitation mechanisms of the 1.54 microns emissions, from ion implanted and MBE grown GaAs:Er and AlxGa1-xAs:Er, were studied through luminescence experiments. Experimental techniques included photoluminescence, time resolved photoluminescence, and selective excitation photoluminescence. The Er3+ emissions were studied as a function of Er concentration, aluminum mole friction, n- and p-type doping level, and annealing temperature. In addition oxygen co-doping studies were done in order to determine the role played by oxygen in the Er3+ luminescence.

Boron nitride thin films were deposited on silicon and fused quartz substrates using ammonia and the liquid precursor borane-triethylamine complex (TEAB) by low pressure chemical vapor deposition over a temperature range of 300-850°C, a pressure range of 0.21-0.6 torr, and an ammonia flow rate range of 0-740 sccm. An increased in the nitrogen content in the film due to the addition of ammonia flow resulted in a pronounced improvement in the optical transmission, an increase in the film uniformity and a decrease in the depletion effect. "Two systems were evaluated using the principles of the galvanic stripping process. One of them, the removal of Pb+2 ions from di-2(ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) was performed using metallic zinc. The other, the removal of Fe+3 ions from D2EHPA used metallic iron as reductant and was performed simultaneously with the organic phase using a slightly acidic aqueous solution of hydrochloric acid. In addition, the dissolution of metallic zinc, iron, lead, and cadmium in D2EHPA was studied in order to better understand the anodic step in the mechanism of the galvanic stripping process.

The microwave surface impedance of granular high temperature superconductors is an important figure of merit for technological applications. Because the behavior of the granular materials deviates significantly from that of the ideal defect free superconductors, the loss mechanisms are not fully understood. This dissertation seeks to quantify the contribution of granularity to centimeter wave and millimeter wave losses. By understanding these losses, the superconductive coupling between neighboring grains can also be understood.;The weakly coupled grain model is used as a phenomenological description of the microwave surface impedance.
